When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 73: Chi Mo 27
Tan You herself really had no such inclinations, but who knew how Chi Mo thought? So, Tan You didn’t commit to a firm stance. What if she ended up being wrong?
Tan You had a comfortable time at Gao Jing’s house. She played with Legos with Dashuai and taught Tongtong how to draw, making the time pass by easily.
Gao Jing cupped her face in her hands. "I think you’re just being humble. You always say you don’t have any strengths, but don’t you know how to sketch?"
Tan You smiled. "I’ve only scratched the surface. I’m far from an expert."
’Speaking of drawing, Han Tingting was the one who was truly skilled. But she couldn’t practice when she was a Soul Body. All she could do was accumulate a mountain of theoretical knowledge, while her actual hands-on experience was pitifully rare.’
’As for Chi Mo, you could say she knew how to draw. After all, she could paint her face to create all sorts of looks—doesn’t that count? So Tan You wasn’t shy about people knowing this "skill".’
’Then again, the more skills I learn in the future, the more careful I’ll have to be on missions not to deviate too far from the original host’s character. Some lies can be smoothed over, but others can’t.’
Around two in the afternoon, Tan You and Gao Jing each boarded the production’s minivan, rolling a suitcase behind them. Once on board, they naturally had their routine interview, which was just about how they’d spent the last few days.
Tan You’s eyes were half-closed, a lazy look on her face. "It was great. Life wasn’t much different than before."
Gao Jing was a pro at livening things up. Seeing Tan You’s lack of enthusiasm, she consciously took the lead. With her lively and witty personality, the van was filled with laughter for the entire ride.
Tan You would crack a smile whenever she heard something particularly funny. She liked Gao Jing’s personality—always able to bring joy to others. But she had no desire to become someone like that. Her own personality was already set in stone.
’And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the way I am.’
This segment was being filmed in H City. As they walked out of the airport, Gao Jing took a deep breath. "Ah, it’s so nice here. It feels like we’ve suddenly stepped back into spring."
They had taken a late flight, so by the time they arrived at the hotel, it was already seven o’clock. The production team wasn’t completely heartless; dinner had, of course, been prepared for them long in advance.
"Since we’re in H City, we absolutely have to try the local specialties," the director announced through a small megaphone. "Our show is all about being heartwarming and healing, seeing beautiful sights, and tasting all kinds of delicacies. So today, the production team has specially prepared some local specialties for everyone."
"Wenchang chicken, Jiaji duck, Dongshan goat hotpot..."
Tan You’s eyes lit up. When there was delicious food involved, she couldn’t help but get excited. ’Perhaps only after I’ve seen the whole world will I become completely unflappable,’ she mused.
Xu Jike was sitting diagonally across from Tan You, so he had a clear view of her every expression. In the past, he’d always found it boring when he saw women who loved to eat and post about it everywhere. He used to think it was a waste of time.
But now, seeing Chi Mo like this, Xu Jike couldn’t help but wonder if his past self had been unknowingly missing out. ’Loving food isn’t a flaw, after all,’ he thought. ’It’s just a matter of personal preference.’
Tan You had no idea what Xu Jike was thinking. In fact, she had no attention to spare for anyone else right now, and the same was true for the other guests. With a feast before them, who had time to think about anything else?
Once the lavish dinner concluded, it was time to move on to the next part of the show’s schedule. Before the first episode’s filming wrapped up, everyone had drawn names for the "Gift of Warmth" segment. Tan You had drawn Zhou Wenwen, but she didn’t know who had drawn her name.
As the youngest guest on the show, Tan You was naturally up first. She didn’t try to build any suspense, simply taking out a book. "I don’t usually read a lot," she said, "but I really like this book."
"Wenwen mentioned that her ex-husband’s family favored sons over daughters. What I want to say is that from ancient times to the present day, there have been countless outstanding and remarkable women. They weren’t afraid of public scrutiny or criticism, and they still managed to carve out a place for themselves in the world."
"Some became empresses, some became scientists, some were politicians... there are just so many," Tan You said with a smile. "I’m giving this to Wenwen’s daughter in the hope that she won’t be influenced by what others think. I hope she’ll strive to walk her own path and achieve so much that no one can say a word against her."
Zhou Wenwen accepted the book. "I’ll pass it on to her. I’m sure she’ll love it."
Then, as if performing a magic trick, Tan You produced another small box. "I said I was preparing a gift for you, so of course I didn’t forget. I visited your school’s online forum, by the way. Your students think very highly of you."
"I have a habit of making scrapbooks, so I made one for you, too. It has clips from your lectures, comments from your students, and all the various honors you’ve earned. In everyone’s eyes, you’re an incredibly outstanding person."
The unsaid message was, ’So don’t pay any mind to your ex-husband’s family putting you down. You are wonderful.’ Tan You didn’t say this out loud, but Zhou Wenwen understood her meaning.
Her eyes grew red. "I love it. Thank you, Momo. This is the second-most heartwarming gift I’ve received this year."
Lin Meng asked curiously, "What was the first?"
"This one," Zhou Wenwen said, holding up the book from Tan You. "This book is quite obscure, isn’t it? It must have been difficult for you to find."
Tan You replied, "It did take some time to find, but all the trouble was worth it, as long as you both like it."
"We both love it," Zhou Wenwen said with a nod. She gave Tan You a hug. "I really, really love it."
Compared to the scrapbook Chi Mo had made for her, Zhou Wenwen preferred the gift Tan You had given to her daughter even more.
With Tan You’s gift given, it was logically Zhou Wenwen’s turn to present hers. She composed herself, then looked toward Shi Lei. "I heard last time that you like listening to King Liu’s songs, and that there’s one album you’ve never managed to collect."
She pulled an album out from under the table; it even had an autograph on it. "My professor knows King Liu’s agent. She went out of her way to get this album for me. I hope you like it."
Shi Lei was both shocked and delighted. "Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for this album for a very long time, but it’s incredibly rare. I love it. Thank you."
Zhou Wenwen smiled. "You’re welcome. As long as you like it, that’s what matters. I’m not much of a music listener, so with me, this album would just be gathering dust."
The gift-giving segment went on for a while. After Shi Lei, Lin Meng, Xiang Zhe, and the others had all given their gifts, only Gao Jing and Tan You had yet to receive one.
Tan You glanced at Gao Jing, then at Xu Jike. She already knew from her system that Xu Jike had drawn her name, but on the surface, ’Chi Mo’ wasn’t supposed to know. Therefore, Tan You couldn’t let anything show.
The thing was, Tan You was truly terrible at acting, so she couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. However, she was the type of person who appeared more composed the more nervous she felt. As a result, to everyone else, Chi Mo looked perfectly calm.
As it happened, Xu Jike was after Xiang Zhe, so now all eyes fell on him. Xu Jike cleared his throat and glanced at Tan You. "Last night, I was passing through a department store and happened to wander over to the cosmetics counter. I feel like I’ve discovered a whole new world."
