Wealthy Beauty in the 60s-Chapter 646 - 648: Bad News
In the evening, Feiyi and Li Manzi kept vigil, as Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong were no longer in life-threatening danger. Feiyang and Li Min had rushed back to the military base with Beibei as they had matters to attend to there as well.
But after hearing from Shitou over the phone, they hurried back, unable to put their minds at ease about Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong’s condition.
Gao Jiaxing returned every day to check in, then rushed back to the base, tired from the constant back and forth.
A week later, Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong were both discharged from the hospital. Xia Xiao and her son and daughter-in-law took turns caring for Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong.
After this incident, Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong’s health had deteriorated even further. Xia Xiao sighed faintly and said to Shitou, "It seems the spring water from the space is not as effective as it used to be."
Shitou replied, "It’s still good for beauty and skincare."
But it could no longer cure all diseases as it once did. Xia Xiao felt a slight regret, but she also knew that having the spring water from space to use for so many years was fortunate.
While Xia Xiao was worried about Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong’s health, terrible news came from S City: Her parents had been involved in a bus accident.
Both Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan were over eighty years old, Xia Weiguo was eighty-four, and Li Wenjuan, eighty-two. They were fairly healthy and often visited nearby parks.
However, after their walk that day, they decided to go elsewhere. As soon as they left the park, they happened to be at a bus stop and boarded a bus, not expecting disaster to strike.
Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan were rushed to the hospital, but attempts to save them were unsuccessful, and they passed away.
Xia Xiao was in utter disbelief. Natural and man-made disasters are so painful, so distressing when they happen to loved ones.
Xia Xiao didn’t wait for Gao Jiaxing; she informed her family and then immediately returned to S City herself.
Although this body was not originally hers, she had lived in it for decades, treating Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan with the same filial piety as if they were her own parents.
Now that Xia Weiguo and Li Wenjuan had met with such an unexpected death, Xia Xiao’s heart was heavy with grief. She had hoped they would pass away peacefully with age, not in such a tragic accident.
At the Xia family’s home, brothers and sisters cried together, while Gao Jiaxing and his children all hurried over.
"Xiaoxiao, stop crying. You’ll hurt your eyes, and Dad and Mom wouldn’t want you to harm yourself like this," Gao Jiaxing consoled Xia Xiao while holding her.
Xia Xiao’s voice was hoarse as she said, "They went out happy and never thought they wouldn’t return home, and then there’s that damned driver..."
At this point, anger was evident in her eyes.
Gao Jiaxing sighed. The bus driver had also died; what else could be done?
After carrying out her parents’ funerals, Xia Xiao’s eyes were severely swollen and bloodshot, her voice completely hoarse and ragged.
Back in the Capital, Xia Xiao fell ill. The various worries and fatigue of the past year had taken their toll on her body and soul. Now, with the death of her parents, Xia Xiao could no longer hold on.
"Rest well, I’ll stay with you," Gao Jiaxing gently stroked Xia Xiao’s face, his eyes filled with profound concern and sorrow.
"Brother Gao, I want to sleep. Will you help me put on a facial mask?" Xia Xiao felt she must look terrible now.
At her words, Gao Jiaxing couldn’t help but laugh. "Xiaoxiao, you’re beautiful, always so beautiful."
Humph, Xia Xiao replied weakly.
Gao Jiaxing brought over a basin of warm water and a towel to wipe Xia Xiao’s face, then applied a facial mask to her. At this point, Xia Xiao had already succumbed to exhaustion and fallen asleep.
While Xia Xiao was sick, Shitou became the representative at the research laboratory. Dr. Xi was initially quite uncomfortable with it, feeling that Shitou, just a kid not focusing on his studies in the Genius Youth Class, shouldn’t be meddling in the lab.
Xia Xiao wasn’t there, but there was him and other researchers—who needs Shitou to be pointing fingers?
But Shitou’s mind was too sharp, and sometimes even Dr. Xi realized his own oversights only after Shitou pointed them out. In the end, he said nothing more.
Xia Xiao had been ill for over half a month. Gao Jiaxing had been taking time off every now and then to stay with Xia Xiao, tiring himself out, looking after both his parents and her.
Xia Xiao had actually recovered, only feeling a little weak, and indeed, she had been extremely tired recently. She had never properly rested. Now that she was sick and had Gao Jiaxing’s care, Xia Xiao had actually gained some weight.
Seeing the thinner Gao Jiaxing, Xia Xiao felt very heartbroken. He was busy with his duties in the military, looking after his parents, taking care of her, and managing the household—it was all very tiring.
"Brother Gao, why don’t you go to the next room and get some sleep?" suggested Xia Xiao.
"I can just sleep here," Gao Jiaxing replied as he lay down.
"But I’ve been sick. It wouldn’t be good if I infected you," Xia Xiao truly worried.
"It’s fine, I’m healthy," Gao Jiaxing immediately lied down beside her.
Xia Xiao didn’t make a fuss anymore. She cozied up in Gao Jiaxing’s arms, reflecting on the events of the past few years, and couldn’t help but sigh.
"What are you thinking about?" Gao Jiaxing asked.
Xia Xiao shook her head, "Nothing much, let’s get some sleep."
The couple quickly fell asleep. When Xia Xiao awoke, Gao Jiaxing had already returned to the military base. He had gotten up without waking her, which Xia Xiao was accustomed to by now.
First, she went to check on Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong. The family had hired two aides to look after Gao Guoqiang and Zheng Xianghong. After eating, Xia Xiao asked the driver to take her to school.
Stepping back into school, Xia Xiao felt as though she hadn’t been there in ages, though it had only been a month or two.
"Grandma Xia," Xiao Shanyue exclaimed with joy upon seeing Xia Xiao, grabbing her hand and saying, "Grandma Xia, have you recovered from your illness? Brother Shitou said you were sick."
"I’m better now. What are you doing here?" asked Xia Xiao.
"I’m waiting for Brother Shitou," Shanyue replied, unable to enter the lab and thus waiting outside.
"Oh, then wait here for a moment, I’ll go in and find him." Xia Xiao didn’t bring Shanyue inside, asking her to wait outside while she went in.
With Xia Xiao back, the researchers greeted her and praised her for having such a bright grandson.
Everyone envied Xia Xiao. Not to mention anything else, having Shitou as a clever and lively grandson was enough to make people envious.
"Shanyue is waiting for you outside," Xia Xiao patted Shitou’s head.
Shitou, working at the computer, looked up at Xia Xiao when he heard her, "Grandma, you’re better now, why didn’t you rest more? Does Grandpa know you’ve gone out?"
Shitou’s barrage of questions left Xia Xiao speechless, "Don’t worry about that."
"How can I not worry? Now that you’re here, I’ll go out. I’ve been cooped up here so long, I’m about to mold," Shitou complained, immediately shutting down the computer, stood up, and picked up his backpack to head outside.
Xia Xiao smiled.
Outside, Shan Yue saw Shitou come out and said, "Brother Shitou, you’ve finally come out. I’ve been waiting for you for so long."
"What are you waiting for me for?" Shitou felt Shanyue was too clingy.
