When I Left, He Found His Way Back-Chapter 46: Your boyfriend is awake
Chapter 46: Your boyfriend is awake
Jessica’s POV
I wore a long dress to hide my bandage, still, I couldn’t hide it from Liam. He saw the way I was walking, pulled me to a stop and lifted my dress.
"What happened to your leg?"
"It’s nothing," I said, pulling the dress down, but he wouldn’t buy that.
He suddenly swept me off my feet, making me yelp in surprise. We were on the streets. I felt embarrassed and quickly asked him to put me down but he refused.
"We’re going to the hospital," he said.
"No, it’s already been treated. Put me down," but he didn’t listen.
"Stop resisting. There’s no harm in letting a doctor check your wound. The hospital is on the way. You could use the opportunity to check on that guy."
I blinked. He was right. I could check on Tristen. But why was he suggesting it? Didn’t he hate Tristen?
Our drive to the hospital, I was on my phone, reading the chats in the group I created. It was fun as everyone was introducing themselves and familiarizing with each other.
I didn’t want what happened between me and Liam earlier to happen again. Kissing him was a spur of the moment, and I have to learn self-control, to not let my emotions get the better of me.
I could feel his gaze on me, but I paid him no heed. Suddenly, an unknown number messaged me. Opening the message, it was Sandra.
Sandra: Jessica, please, can we talk?
I was a lot calmer now, so I replied matter-of-factly.
Me: Look, I’m sorry about how I reacted, I shouldn’t have made it seem like it was the worst thing on earth. I was caught off guard and just wanted to give you guys your privacy.
Sandra: Does that mean you’re not going to report us?
Me: Report you? Hell no! Why would I do that? Come on babes, it’s not a big deal. I know the school rules forbids it, but hey, you’re adults. Love can’t be killed.
I was partially sincere but was mostly doing this because I wanted her to put her mind at ease. I didn’t want her labeling me as her enemy. My life was already messy enough. I didn’t want more trouble for myself.
Sandra: Thank you! Thank you so much, Jessica. I love you! We’ll meet in school tomorrow, coffee on me.
I smiled, she’s so sweet.
"We’re here."
Liam’s voice intruded my thoughts and I got out of the car without saying a word to him. He followed after, but just as I walked around the car, I spotted Hilda hurrying out of the hospital. I was about to call out her name when Liam placed a hand over my mouth.
I looked at him, my brows creased. It was only after Hilda got into a waiting sleek, black car and drove off that he let me go.
"What are you doing?" I asked, annoyed at what he just did.
"I just didn’t want you to call out her name. You can talk to her over the phone."
I frowned, what kind of lame excuse was that? I lifted my phone and called Hilda. Her phone rang but she didn’t pick up. I called again, thrice before she answered.
She sounded exhausted.
Hilda: Hey, Jess?
Me: What’s up? I saw you –
Liam pinched my arm to get my attention and lightly shook his head, signaling me not to say that. I didn’t understand what was wrong with Liam, but I changed my wording.
Me: I saw you haven’t gotten home from school yet, did you go somewhere?
Hilda: I’ve gone to work. There are many customers and I’m quite exhausted. I’ll talk to you when I’m done.
My brows creased. Hilda lied to me? Why? I just saw her leaving the hospital and entering a luxurious car... Hold on, how did Hilda get...
My eyes widened, was she dating a rich guy? Why didn’t she tell me? Why was she hiding it from me?
"Seems your friend didn’t tell you the truth?"
I glanced at him and rolled my eyes. "It’s none of your business." I walked forward, but he pulled me back.
"Don’t be so trusting, Jessica, be a little thorough, even with those you trust the most."
"So they don’t betray me like you did? Not everyone’s like you, Liam." I sneered and yanked my arm from him.
He clasped his mouth and followed me into the hospital. We met a doctor, who checked on my leg. Good thing I came by to be checked, otherwise, the leg might have gotten worse.
Seemed the running from earlier caused the bandage to irritate the injury, because the skin on the surface started to peel off.
After treating the injury, the doctor bandaged it again and warned me to be careful. I thanked the doctor before leaving to see Tristan. Liam didn’t come with me. He waited at the reception while I took the elevator to the last floor.
The passageway was empty. I arrived at the door to Tristan’s ward, my hand raised to knock but before I could, the door was pulled apart, startling me into taking a step back.
"Ma’am? You’re here?" Tristan’s assistant asked calmly.
"Hm, I wanted to see how he’s doing."
He stepped aside and opened the door wider for me to go in. Entering the ward, Tristan was lying there, the machines beeping, but he was still in a coma.
I turned to his assistant, "Hasn’t he woken up yet?"
He shook his head, "The doctor said he might wake up soon."
"That’s a relief," I said, taking a deep breath. I closed the distance between me and the bed and touched his face with the back of my hand.
He was warm, just like a normal temperature. That’s a good sign, I thought.
Just then, my phone rang. Glancing at the screen, it was Liam calling. I hissed through my teeth, what does he want? I’ve not even spent five minutes here. Annoyed, I answered the call.
Me: What now? I just left your side.
Liam: We have a date, I didn’t want you to forget.
My nose scrunched up.
Me: What date? I’m accompanying you for dinner. I don’t see that as a date, Liam.
Liam: Are you sure about that? What if I kiss you?
My eyes widened, and I blurted out without thinking of where I was.
Me: I dare you to kiss me again.
From the corner of my eyes, I thought I saw Tristan move but when I turned my head, he was still, but for some reason, I felt his head had turned. He was facing the opposite direction when I entered, but now, he was facing me, but his eyes were closed.
"Did he just move?" I asked his assistant, who also seemed shocked.
"I think I saw it too. Let me call the doctor," he said and rang the bell by the bedside.
Me: Liam, I’ll call you back.
I ended the call and focused my gaze on Tristan, then his eyes fluttered open and I was the first person he saw.
"He’s awake!" I cried out, surprised and excited.
"Jessica?" He called my name but his voice was hoarse and dry.
I hurried to his side and sat on the stool before the bed, "Yes, it’s me." I held his hand, my face breaking into a happy smile. "I’m glad you’re awake."
He tried to force a smile. The door burst open and the doctors and nurses marched in. They checked on him, did some tests before the head doctor smiled at me.
"Congratulations, Ma’am, your boyfriend is alright. He has no serious injuries. We’ll watch him for a few more days before he’s discharged."
Boyfriend? Who told him that? This wasn’t the same doctor I told that I was Tristan’s partner.
It was as if his assistant read my mind. He cleared his throat and said, "His record stated that you were his girlfriend."
"Oh," I said calmly, looking down at the man who’s been staring at me with love in his eyes. His hold on my hand tightened slightly.
"Thank you, my love," he managed a smile.
I frowned slightly. Wasn’t he taking the play too seriously? I looked at the doctor, "Doc, are you sure there’s nothing to worry about? Please see if he’s truly alright."
The doctor was taken aback before he nodded, "Yes, Ma’am."
He tested Tristan’s eyesight, his eyes were fine. He checked his senses, they were perfectly fine, until his intelligence and memory were checked. And the result blew my mind.
Tristan remembered nothing! Not even his assistant! I was the only one he remembered, and as his wife!!
He claimed we were married three years ago, and had a lovely family before he got into an accident.
What kind of delusion did he fall into?
The doctor even advised that I couldn’t correct him yet, claiming it would be detrimental to him. I was supposed to live together with him, as a married couple. Not just that, we were supposed to be a happy couple!
