What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?-Chapter 797: Test Pilot’s First Day
We were given time to return to our room to drop off our clothes which gave me the opportunity to let Renata engulf me and eat up the pilot suit before taking its place.
The best part about this was that she even made the soles a little thicker so it felt like I was actually wearing shoes instead of walking around barefoot.
I’m really glad to have Renata as my eldritch maid.
We then went back to the training room where Theresa led us to join up with another group of people that were wearing the same type of pilot’s suit like ours, each of them wearing their own colours.
Theresa’s boyfriend, Anthony, was also there, the guy’s face brightening up when he saw her.
All of them were standing in front of a single bald guy with a cybernetic right eye who looked like he was in the middle of briefing them when we approached.
Theresa waved at him, "Hello Gary! I’ve got a couple of newcomers for you!"
The bald guy raised an eyebrow at us and I noticed that his cybernetic eye seemed to glow for a moment before he nodded.
"I have heard, yes. These must be the supposed hot shots that impressed you corporate people?"
Theresa crossed her arms, "I’ll tell you that they are the real deal this time! Their results surpassed pretty much all our company records several times during our test."
"Sure... Using the simulator, right? All the records set using the simulator are by newbies who wouldn’t have piloted an Exo-Knight for longer than a day in their lives. This is why I said you should get someone with experience like a pilot or something on your recruiting team instead."
"Well, I suppose you should prepare yourself to be surprised today then! Because they are going to shatter all your expectations!"
The bald guy frowned, "You do know we are testing the new generation Exo-Knights today, right? Are you really sure you want these newbies to jump right in?"
Theresa gestured towards me in particular, "Don’t worry! Miss Tera here already has experience with piloting the new generation Exo-Knight!!"
"What?! That’s not possible! We have not even rolled out any new generation Exo-Knights for the open market yet! Those should only be delivered next month at the earliest!"
"Ah, but we did have three specific ones that were used to showcase the new generation Exo-Knights in Talavee Station, right?"
"You’re not saying... She tried to steal one of them?!"
Suddenly, everyone was looking at me with very unfriendly eyes like they were prepared to fight me.
My girls quickly stepped up beside me, facing their gazes head on without fear.
Theresa quickly jumped in front of me, "No! No! Did you all not get the memo yet?"
The bald guy narrowed his eyes, "What memo?"
"There was an attempt to steal the next gen Exo-Knights, that is true. They made use of the other Exo-Knights in the event to try and break through and steal the Exo-Knights we had brought to the exhibition... But Miss Tera here managed to commandeer one of our Exo-Knights to fight back and protect it and the other two from being stolen!"
Everyone seemed to be surprised by that, meaning the news about that event had not reached this place yet I guess.
Or... Perhaps the company was intentionally suppressing that piece of news since I doubt they would want people to know that they almost lost their new generation of Exo-Knights and would have actually lost them had an outsider not intervened.
The bald guy turned to me, "Is that true? You piloted one of our tenth generation Exo-Knights to beat back a hostile Exo-Knight?"
"Several of them," Theresa corrected proudly, as though she was the one that was piloting it that day.
I nodded, "Pretty much..."
"And just to make sure that it wasn’t a fluke..." Theresa continued, looking even prouder by the second. "The simulator we used to test them had been configured to simulate the new Exo-Knights and all of them managed to pilot them perfectly!"
Oh what? That was definitely news to me... I didn’t even realise that...
The bald guy sighed, "Fine then... I suppose we might as well just see what they can do."
Theresa, "Perfect! I shall leave them in your capable hands!"
She then turned to us and shot us a wink, "I have to go back to my duties now! Don’t worry about him, he’s actually a pretty nice guy!"
The green dragon lady then ran off, leaving us with this group of pilots.
The bald guy gestured towards us, "As you might have heard... Name’s Gary. I’m the team lead for the test pilots on this station. In other words, while you are working here, I’m the one in charge of you so don’t give me any shit and we will get along just fine. Now go and join the rest. I was just about to brief our duties for today."
I led my girls over to join the pilots in front of him, a few of them giving me a nod of greeting and some even shooting me a smile, their attitudes completely doing a one eighty now that they knew I didn’t actually try to steal the Exo-Knight.
That basically told me that these people are really loyal to the company and would probably die for them.
Not sure if that’s a good thing or not here... Since they could be loyal to the company because they treat them really well which I believe is the case here, considering how good the facilities are.
Gary waited until we were all assembled before he waved his hand to prompt a holographic screen to appear behind him.
"Alright everyone! As I was saying, we’re supposed to be testing some of the new Exo-Knights today and the lab coats want some test results on their performance. We’re going to have some of you fly your knights out there and give them the info they need. Got it?"
There was a chorus of affirmatives amongst the pilots before Gary turned his attention towards us.
"Alright... Since Theresa vouched for you... I suppose I can just blame her if anything goes wrong. All of you will also grab one of the Exo-Knights and follow the instructions the lab coats give us."
Ries raised her hand slightly, "Erm... A small question? What would we be doing exactly? The only thing they told us is that we would be test pilots but... How would we be testing them? Like... What do we need to do?"
"Ah... I see... Complete newbies I assume? This is the first time you girls are even acting as test pilots? You’ve just been piloting Exo-Knights for your own purposes all this while?"
The girls and I shared a look before I turned back to make a face at him, "Well... I guess you should know this considering you’re the team lead and all but... All of us quite literally only just received our pilot licenses about a week or two ago... The only experience with Exo-Knights are the ones we piloted during our time at the school..."
Now everyone was looking at me with a look of disbelief.
Gary pointed a finger at me, "You’ve... Barely had any experience piloting Exo-Knights?"
I nodded, "We only just started piloting Exo-Knights recently... We don’t even have a personal Exo-Knight of our own yet."
The other pilots muttered amongst themselves, probably wondering how we even got the job being so unqualified for it.
Unexpectedly, Anthony raised his hand to get everyone’s attention.
"Ahem... I think we shouldn’t judge them too quickly, everyone. At least let them show their skills first, right? After all, they were personally scouted by corporate to be here."
I narrowed my eyes slightly at him, unsure if he was actually being genuine or was he being sarcastic.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t really tell as it could be either one as he flashed me a neutral smile.
Whatever, that was what we intended to do anyway.
Gary scratched the back of his head, "Tch... Fine, whatever... Just know that there should be a clause in your employment contract that if you were to meet an accident and lose your life... The company isn’t responsible for it if the accident is determined to be your own fault. And if you break company property, you’re also liable to pay for it if it stemmed from your own mistakes."
I nodded at him, "Don’t worry, we are aware of that. We did properly read through the contract before signing them."
He nodded, "Fine then... In that case let’s just get on with it... We’ll be heading to the hangar bay and you’ll get your instructions once you’ve launched in your Exo-Knights. Let’s move."
The test pilots dispersed, breaking into their own groups to start walking towards the door.
Gary came up to us and grimaced, "I hope... For your sakes... You girls actually have skill. Otherwise... The other pilots might not take your presence kindly."
He then left us without looking back.
Huh... You’d think that we had signed up to be in the military or something...
