Chapter 784: This Is The Civilian Sector

I don’t know how to say this but... I was quite disappointed...

Not at the machine specifically but what they put me through.

Sure the machine was really cool in a way, I could actually feel the weight of every movement and even the change in gravity as well as the pressure of doing certain movements... But that’s just the machine’s specialty.

I had been expecting them to put me through various different scenarios like maybe making me race through an obstacle course, making me shoot different sized targets at different ranges, making me escort a target or something, you know?

But all they did was to make me go through combat scenarios one after the other with different Exo-Knights.

Sure, they might spice things up a bit where in one scenario I had to fight two at once but that was it. They never increased the number of enemies beyond two.

It actually felt like a waste and I completed it while feeling completely inadequate.

The simulation ended and I stepped away from the simulator chair to return to the viewing platform.

The first thing I noticed was that Theresa was gathered with the drones in the corner and seemed to be typing furiously away at her personal terminal and all the drones were focused on her.

I went over to my girls who were gathered in another corner and whispered, "Did I do something outrageous again?"

Amber shrugged, "I think it’s normal though. Maybe their test pilots nowadays are just inferior."

Yumiko seemed to agree as well, "I’m not sure what their test standards are but it certainly feels like it’s quite low if this is meant to test for their best."

Ries also chimed in, "The machine is cool though... They’re making use of the magnetic propulsor technology to its fullest extent here. The entire building seemed to basically be an especially large machine by itself with its internal circuitry acting as everything inside... It’s like this entire building is the simulator itself."

I’m just going to pretend I understood what Ries just said and nod along.

Lea also had something else to say as she stared at the chair where I had been sitting earlier, "The scenarios that they gave are also... Should I say... Lacking?"

Everyone nodded in agreement.

Mara tapped on the side of her cheek thoughtfully, "This was even easier than the lessons that the Instructor gave us as well. I wonder if this really is a case of their standards dropping though?"

"Didn’t you get your Exo-Knight license at one of the academies for nobles before?" I asked.

She nodded, "Yes, but you have to know, Captain, that the standards between the noble academies and corporations like this are very different. Remember that the Nobles normally pilot Exo-Knights for exhibition matches and to show off. In other words, our standards are more for how to pilot the Exo-Knight while looking good instead of concentrating on what is actually practical."

Huh... I guess I can see the problem.

Theresa finally finished with whatever she was doing and she was clearly quite happy with what she saw.

"Thank you for your showcase, miss Tera! Umm... Could I ask who else might want to be hired as a test pilot for us?"

Hmm... Why does it sound like they aren’t even planning to hire me anymore? Or more specifically, like they’ve given up on the idea of hiring?

Yumiko stepped forward, "I’ll do it."

Theresa ushered her towards the ramp and I joined my girls on top of the viewing platform to watch Yumiko strep herself into the chair.

Once again, the entire space started to transform and watching it from up here gave me a different spectacle than watching it from down below.

I got to see how the entire space broke apart before assembling together again and at this distance, the white cubes kind of looked like those sci-fi nanobots flowing around like some kind of liquid to transform themselves.

It was really cool to see them form together to merge into the Exo-Knight unit that Yumiko had picked and it seems like she had chosen an Exo-Knight that was specialised in melee combat.

Interestingly, the Exo-Knight the cubes formed was actually smaller than the normal Exo-Knight where aside from the cockpit being the normal size, the head, arms and legs were all shrunk down so the Exo-Knight looked like a chibi form instead.

I guess since this was a simulator, they could just simulate the effects and do away with the redundant parts.

The fact that I couldn’t tell the difference while I was piloting it earlier was clear proof that it worked.

I then watched as more of those white cubes formed into an enemy Exo-Knight in front of Yumiko and she engaged it in melee combat.

While the enemy Exo-Knight was fully formed, it was smaller in size as well, similar to the one that Yumiko was currently piloting.

Seeing that I definitely saw normal sized Exo-Knights during the simulation, the screens in the cockpit must have also been manipulated to show false images as part of the simulation.

Yumiko immediately flew her Exo-Knight forward and two swords formed in her Exo-Knight’s hands.

She dashed towards the enemy who was equipped with a beam rifle that started shooting at Yumiko.

Yumiko started weaving her Exo-Knight through the barrage of beams and quickly reached the enemy Exo-Knight, slashing her sword through the enemy and cutting it in half.

She defeated the enemy way faster than I did and it was quite obvious Yumiko’s a better pilot than I am.

In fact, I could tell that Theresa was impressed by what she saw with how her jaw dropped.

The next few enemies that appeared were also quickly dispatched by Yumiko, my dog girl lover making it look completely effortless.

Even when they bumped the numbers up to two enemies, it barely affected the time she needed to cut down all her opponents before she was the only one left standing.

This was where I realised something which I felt stupid for not realising sooner.

Yumiko was literally trained by the military and also a part of the special forces that is supposed to be the best of the best. So she’s not only just a cut above the average pilot, she’s more like in a different dimension as compared to them.

So to Theresa and her superiors, Yumiko might be the best pilot they have ever seen.

Yumiko completed all the scenarios in half the time I took and the machine deactivated to allow her to step away from the chair and return back to us.

She then stopped in front of me, her tail wagging behind her and looking like she was expecting something.

I realised what she wanted a second later and I reached up to pat her head, my Inucani lover whining cutely and rubbing herself against me.

So cute~

Theresa took another moment to turn towards the drones again and started tapping away on her personal terminal again.

"Was it too easy for you?" I whispered to Yumiko.

She took a moment to rub her face against mine before answering, "Mnnn... It certainly does feel like a let down, Mistress... But did I do good?"

"You did good, Yumiko. Good girl~"

She gave me a lick on my cheek before she went back to enjoying my head pats.

The next person to take their ’interview’ test was Amber and it went just about how one might expect it to go.

Her results were on par with mine and she returned with a stride that suggested she didn’t even try that hard in her piloting.

Of course she wanted some attention from me as well so I gave her the head pats she wanted which then turned to a make out session as she pushed me against the railing, taking advantage of the fact that Theresa would take another minute to convene with her superiors once more.

The rest of the girls also took part in their ’interview’ though the only person to refrain was Renata, my eldritch maid claiming that the activity did not interest her.

And not to diminish the skills of the others, but I guess after they saw how Yumiko had piloted the simulator, they were less surprised by Lea’s, Mara’s and Ries’s performance with the simulator.

In fact, I would even say that Theresa looked a little relieved at their results and took less time deliberating with her superiors as compared to how much time she spent after Amber, Yumiko and I took our turns.

Finally, the machine shut down and Theresa approached me with a resolute expression on her face.

"Miss Tera? Crusaders Inc. would like to formally contract you and your Mercenary company to be official test pilots for us. I will send you the contract through your personal terminal and if everything is agreeable, please sign the contract and send it back to me. I hope we can work together again."

Time to see what benefits they are offering then~
