What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?-Chapter 88: The Deep Chasm
"Ugghh... How long more, Gor Gor?"
"I’m not sure to be honest... The rift is way bigger than we thought."
"Eyyyy... But you go for so long liao..."
I adjusted my phone as I paced back and forth in front of the portal, "It’s only been a few days... How’s dad and mum?"
"Same same lah... Not like this is your first time going away for so long... Dad’s still at work. Mom’s at the supermarket."
"Then why are you complaining?"
"Because I’m bored lah, what else? I don’t even have anything else to do now."
I then heard a soft creak coming from her side of the call, a creak that I knew came from one specific thing in our home.
"Lin Hui Zhen! You better not be messing around on my bed!!"
"Ehhh... But your bed so comfy Gor Gor... Let me use it since you not here anyway~"
"You always mess it up and there’s always a weird smell after I come back to sleep in it."
"Oi! You trying to say I smell weird is it?"
"Or else why would it smell weird? Do you invite your friends over to have a party in my room or something? Then you have fun on my bed?"
"... No?"
Tsk... That pause there was all I needed to know...
I sighed, "Whatever... Wash my sheets before I come back, got it?"
"Blehhhh~"
She blew a raspberry at me before she hung up the call.
I turned back to look at the others that were waiting for me at the portal, all of them trying their best to look busy by inspecting their equipment so that I didn’t feel rushed to end my call with my family.
I went over to them and cleared my throat, "Ahem... Thanks for waiting. Sorry about that. Just needed to check if everything’s alright back at home."
Sergei shook his head, "Nichego strashnogo. It’s no problem, Mortal God. It is normal for one to worry about family."
The others also nodded at me before they picked up their things to gather around me.
Maylene was also there though she won’t be joining us on this trip. She would be staying behind with the rest of the bunny girls to start clearing out the space needed to build our new base of operations on the island.
They had also floated the idea where instead of just getting the materials from the mainland, we could mine for minerals in their home world to be refined for their use.
While it was possible, we still needed to make sure that we do not leave it open for too long as a rift breakout was still possible.
In the past, there were countries who had thought that these rifts could be kept open indefinitely as long as they cleared out the Anomalies around the original portal and kept an eye on the Gatekeeper.
After all, even if the rift was stabilised and the portal allowed Anomalies to pass through, it wouldn’t matter if the entrance was guarded and they could not get through, right?
While that actually worked for a while, it seems like if the Gatekeeper was allowed to continue to exist after the portal has stabilised into a Rift Breakout, it will evolve into a Rift Maelstrom where it will spawn even more Gatekeepers in other parts of the rift which would in turn spawn more portals in our World.
Those new portals would also instantly trigger a Rift Breakout and allow Anomalies in other parts of the rift to cross over to our world.
The only good thing was that the new portals would also appear near the old portal that is located in our World and those countries were lucky enough to have had the foresight to barricade that side as well, otherwise there would be a lot more casualties when a horde of Anomalies crossed over.
Half a city still got destroyed because of that, though...
Everyone then reached the consensus that a portal should be closed as soon as possible unless there are rare materials that can be exploited and even then, the portal should be immediately closed the moment the rift has been stabilised.
That’s why... We could totally do what they suggested and establish a mining base in the rift until either we refined enough materials, or until the Gatekeeper triggers a Rift Breakout.
For now though... We would first have to deal with the Anomalies there and capture the Gatekeeper.
Even if we decide not to do what the Bunarfs suggested, there is still an entire motherlode of Mana Crystals that we can mine down in the chasm.
That’s why our original purpose here hasn’t changed. We would need to recon the area where the Gatekeeper is located and an assault force would be assembled to deal with this.
"Be careful, everyone!! Come back safe!!" She waved.
I don’t know why but I suddenly felt like she was a stay at home wife seeing off her family for the day.
I nodded at her before I led the way into the portal, already prepared to fight in case there was another Anomaly there.
Sure enough, the moment I walked through the portal an Anomaly jumped towards me to attack me.
It was just one of the normal human sized Anomalies that we first encountered so it wasn’t a big deal for me. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
In fact after having that dual cultivation session with Ava and Olivia that night... I’ve gotten even stronger than before.
I swung my fist and punched at the Anomaly, the impact enough to shatter the rock armour and the flesh underneath it before it was sent flying to crash into the wall.
Surprisingly, that was the only Anomaly around and the cavern was completely empty aside from that one Anomaly.
My Guardians quickly joined me and crossed through the portal, all of them also vigilant and looking around to see if there were any Anomalies that were waiting to pounce on us.
Seeing that the coast was clear, we decided to head towards the former Bunarf colony in order to reach the deeper part of the chasm.
After walking there so many times, the route was already ingrained into my memory and I could just walk there with my eyes closed.
When we reached the chasm, the whole place felt especially eerie considering the fact that this place had been completely occupied with bunny girls just a day ago and now there was not even a soul left here.
We moved to the bottom of the chasm, passing through former dwellings and spaces where the bunny girls used to reside but were now completely empty and silent.
We reached the bottom and it seems like the improvised barricade that they had placed over the hole was still intact which meant that no Anomaly came through here.
Olivia quickly moved the barricade away before we proceeded deeper into the tunnel, passing through the empty cavern that still had some outcroppings of Mana Crystals before we reached the ledge that was right above the bottom of the chasm.
At the other side of the chasm across from us, I could see the tunnel opening that was glowing blue in colour where we believed the Gatekeeper would be hiding inside.
Below us, however, was a writhing shadowy mass which was the main force of Anomalies that was guarding the Gatekeeper.
I turned back to look at Leena who wordlessly passed me a yellow coloured tube.
I pulled at the top to extend it before I unscrewed the red cap at the top, exposing the pull tab that had a string connected to it.
Gripping onto the string tightly, I yanked at the pull tab to dislodge it from the top of the stick and held it away from me, prompting a white smoke to emerge before it was closely followed by red sparks.
I then dropped the flare into the darkness below, illuminating the chasm below us.
I couldn’t help but suck in a breath when I saw the crowd of Anomalies waiting below us.
No... Calling it a crowd was an understatement... It was an entire sea of them...
Every single surface on the ground was covered with Anomalies of various shapes and sizes.
There were the smaller ones, the human sized ones, the orc sized ones and even the huge ones that towered over every other Anomaly near them.
This was an entire army...
But what caught my attention, however, was that all of them seemed to be looking in a specific direction at one part of the chasm.
I followed their gaze and there was a single figure that stood on top of a rock outcropping to stand higher than all the other Anomalies.
It had a human shaped body and unlike the rest of its brethren that were covered with rock armour, this one had small rock formations hovering around it instead.
In its hands was also a staff that was made out of stone that was as long as it was tall.
And this Anomaly was staring right up at us...
It lifted a single finger and pointed towards us, prompting all the Anomalies below to turn to us at the same time.
The sound of a camera snapping photos could be heard behind me as Olivia quickly snapped up pictures of the enemies we would be dealing with to request for reinforcements.
Just in time too, as the sea of Anomalies started to move in our direction.
Ok guys... I think it’s time to run.
