When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 116: Only by Being a Good Person Can One Be Worthy of Her
The study group was ready for everything except the east wind. After tonight, it would be the weekend, and starting next week, they could pack their bags and head home promptly as soon as the class bell rang.
The final night of struggle awaited, and the two group leaders naturally had to be fully alert.
As was customary, Jiang Shuyao sent a message to the guy downstairs, telling him how long the practice would take, and if it got too late, she would have him leave first.
But these words usually had no effect.
Because no matter how late, Pei Yan would always wait for her. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Lately, the most bored of them all had to be Chen Jin. Kanzi had just had his appendix removed and was ordered by his parents not to come home later than ten o’clock. The strategist had some issues at home and had no time to hang out.
Even more outrageous was Brother Yan’s sudden reformation, casting Chen Jin into an unprecedented state of confusion.
Before, they had asked the boss why he had made such a drastic change.
Brother Yan casually remarked, "Only by studying hard and being a good person can I be worthy of my girlfriend."
The three automatically ignored the first half of the sentence.
Chen Jin shamelessly asked, "Brother Yan, who is your girlfriend?"
"Jiang Shuyao."
The air froze for two seconds.
Chen Jin erupted into a laughter like that of a pig being slaughtered.
Xu Kanfeng clutched his stomach in convulsions, "F*ck, Chen Jin, stop laughing, I can’t hold it anymore. My surgery scar is about to burst, haha!"
He Qingzhou sat nearby, struggling to contain a smirk.
Sister Yao would agree to be Brother Yan’s girlfriend?
Going by what the boss said originally, if Sister Yao really got together with Brother Yan before the college entrance exam, without a second word, the three brothers would go eat shit, just to taste it on Brother Yan’s behalf.
At that moment, they were sure the boss must have caught some bizarre illness, even more terrible than irritability.
Love delusion, perhaps?
Really going to die of laughter, what to do!
Just like now, numerous rounds of gaming made Chen Jin yawn incessantly.
Glancing at Brother Yan next to him, almost ripping his scalp over a physics problem, Chen Jin’s face began to twitch uncontrollably again.
Half an hour ago, Brother Yan was on the first multiple-choice question.
Half an hour later, the second one.
Did he choose an answer for the first question?
He did.
Choice E: None of the above answers are correct.
Pfft.
Chen Jin took several deep breaths but finally burst out laughing.
Already exhausted, Pei Yan’s irritation was exacerbated by the laughter. His pen flew out of his hand and smashed against the back wall of the classroom, breaking in two.
A cold glance swept over, "Get lost!"
The laughter ceased abruptly.
As if swallowing a fly, not able to spit it out or swallow it, Chen Jin spoke in an extremely awkward tone, "I promise I won’t laugh anymore, Brother Yan, please don’t kick me out."
God knows how lonely he felt right now.
Pei Yan turned his head away to ignore the fool, picked up the cell phone beside him, and unlocked the screen to check for any new messages.
As if they were soulmates, Jiang Shuyao had already packed her things and was tiptoeing toward the second-grade classroom.
He stubbornly waited for her every night for a whole hour, that guy must have been bored to death.
The lights were on in the second-grade classroom. She stood quietly outside the door, only poking her head slightly to peek inside.
There were two silhouettes in the back of the classroom. She hadn’t expected Chen Jin to still be there this late.
The thought of going in was dismissed, and she instead took out her cell phone to send Pei Yan a WeChat message.
At the staircase entrance, Lu Chen had been standing for a long time.
He had almost followed the girl all the way down, then watched her carefully approach the door of the second-grade classroom.
The night was deep, but her eyes were extraordinarily bright, carrying a kind of tenderness he had never seen before.
"Jiang Shuyao." For some reason, Lu Chen suddenly called out to her.
That voice on such a night sounded particularly ethereal.
Jiang Shuyao instinctively turned around and discovered Lu Chen at the staircase entrance, gazing intently at her.
The two of them made eye contact for a few seconds, neither of them speaking.
What had been the most common of greetings was now infused with an entirely different atmosphere.
Finally, it was Jiang Shuyao who broke the silence.
She said, "I’m waiting for someone."
She guessed that Lu Chen’s intent must have been to ask her what she was doing standing there, why she wasn’t leaving.
After Jiang Shuyao spoke, Lu Chen simply smiled and said, "Mhm, head back early and good luck with the competition."
Tonight, the class monitor was as amiable and approachable as ever, but she saw an indescribable emotion in his eyes.
As if he could see through her true purpose for standing at the entrance to class two.
The voices outside the door drew the two in the classroom out.
Chen Jin was the last to leave, turning off the lights and locking the door.
Pei Yan was holding a Chinese textbook, and with a long reach, he took Jiang Shuyao’s backpack from her back.
He unzipped the backpack with ease, slipped the textbook in, then, holding the bag, he turned to the girl and asked, "Do you want to go for night snacks first, or go home?"
With someone else present, Jiang Shuyao felt a bit unnatural.
But she wasn’t opposed to it inwardly.
She glanced at Lu Chen, then at Chen Jin behind her.
She suggested, "Let’s go home first."
Her aunt had left a pot of soup before she left, knowing she would be competing in a few days; it was specially made to nourish the brain.
Chen Jin, having locked the door, came over and lazily said, "Come on, we don’t have to get up early tomorrow anyway. Why don’t we form a team and go to North City for some mutton hotpot?"
Near the winter solstice, it was a custom in Rong City to eat mutton.
Old Jiang would usually go to the farmers’ market half a month in advance to lug back dozens of pounds of lamb chops for sealing and marinating, so that by the New Year, he and Uncle Pei could down several glasses just accompanied by marinated lamb chops.
Thinking of it, this year’s winter solstice at home was really quiet.
The girl’s thoughts weren’t written on her face, but Pei Yan could guess what she was thinking almost accurately.
Add to that Chen Jin’s overly pitiful and desperate expression for teaming up, which was particularly jarring to the eye.
In the late evening, three guys and a girl stood at the classroom door; the patrolling security guard saw them and thought they were up to no good.
Subtly, the decision for mutton hotpot had already been silently agreed upon by Pei Yan.
But while the person concerned had not yet spoken, the continuously silent Lu Chen suddenly slowly said, "Count me in as well, let’s go Dutch."
Chen Jin silently cursed "Damn," seeing the potential for a spectacle.
Then he turned back to look at Brother Yan’s reaction.
Tsk, true to the leader.
He nodded without even batting an eyelash.
Jiang Shuyao gave Pei Yan a somewhat surprised look; judging by his temperament, he should have ignored the suggestion or outright refused.
Clearly, he was far more magnanimous tonight than at any other time.
Thinking this, Jiang Shuyao couldn’t help but reveal a smile.
Although North City was authentic, the distance was too great; ultimately, they settled for a soup pot restaurant near the school.
The four of them together made a full table.
Chen Jin headed straight for the condiment section upon entering the restaurant, craning his neck and shouting at the waiter, "We’re out of cilantro, get some more out here."
Almost immediately after his voice fell, two voices rang out simultaneously at the dining table.
"She doesn’t eat cilantro."
"Don’t put cilantro in hers."
Well.
Chen Jin was stunned.
The air suddenly grew stagnant.
Pei Yan and Lu Chen sat facing each other, with Jiang Shuyao squeezed in the corner spot, awkwardly between them.
She pursed her lips and turned her head to Chen Jin to explain, "I’m allergic to cilantro, but I can eat anything else."
After the last incident with the crayfish, Jiang Shuyao really got scared by her own allergies.
However, it was indeed a pity to eat mutton without cilantro.
