When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 123: Yi Ru 7
Tan You’s failure to find a match had undoubtedly become a source of regret for many viewers of the dating show. The production team also received many private messages, the gist of which was to ask Tan You to return.
"Return to the show?" Tan You looked at Zhou Yan across from her. "No. I have no desire to be in a relationship right now. As you can see, Sister Yan, I’m very busy."
As she spoke, she glanced at the design sketches scattered on her worktable. Customers were also coming into the shop every now and then, and buyer inquiries popped up on her computer from time to time.
Zhou Yan smiled. "I can see that. It’s just that the audience is clamoring for it. The station director specifically sent me to persuade you."
Tan You replied, "Please thank the director for me, and thank the fans for their support. But I personally have no intention of going on a dating show again."
’Since she’s said this, she’s highly unlikely to change her mind. This young woman seems very gentle, but she’s actually quite unyielding on the inside. She’s just wrapped herself in a gentle facade.’ Zhou Yan could roughly gauge her personality.
Zhou Yan offered a compromise. "If you don’t want to go, I won’t press you. How about this, could you post a video online? Your fans are eager to know how you’re doing."
Tan You thought that was acceptable. "Okay. Let’s do it together, then. No time like the present. Since you’re already here today, I’ll take you out tonight to try some of our authentic local food."
Of course, Zhou Yan wouldn’t refuse. "Sounds great! I’m the one who’s lucky, getting to have a night out with a beauty."
"Then I’m lucky, too," Tan You said faintly. Zhou Yan was taken aback for a moment, then the smile on her face grew even wider.
「Around four in the afternoon」
A new short video appeared out of the blue on Tan You’s account, which had previously only posted a few promotional clips. The video opened with Zhou Yan’s bright, beautiful smile. But unlike her usual modern, fashionable attire, Zhou Yan was now wearing a Ming-style hanfu.
She greeted the camera, "Hello, everyone! Long time no see. Look who I’m with!"
The camera panned slightly, and Tan You tilted her head, winking at the lens. "Hi, everyone. I’m hanging out with Sister Yan today."
Zhou Yan pretended to be displeased. "Your fans might be disappointed. They really want you to come back on the show."
Tan You laughed. "I think more than that, people are probably more curious about my current life and whether I’m doing well. Everything is good. Before I meet someone I like, I’ll focus on doing the things I love."
Zhou Yan ribbed her, "Then you should come on the show! We have a lot of excellent male contestants."
Tan You shook her head. "That’s too high-profile. I prefer my current quiet, low-key life. If everyone’s curious about my life, you can check my account from time to time. I’ll post some bits of my daily routine irregularly."
"For example, tonight, I’ll be taking Sister Yan to explore the water town..."
The video was less than three minutes long. Tan You only spoke a few lines at the beginning; Zhou Yan did most of the talking later. After leaving the show, both Tan You and Zhou Yan were clearly more relaxed, and their topics of conversation were much broader.
Not talking about men or love, the topics between women were clearly more numerous. Zhou Yan, having been a host for years, was worldly and knowledgeable. Tan You, on the other hand, had experienced two "mission worlds," which had also broadened her horizons immeasurably.
Despite an age gap of more than twelve years, they hit it off splendidly. Zhou Yan smiled. "It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a happy chat with a friend."
Tan You clinked her glass with hers. "Me too."
Yi Ru had friends in the hanfu community, but they were more like like-minded companions. As for true, close friends, Yi Ru had them too, but Tan You consciously avoided meeting them.
’Because she and Yi Ru are two different people. What if I say too much and the other person notices something is wrong?’ So, Tan You simply reduced the number of times she met with them.
Conveniently, she had a ready-made excuse: being busy with work. And since that friend was currently working abroad and not in the country, Tan You felt even more relieved.
Tan You’s refusal to return to the show inevitably disappointed her fans, but as they saw more and more of her daily life appearing on her platform, their grumbling gradually subsided.
Compared to a flash-in-the-pan appearance on the show, being able to see Tan You long-term was far more satisfying for them. For instance, tonight, Tan You started a livestream. She didn’t speak, and the camera only showed her hands; she didn’t even show her face.
But even so, the comments were still flying by.
Tan You secured the copper wire on the boiled silk. Only then did she have a moment to look at the livestream chat.
"I’ve shown everyone the silk reeling, boiling, and dyeing process before, and you’ve all been curious about what I’m making. I’m going to make velvet flowers..."
"Velvet flowers originated over a thousand years ago. Because their name, ’ronghua,’ sounds like the word for ’glory and splendor,’ they were once designated as tribute items for the court and were also known as ’palace flowers’..."
After a brief explanation, Tan You lowered her head and cut off the required length of processed velvet. Twisting the copper wire in opposite directions with both hands, she then rolled it between two wooden boards. Soon, a velvet strip appeared on the tabletop.
Tan You made a dozen more strips in succession. "This is the most basic component of a velvet flower—the velvet strip."
"Of course, you can also choose your favorite colors and mix and match as you please."
"There are many kinds of velvet flower creations these days, such as various flower arrangements, hairpin ornaments, decorations for paintings, or even 3D flowers. Basically, if you can imagine it, you can make it with velvet flowers."
Tan You spoke faintly, her hands never stopping. Soon, a little goose-yellow duck appeared on her desk.
Tan You poked the little duck’s body. "It’s still pretty crude. I’ll do some more research and try to make a hairpin flower next time."
Regarding the comments in the chat, Tan You just let out a low laugh. "Those of you who are interested can give it a try. Although you might not be able to monetize it, the process of slowly making something can help you quiet your mind and see yourself more clearly."
"You can buy boiled silk online these days, so you don’t have to go through all the complicated preliminary steps like I do..."
Pushing the little duck aside, Tan You took out some blue-toned silk threads and arranged them in order from light to dark. She just sat there quietly, not interacting much with the viewers.
She wasn’t even showing her face, yet no one could look away. It felt as if time had stopped in this livestream, a place where one could find inner peace.
Tan You continued, "During the Ming and Qing dynasties, velvet flowers were widely used in the imperial court..."
"Will I dance while wearing a velvet flower headdress? You all want to see me dance?" Around eleven o’clock, Tan You finished rolling the pile of velvet strips. She gathered them to one side and began to clean her desk, and the fans knew she was preparing to end the stream.
"I make hanfu; dancing isn’t my main profession," Tan You said in a low voice. "But if everyone wants to see it, I can perform a short dance sometime later."
"I’m not very good, so please bear with me."
A particularly conspicuous comment appeared in the chat: "You said you weren’t a good dancer on the dating show too, but everyone was stunned."
