When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 37: Tingting 35
The moment Han Tingting stepped out of the school gates, Yang Kun took her small handbag and held a sun umbrella over her. "Are you tired? Hot?"
"Neither tired nor hot. Why are you here? You’re not supposed to park at the school entrance." Han Tingting took a sip from the water bottle Yang Kun handed her. "Weren’t you on a business trip?"
"I just got back last night. My only regret is that I missed your graduation photoshoot." Yang Kun said, carrying Han Tingting’s small bag. "Mom, Dad, and Grandpa are already waiting in the private room. They know you’re getting your diploma today, so everyone wants to celebrate with you."
Tan You tactfully went to find a professor she wanted to see. Why would she stick around for a scene like this? Besides, hadn’t Han Tingting once stubbornly insisted she wasn’t looking for a relationship? In the end, she still couldn’t resist Yang Kun’s patient and persistent courtship.
Of course, Yang Kun was truly dedicated. He had been incredibly attentive during the courtship, and after they got together, he practically wanted to announce it to the whole world. Han Cunming was also pleased with Yang Kun, and as for Director Yang and his wife, that went without saying. Han Tingting was the girl they absolutely adored, wasn’t she?
When Han Tingting and Yang Kun first got together, Director Yang was ecstatic and deeply gratified. You couldn’t imagine how proud he was when he went out; he was constantly talking about Han Tingting.
Han Tingting and Yang Kun had barely gotten together before everyone knew about it.
Han Tingting’s eyes crinkled in a smile. "Really? Grandpa’s getting on in years. Wasn’t the trip tiring for him?"
"He was a little tired when he arrived last night, but when I saw him this morning, Grandpa was in high spirits." Yang Kun said, leading Han Tingting toward the parking lot. "You know how Grandpa is, don’t you? He’s hale and hearty and gets his check-ups on schedule every year."
Han Tingting was touched. "I’ve been so busy with my studies. You’ve had to help take care of Grandpa. It hasn’t been easy for you these past few years."
"You’re my girlfriend. It’s only right that I take care of you and your grandpa, especially since he’s your only close family." Yang Kun couldn’t bear to hear her talk like that and quickly changed the subject. "Besides, my parents live right in town, and they pop in to see him when they go to the factory. I really haven’t had to do much at all."
Han Tingting took a deep breath, trying to suppress the lump in her throat and the sting in her nose. "No matter what, I have to thank you, Uncle Yang, and Aunt Cui."
Yang Kun stopped in his tracks, a sudden chill running down his spine. "Whoa, hey, wifey. The way you’re talking is giving me a really bad feeling. We’ve been together for years now, you can’t just love me and leave me."
"You and your mouth..." Any trace of emotion Han Tingting had felt was instantly dispelled by his antics. She gave him a light punch. "That’s not how you use that idiom. Am I that kind of irresponsible person?"
"Of course not. My wifey is the most responsible person I know." Yang Kun relaxed, then put on a playful, cheeky grin. "It’s just that every time I’m with you, I feel a little insecure. I can never really relax."
"Look at you—you were the top scorer in the province on the college entrance exams, you go to a prestigious university, and you’re a big shot on campus. And me? My grades in middle and high school were terrible. I barely scraped by to get into college, and my school is nothing compared to yours."
"It’s only because my family has a bit of money that I have the freedom to mess around and start my own things. You’ve got the looks, the talent, and you’re amazing at making money. If we switched places, I could never do what you do."
"So I’m terrified that one day you’ll meet someone more outstanding, and then... what would I do?"
Han Tingting smiled. "You only see all of that, but you don’t know how much I envy you. Uncle Yang and Aunt Cui are wonderful people and very responsible parents."
"They’re so loving and kind to their children and so respectful and caring toward their elders. You have no idea how much I envy the atmosphere in your family."
"Those are all things I don’t have. There are plenty of outstanding people in the world, it’s true, but I already have you. As long as neither of us makes any terrible mistakes, then none of what you’re worried about will ever happen."
Yang Kun wasn’t an idiot. His grin was stretching from ear to ear. "So... Tingting, are you proposing to me?"
Han Tingting put on a proud front. "Just say yes or no. Or would you rather stay a ’noble bachelor’?"
"Of course I’ll say yes!" By now, they were in the car. Yang Kun opened the center console and pulled out a small box. "It’s a shame, though. I was planning to propose to you at lunch today, in front of our parents. I didn’t expect you to beat me to the punch."
Han Tingting was delighted. "Oh, really? We’re family. It doesn’t matter who asked first."
"That’s right, family," Yang Kun said, letting Han Tingting examine the ring. "But you have to give it back to me when we get out of the car. As happy as I am that you proposed, wifey, we still need to have a proper ceremony."
"Proposing is a man’s job!"
Han Tingting didn’t argue with him. "Alright. I’ll be waiting."
Even though she was a fashion designer, deep down, she wasn’t a very romantic person and didn’t place much importance on ceremonies. Perhaps it was because her inseparable best friend, Tan You, was completely immune to romance, but Han Tingting just wasn’t very interested in that sort of thing.
Yang Kun, by contrast, was much more romantic. He was always planning little surprises and giving small gifts, and he never forgot an anniversary or holiday.
In the private room, Director Yang, Cui He, and Han Cunming were all dressed impeccably. Director Yang was even wearing a suit and tie, with his hair perfectly styled with wax. He paced back and forth, a little agitated. "Why aren’t they here yet? I hope they weren’t held up on the way."
Cui He was pouring tea for Han Cunming. Hearing her husband, she shot Director Yang a look. "One of Tingting’s professors probably kept her for a chat. Speaking of which, the teachers all really adore Tingting. I don’t think I’ve ever met one who didn’t."
Han Cunming smiled. "It’s because she’s such a good student. Listen, do you hear that? Is that them arriving?"
Director Yang went to open the door. "Uncle Han, you’ve got sharp ears! I didn’t hear a thing. Tingting, Yang Kun, quickly, come in and sit down."
Han Tingting wasn’t shy. "Uncle Yang, Aunt Cui, it’s been a while! Yang Kun didn’t tell me you were coming. I only found out after I left campus."
Cui He pulled Han Tingting close affectionately. "We knew you were getting your diploma today. This is a joyous occasion, so we felt we had to celebrate."
Yang Kun had told his parents he was planning to propose, and Han Cunming knew as well. That’s why the more Cui He looked at Han Tingting now, the more she liked her. The two had been dating for nearly three years. If Han Tingting hadn’t still been in school, Cui He would have been pushing them to get married ages ago.
Now that she had finally graduated, it was time to put marriage on the agenda. A good girl like her wouldn’t have any trouble finding a husband, so it was best to snatch her up for their own family before someone else did.
Han Cunming patted Han Tingting’s shoulder. "Go on and sit down. It’s so hot out."
The food hadn’t started arriving yet when Yang Kun cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention.
Yang Kun stood up from his chair and knelt on one knee before Han Tingting. He tried to speak, but his eyes grew red before he could get the words out. Han Tingting wanted to laugh, but for some reason, tears began to fall from her own eyes as well.
