When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 67: Chi Mo 21
Gao Jing laughed the hardest. "So how on earth did you get your driver’s license?"
Tan You thought for a moment. "Maybe because I was too young back then?"
Lin Meng barely suppressed her laughter as she comforted Tan You. "It’s okay, you just need more practice. Besides, with a face like yours, who would have the heart to scold you?"
Tan You let out a long sigh. "I feel like dancing is much harder than driving, but I just don’t dare to get on the road. I always feel like my reflexes aren’t quick enough, and I’m terrified of causing an accident."
Zhou Wenwen offered a suggestion. "Transportation is so advanced these days. Honestly, sometimes driving yourself is less convenient than taking public transit. And there are so many ride-hailing apps now. If it’s really not working out, just take a cab. Don’t be so hard on yourself."
Tan You replied, "I still want to practice more. It’s a useful skill to have, after all."
’In my real life, my poor eyesight meant I probably would never have gotten a driver’s license. Now that I’ve come to a world like this, I don’t want to miss the chance. It’s a way to make up for that regret.’
"Enough about me. How have you all been the past few days?" After sharing her own experiences, Tan You started asking about the others.
Zhou Wenwen said, "Just teaching and prepping for classes. Final exams are coming up soon, so I’m busy getting the test papers ready. Life is pretty much the same as before."
Lin Meng added, "I know the feeling. I took time off right before the year-end rush, and now that I’m back, I’m completely buried in work. I’ve been getting less than six hours of sleep a night lately."
Gao Jing said, "I’m just picking products and livestreaming every day, no different than before. Maybe our lives will change after the show airs, but for now, everything’s business as usual."
The four beautiful women, each with her own unique style, chatted casually in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. It was a scene that would draw gazes anywhere. Tan You had deliberately chosen a seat at the very edge to attract less attention.
Gao Jing was exasperated. "Look at you. Why are you so low-key? We’re this gorgeous, we should be flaunting it! But you, you spend all day wishing you could just hide away."
Tan You pleaded, "Oh, give me a break. Being on stage is more than enough for me. I want to have some semblance of a private life, not be under a microscope every second of the day."
"It’s enough for people to see my work. There’s no need for them to be curious about me as a person."
"People are naturally voyeuristic," Zhou Wenwen said with a smile. "Otherwise, why would the paparazzi always be hounding celebrities and top influencers?"
"I wouldn’t dare compare myself to celebrities," Tan You said, shaking her head. "It’s enough to do one thing well in your lifetime. Right now, I just want to focus on my dancing and hopefully perform on bigger stages in the future."
As she spoke, she glanced around the restaurant, and her eyes suddenly paused. "You guys didn’t say the male guests were eating here too."
"Where?" Gao Jing whipped her head around and spotted Xu Jike, Shi Lei, and Xiang Zhe several tables away. Seeing the women look over, Xu Jike raised his glass in greeting.
Lin Meng couldn’t bear to watch. "I can’t help but feel he’s a bit... greasy."
Tan You narrowed her eyes. "I think so too. It feels a little phony."
Zhou Wenwen said, "You get that feeling too? It seems like everyone’s like that nowadays, each one better at faking it than the last."
Since they had already made eye contact, they couldn’t pretend not to see each other. Soon, the two tables were merged into one. Tan You’s smile became more reserved, a far cry from the carefree way she’d been with the other women just moments before.
Ningning tugged on Tan You’s hand. "Momo, the little cakes at the shop next door are really good. Want to go get some with me?"
Tan You was desperate for an escape. She squeezed the little girl’s hand. "Sure! Tongtong, Dashuai, do you want to come with us?"
Dashuai replied, "Okay, Auntie! I’ll take good care of my sisters."
Tan You smiled, raising an eyebrow. Her voice subconsciously became several degrees sweeter and softer. "You’re so great, Dashuai! Auntie will treat you all to some little snacks..."
Chi Mo’s voice was naturally very sweet, but because Tan You was usually so aloof, her tone carried an unconscious chill. Now, as she smiled and her voice softened, everyone felt their hearts tingle.
Leading the three children out of the restaurant, Chi Mo held one of the little girls by the hand while Dashuai walked ahead. The group made a beeline for the bakery next door.
Tan You didn’t care what topics the others were discussing. ’It’s not that I’m a fan of children in general,’ she thought. ’I just like kids who are well-behaved and obedient. I know that doesn’t sound great, but I really can’t stand rowdy children.’
’I really like these three kids. They’re quiet, sensible, and don’t make a fuss. Their parents must have raised them well. My biggest fear is dealing with spoiled brats, because I’m not a very patient person.’
Tan You used the trip to the pastry shop to hide out for about ten minutes. When she returned, she was carrying a large bag. With so many cast members, plus the director’s team, there wouldn’t be much for each person once everything was divided.
Seeing Tan You approaching with the large bag, Xu Jike hurried over to help. Tan You was insistent. "No need, it’s just a few more steps to the table."
’Since I don’t want to get involved with him, I can’t accept his help, even if he’s just being a gentleman. If I accept his advances, won’t that send the wrong signal?’
Xu Jike was a little disappointed, but he was good at masking his emotions. "Why be so formal? This is what friends are for."
Tan You pressed her lips together. "Well, thank you, but I can really manage on my own. It’s not heavy."
’I don’t even want to be friends with him. Besides, sometimes ’friends’ is just an excuse. The ultimate goal is to get closer, scheming of ways to make you theirs.’
After lunch, everyone made their way to the hotel where Tan You was staying. Compared to last time when she had traveled light, Tan You had brought an extra suitcase this time.
"I heard that Dashuai likes quiet and enjoys brain-teaser games, so I got you a Lego set. Ta-da! See if you like it!"
Tan You pulled a large box from the very bottom of her suitcase. "It’s a model ship set. I heard that when it’s fully assembled, it’s three meters long. Are you up for the challenge, Dashuai?"
Dashuai ran his hand over the Lego box. "I am! Thank you, Momo!"
"You’re welcome. I’m just happy you like it." Kneeling in front of her suitcase, Tan You turned and smiled at Dashuai. He hid behind the large box, only his eyes peeking out, but his ears were bright red.
"I know a master artisan who is incredibly skilled, so I had her make two little dresses for you girls. See if you like them?" Gifts for the little girls were easier. Two small dresses for each. As for the "master artisan," it was, of course, Tan You herself.
She quite enjoyed making clothes, especially for little girls, and she always went all out to make them as beautiful as possible.
Ningning’s mouth fell open. "It’s so pretty! Thank you, Momo! I love it so much."
Not to be outdone, Tongtong chimed in, "I love it too! Thank you, Momo."
Tan You said, "I’m glad you like them. I made sure to get your sizes, so they should fit perfectly. I’ve already washed them, so you can wear them right away."
