Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Initial Grand Gift Pack

"But you drew the perfect bone structure," the Beauty System said. "Your Beauty Value has gone up by a huge chunk. Are you sure you don’t want to look at your stats?"

Tan You narrowed her eyes. "Other than my Intelligence Value, I couldn’t care less about the rest."

Despite her words, she still pulled up the system’s holographic screen. Her chubby avatar was still on display, and Tan You looked toward the status panel.

Appearance: 80

Spiritual Power: 52

Intelligence: 60

Physique: 40

Charm: 20

All values are on a 100-point scale. The system reserves the right of final interpretation.

The "perfect bone structure" alone had given Tan You an additional 30 points of Beauty Value. Tan You could only sigh softly. She really didn’t want to look in a mirror to see how different she was from before.

"My spiritual power actually went up by two points?" Tan You raised an eyebrow slightly. "Where did that come from?"

The Beauty System couldn’t explain it either. "Perhaps it’s because you’ve been working so hard?"

’All its skills are focused on raising the Beauty Value, so how would it know how spiritual power is increased?’

Tan You knew she wouldn’t get a clear answer out of it. In any case, she didn’t feel there was any benefit to her increased spiritual power. "I’m going to rest. Contact me again when the initial gift pack has arrived."

Soon, the sound of long, deep breaths filled the room. The Beauty System spun around twice before finally going whimpering to contact the main system.

Tan You’s nap didn’t last long. She was jolted awake by the shrill ringing of the telephone. Seeing the sun high in the sky, Tan You knew the caller had to be her mother, Cheng Wenhui.

She rolled out of bed and answered the phone. "Hello."

Cheng Wenhui’s voice on the other end was calm. "We’ve arrived. Let your grandpa and grandma know."

"Mhm," Tan You responded softly before adding, "Got it."

Cheng Wenhui was long used to Tan You’s quiet nature, her own voice cold. "Study hard at home, and don’t spend all your time thinking about going to that book rental shop in town."

"Also, do some more chores around the house..."

Tan You listened in silence as Cheng Wenhui spoke, feeling a sense of detachment in herself. She had spent over sixty years in a task world, yet she rarely thought of Cheng Wenhui and the others.

Cheng Wenhui eventually ran out of things to say. "That’s all. Study hard at home."

Tan You knew that Cheng Wenhui placed extreme importance on studying. After hanging up, Tan You had no desire to go back to sleep. Napping on a hot day wasn’t comfortable anyway; it was better to come out and sit for a bit.

Tan Deming was by the well, washing rice to make lunch. Tan You went over and took over his task. "Let me. They’ve arrived in C City."

Tan Deming sat down beside Tan You. "Don’t blame your mother for punishing you. Your grades have always been very good, so it’s understandable that she’s angry you scored so low this time."

"You know she’s always valued grades above all else. Plus, your eyesight isn’t good, so you can’t do much even if you get a job." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

Tan You nodded. "I understand. I’ll study hard from now on."

How could she not understand? She had seen firsthand the kind of life Han Tingting had once lived. Many people said a formal education wasn’t that important, but was it really not? If it wasn’t, why did everyone fight tooth and nail to get into those famous schools?

Tan Deming said his piece and left it at that. He had practically raised Tan You himself, so her personality was very similar to his. Both were the silent type; they could sit together for a whole afternoon without saying a word.

Making lunch left Tan You drenched in sweat. Feeling the soft flesh on her arms, Tan You added "exercise" to her to-do list. It wasn’t for the sake of a good figure, but because her body was just too weak.

After lunch, the old man cooled off under the persimmon tree outside the kitchen while Tan You dug out all her third-year middle school textbooks. Although she had scored very well on the high school entrance exam when she was Han Tingting, decades had passed since then. She couldn’t guarantee she’d remember everything.

But her extraordinary memory was no empty boast. After flipping through her language textbook once, Tan You felt her anxieties settle. She could recall many of the key concepts after just looking at them twice. With that, Tan You wasn’t so worried anymore.

Tan Deming was naturally pleased to see Tan You studying. The old man scooted closer to her, fanning her from time to time. The atmosphere under the persimmon tree was, for a time, very harmonious.

That evening, Tan You lay down on her bed after washing up. Her grandmother was extremely frugal and would nag endlessly if a light or fan was left on. Not wanting to listen to her, Tan You preferred to turn off the lights and go to bed early.

Just as she was silently reciting math formulas, the Beauty System, which had been gone for most of the day, finally appeared before her.

Tan You glanced at it. "Has the initial gift pack arrived?"

The Beauty System did a little twirl in front of her. "Yes, the initial gift pack has been delivered to the Host’s inventory. Please check it."

A rare spark of curiosity flickered in Tan You. Following the system’s guidance, she opened her system inventory. Sure enough, a gift-box-like item sat in one of the slots. Other than that, the inventory was empty.

Tan You silently thought ’open pack,’ and the initial gift pack burst open before her like a firework. After the sparkles faded, Tan You fell silent as she looked at the three rewards that had appeared.

"The rewards from you Beauty Systems are truly... consistent," she said, finally managing to find the word after a long pause.

Tan You was already over it. She had accepted drawing the ’perfect bone structure’ from the lottery. She thought the initial gift pack would offer something different, but who could have guessed it would give her ’flawless, jade-like skin,’ thirty Beauty Value points, and ten Energy Points.

Tan You looked at the thirty Beauty Value points, conflicted. "Can they be exchanged for Intelligence Value? By the way, if this Beauty Value is added to my Appearance stat, wouldn’t I be maxed out?"

"Nope," the Beauty System said, waving its arms. "And the Beauty Value can’t be used on you. It’ll have its uses later when you go out on missions."

Tan You sighed. "So this Beauty Value is completely useless to me? And I can’t use it for the lottery either?"

The Beauty System fell silent, but Tan You wasn’t particularly disappointed. "Well, at least there are ten Energy Points. Can’t complain about a freebie."

The Beauty System instantly perked up. "Host, do the lottery! Do the lottery! You have enough Energy Points for a ten-pull now! More pulls are bound to create a miracle!"

Tan You was unenthusiastic. "The prizes are all just Beauty Value, which is useless to me. The probability of me drawing Intelligence Value is only one in thirty-six. Why would I waste Energy Points on that?"

"No pulls. Not doing it."

The Beauty System spun around anxiously. "Host, are you even a girl? Don’t all girls care about their appearance? Why don’t you care at all?"

Tan You rolled over. "A beautiful face is merely bones underneath; this physical form is ultimately an illusion. I would be more tempted by a slight reduction in my nearsightedness than by this Beauty Value."

The Beauty System had no choice but to play its trump card. "I heard that in advanced mission worlds, you can learn a lot of advanced knowledge. I heard there’s a type of eye drop that can cure nearsightedness and restore perfect vision."

Tan You sat up excitedly. "Does something like that really exist?"
