When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 193: He Feels Suffocated Being Her Boyfriend
Pei Yan stared at the screen in contemplation for a while before rising and walking over to Jiang Xubai’s workstation.
He knocked on the desk with his hand a couple of times, catching Zhang Xinxin off guard as she raised her head to look at him.
"Switch seats."
Jiang Xubai quickly let go of the hand wrapped around his arm, stood up, and asked, "When?"
Pei Yan turned back to move his computer, "Now."
With Zhang Xinxin around, it really was distracting. Jiang Xubai, feeling guilty, didn’t ask any further questions. He quickly unplugged the computer cables, grabbed the main unit, and prepared to move.
Opposite them, Jiang Shuyao’s face didn’t look too good.
Her request for some personal space had not only failed to work but had successfully enraged someone.
She was still thinking about how to tell him she wanted to go to the bar tonight to watch the Zhongyuan Band’s performance.
The website design was finalized, and the follow-up work was going to be carried out promptly. Boss Pei couldn’t get away tonight, so could he rest easy letting her go alone?
The answer was undoubtedly yes.
But she was more curious whether his and Jiang Xubai’s seat swapping was temporary or permanent.
"Princess."
A casual voice suddenly rang from under the desk.
Jiang Shuyao jumped, bent her head down, and met his intently staring eyes.
A lazy smile hung on his lips, "You’re stepping on the wire."
"..."
Jiang Shuyao glanced over with the corner of her eye, remained silent for two seconds, and reluctantly moved her foot away.
The fussing underneath continued.
Two minutes passed, and it was still ongoing.
She frowned at her computer screen and asked under the desk, "Isn’t it fixed yet?"
Because she had to make room for him, her legs were uncomfortably trapped between the computer case and his arm, making it quite uncomfortable.
Nearly numb, space finally cleared next to her as that messy hair popped up from the opposite side.
She couldn’t stand it anymore.
Jiang Shuyao dug out a comb from her backpack and tossed it over.
She didn’t know how many nights he had continuously slept at the base, but one thing was clear—programming could truly transform a fine young lord into a complete wreck overnight.
The apricot-colored sandalwood comb was exquisitely crafted, emanating a pleasant scent of agarwood.
Pei Yan leaned back lazily in his chair, fiddling carelessly with the comb in his hand.
After a while, under the desk, he gently nudged the girl’s skirt with his knee, asking with a smirk, "I haven’t washed my hair in two days, would you mind if it got dirty?"
"Two days without washing."
Jiang Shuyao coldly glanced at his disheveled hair, "Only two days? Are you kidding?"
She withdrew her gaze, calmly said, "Take some time off this afternoon to get a haircut, your hair has gotten too long."
"You’re coming with me."
"Go by yourself, I’m busy this afternoon."
Heh.
Pei Yan chuckled, twirled the comb twice, and casually threw it into the drawer next to him.
He folded his hands behind his head, leaned back, and sighed deeply, "Man, being your boyfriend is really damn stifling."
Boss Pei finished lamenting as several pairs of eyes shot glances around him.
Most of these glances were barely holding back laughter, and some were schadenfreude.
Jiang Shuyao didn’t bother with him, pulling out a web design book she had borrowed from the library and started flipping through it.
Out of sight, out of mind, she read the book and practiced coding, focusing relatively well.
After finishing the twenty-third line, a whining voice faintly carried from diagonally across.
"Xiao Bai, you should walk me downstairs. Otherwise, I’m too scared to go."
"It’s said that a creepy guy sneaked into the girls’ dormitory before, and all six floors’ surveillance was destroyed. The school hasn’t even caught him yet. It’s so scary."
"You must walk me down, no matter how busy you are tonight."
...
The typing stopped as Jiang Shuyao’s eyelid twitched, and she instinctively looked up at the person across from her.
Boss Pei was engrossed in the code with a blank expression, oblivious to the sounds of the outside world.
She didn’t hear anything more from Zhang Xinxin.
But it seemed that after that, her thoughts weren’t as calm.
It took her two hours in the morning to finish the entire book, marking difficult sections with a pen.
Looking around, everyone was deeply engrossed, the intermittent clatter of keyboards creating a distinct atmosphere of busyness.
At lunchtime, takeout ordered by the base arrived, and Jiang Shuyao got up to retrieve it, opening the bag.
A hand with distinct knuckles quickly entered her view, taking away the takeout box as a somewhat hoarse voice said, "Don’t eat this."
Pei Yan put the lunch box down casually, closed his laptop, and led her outside.
"Where are we going?"
"I’m taking you out to eat."
Jiang Shuyao quickly grabbed his arm, standing still, "I—I want to eat the takeout."
It had smelled quite good just before.
Princess hadn’t tasted boxed meals before, curiosity filling her eyes.
Silly girl.
Pei Yan couldn’t help but chuckle looking at her like that.
After a standoff, he conceded, "Alright, then let you try it."
Jiang Shuyao carried the boxed lunch to her seat, thought for a moment, then ran over to push the opposite chair next to hers positing it neatly.
Someone stood nearby, his expression complicated.
She didn’t look at him but pointed to the chair beside her, "Sit, I have something to tell you."
Oh, so there was something.
Pei Yan silently complied with the Princess’s order, folding his long legs under the small table, and ate a couple of mouthfuls with a heavy heart.
The quietness of the person beside him made Jiang Shuyao turn her head.
She spoke softly, "The school is still investigating the rooftop incident last time."
If Zhang Xinxin hadn’t mentioned it, she would have almost forgotten.
The university was different from high school. Guys sneaking into girls’ dorms and purposely damaging the surveillance cameras could lead to serious consequences, even surveillance.
Surveillance could mean not even getting a diploma.
If her joke led to her boyfriend getting penalized, she would be devastated.
Pei Yan pulled out a tissue to wipe the grains of rice near his mouth, draped his arm behind her chair, stretched his stiff legs, and spoke with a calm tone.
"Isn’t there a camera in the dormitory building? Why the investigation?"
Jiang Shuyao frowned, "Someone said you tampered with the surveillance."
"Who said that?"
Who said—
Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at him, "Then how did you get up there?"
Pei Yan nonchalantly tugged at his lip.
He twirled a strand of her hair dangling at the edge of the chair, "I wore a mask and a hat."
Jiang Shuyao felt like she was hearing things.
"Let it go, that matter," Pei Yan patted her head half-jokingly, "So what if they trace it back to me? It’s a matter of life and death, especially for my own girlfriend."
"..."
She was on the verge of tears.
But strangely, the incident had occurred some time ago; since the surveillance wasn’t tampered with, logically, the school should have easily identified the culprit.
The delay and the perpetrator still being at large, what did that mean?
As the lunch progressed, Jiang Shuyao’s feelings fluctuated wildly. By two o’clock, she decided to pack up her things and planned to take that guy out for a haircut.
He was called away by Jiang Xubai, currently locked in a meeting room discussing the project.
She stood next to his seat, her gaze involuntarily moving towards the computer screen in front of her.
In the base, tasks were clearly divided; Boss Pei was responsible for setting up the overall architecture, while Jiang Xubai and a few seniors handled the front-end webpages and data transmission.
However, once the design was finalized, it rarely changed, making her role as the chief designer seem rather leisurely.
