Chapter 695: Chapter 698 What are you really upset about?

Jing Chengyuan was three years younger than Yangyang and Liangliang, and Xinxin, and was now twelve years old, attending the fifth grade in elementary school. This time, it was for a promotion exam.

Wen Shufei was almost out of her mind with anger, hoping her daughter would excel, preferably exceeding Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin, but at the very least, she shouldn’t lag too far behind.

Yet now her daughter was far behind Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin, and her overall performance was barely satisfactory. Otherwise, with failing grades in math, she would have to repeat the year. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"Are you brain-dead, so stupid, how could I have given birth to such a dim-witted daughter?" Wen Shufei pulled her daughter away from Mrs. Jing’s side and smacked her on the buttocks a few times.

Wen Shufei had friends in the school of Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin, so as soon as she got her daughter’s scores, the infuriated Wen Shufei took the initiative to call and find out the scores of Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin. Comparing them, Wen Shufei felt disappointed that her daughter hadn’t shown the mettle.

"You enroll her in so many extracurricular classes, and force her to study this and that every day, how can she have the mood to study? You need to consider whether she can keep up or not," Mrs. Jing spoke up.

"I had the same upbringing, Mom, don’t spoil her. It’s because you always pamper her that she becomes lazy. She’s my daughter, wouldn’t I want what’s best for her? Though it’s tough now, it will benefit her for life. There’s no easy way in studying," Wen Shufei said darkly, feeling like reprimanding even her mother-in-law.

Wen Shufei most hated it when her mother-in-law interrupted when she was disciplining her daughter, absolutely annoying.

"I pamper her, but do you see what you’ve pushed our daughter to become? Yuanyuan is so skinny it’s heartbreaking, don’t you see?" Mrs. Jing retorted.

When Mrs. Jing finished, Wen Shufei replied, "I make sure the maid nourishes her every day, and she gets a physical examination every month. Do you think I don’t know if she’s healthy or not? It’s normal for children to slim down as they grow. Mom, you’re old, just take care of yourself, and leave Yuanyuan’s matters to me."

At the Jing family’s home, Jing Chengyuan was crying her heart out, and Mrs. Jing ended up arguing with Wen Shufei.

At that time, Father Jing and Jing Yao weren’t home, and Mrs. Jing, upset, went back to her room and phoned Jing Hao.

Jing Hao also felt a headache, and after talking to Mrs. Jing, he called Wen Shufei to know about his daughter’s status.

Wen Shufei also ended up complaining to Jing Hao, blaming him for only focusing on his work and neglecting their daughter, and not having the right to criticize her. This led to an argument over the phone, and Wen Shufei hung up on him.

Jing Hao was furious and could only wait to finish up his work to rush back.

Perhaps Wen Shufei had been too harsh in her reproof. That night, Jing Chengyuan developed a high fever, unknown to Wen Shufei since her daughter was no longer sharing a room with her and it was Mrs. Jing who, concerned for her granddaughter, discovered her condition.

Wen Shufei was frightened. In the middle of the night, after taking her temperature, and finding it at 39.5 degrees Celsius, she immediately had their driver take them to the hospital.

Mrs. Jing, anxious at home, paced around; her husband and sons were not around, and she regretted not insisting on going to the hospital.

Around three in the morning, with no signs of Wen Shufei and Jing Chengyuan returning, nor answering her calls, Mrs. Jing finally called Jing Hao to inform him.

Jing Hao, setting aside his work, hurried back, but by the time he arrived, it was already dawn.

In the hospital, Jing Chengyuan received injections and medication, her temperature did not rise further, but it hadn’t fallen either.

Wen Shufei, watching her daughter’s persistent high fever, was in tears, staying up all night, afraid to even close her eyes.

Only at daylight did Jing Chengyuan’s temperature drop to 38.5 degrees Celsius. Wen Shufei finally breathed a sigh of relief, though the fever hadn’t completely subsided, it had at least reduced somewhat.

Jing Hao arrived at the hospital and Wen Shufei didn’t want to say anything. Jing Chengyuan had already woken up and when she saw Jing Hao, she called out, "Daddy."

Jing Hao looked at his daughter’s pale face and immediately felt a pang of heartache. "It’s okay, Daddy is here for you."

At these words, Jing Chengyuan’s face lit up with a joyful smile. Compared to Wen Shufei, Jing Hao didn’t spend much time with his daughter.

So Jing Chengyuan was very happy to hear that her dad was going to stay with her.

Seeing this, Wen Shufei felt a sourness in her heart. Despite spending the most time with their daughter, the daughter longed for her father the most—even fearing her mother.

Wen Shufei thought she was acting in her daughter’s best interest yet couldn’t help covering her chest, feeling somewhat hurt.

But, considering that her daughter was still young and naive, she would understand when she grew older that her mother’s strictness was for her own good, so Wen Shufei steeled her heart.

"Once you’re better, I’ll personally oversee your studies."

As soon as Wen Shufei finished speaking, Jing Hao frowned. "Why talk about this now?"

Wen Shufei glared back. "Her grades are so poor, if she doesn’t get proper tutoring, even if she lucks out in getting into sixth grade, she won’t be able to get into junior high."

Jing Hao said, "Then you should wait until Yuanyuan is better to talk about this. Why bring it up now? Besides, do you think you can actually teach Yuanyuan?"

Jing Hao’s skepticism made Wen Shufei’s face tense. "Why couldn’t I? I was always at the top of my class, and I don’t know how I ended up with such a dull daughter."

As she spoke, Wen Shufei shot Jing Hao a look, clearly blaming him.

Jing Hao just smirked and didn’t bother responding. Wen Shufei continued, "But I might be too busy to take good care of Yuanyuan at times."

At this point, Wen Shufei suggested hiring a tutor for their daughter.

It was perfectly normal for families like theirs to hire a tutor for their daughter. However, Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin were all tutoring at the Gao family’s home and didn’t have a private tutor; thus, Wen Shufei hadn’t hired one either.

Now that her daughter’s grades had dropped so low, Wen Shufei couldn’t care less about keeping up appearances.

Jing Hao said, "Why go to such lengths? Just let Yuanyuan spend more time playing with her older siblings. With their guidance in studies, her grades will naturally improve."

Jing Hao was also dissatisfied with Wen Shufei’s fear that their daughter might lose ambition by mingling with her cousins.

But knowing how often the nieces and nephews ran about here and there, he didn’t insist.

Upon hearing Wen Shufei’s plan to hire a tutor, Jing Hao brought up Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin, feeling they were the most suitable candidates.

Wen Shufei paused, at a loss for words.

Jing Hao added, "Yangyang, Liangliang, and Xinxin are great kids, performing excellently in both academics and other areas. Since they are siblings themselves, they should play together naturally. What exactly are you worried about?"
