When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 266: Lu’s Mother in Trouble
The elevator descended steadily. Jiang Shuyao seldom saw Pei Yan act so aggressively, and he had not told her what exactly he would discuss with Lu Chen before coming, at least regarding the condition about swapping Xinyuan for Yuan Chong’s incriminating evidence, which she still found unbelievable.
Besides that, there was another thing.
What did Lu Chen mean by the first sentence he said in the meeting room? She couldn’t understand it, but she had an intuition that it was definitely related to her.
"Pei Yan."
As they stepped out of the office building’s lobby, she softly called out to him.
Pei Yan turned around, his eyes gentle as he looked at her, "What do you want to ask?"
"Will you tell me the truth about what I want to know?" Jiang Shuyao asked.
Since the very beginning, by allowing her to listen outside the door, Pei Yan was prepared for some things to be known to her.
He held her hand and continued walking forward, silent, seemingly pondering how to narrate everything that had happened that night.
Jiang Shuyao’s heart pounded intensely; she felt nervous for no reason and couldn’t help but tug on his sleeve, "Pei Yan, maybe we—"
The remainder of her words was interrupted by a sudden sharp screeching of brakes and screams ahead.
"Oh my god, it looks like there’s been an accident."
Many pedestrians slowly gathered around.
Jiang Shuyao and Pei Yan exchanged a glance, then followed the crowd towards the scene.
It wasn’t an accident; a van had brake failure and nearly hit an elderly woman, but fortunately, the driver reacted in time and turned the vehicle towards a nearby fence.
The van was damaged, the driver was largely unharmed, but the elderly woman had fainted from the shock.
A young woman nearby, who seemed frantic and was muttering about the elderly woman having a heart condition and forgetting her medication, seemed to be the family’s nanny.
Heart disease.
Influenced by her mother’s profession, Jiang Shuyao instinctively pushed through the crowd, ran forward, and knelt down to assess the elderly woman’s condition—her pupils dilated, heartbeat weakened, carotid artery pulse absent.
As a child, her mother had taught her basic lifesaving skills. With these symptoms, immediate cardiac compression was necessary.
In her first year of high school, witnessing her mother resuscitate a drowning victim firsthand, she had learned the essentials of CPR, and she was skilled enough to perform it with her eyes closed.
Pei Yan arrived beside her and watched her perform a series of emergency procedures amidst the crisis, unable to hide his surprise and pride.
His princess had been raised in a greenhouse, yet when she showed courage, she was tougher than any man.
Soon, an ambulance arrived, and medical personnel descended with a stretcher, taking over the subsequent work. Jiang Shuyao watched as the elderly woman was carried away, and only then did her anxious heart slowly calm down.
Pei Yan patted her head, "Why so nervous? Life and death are predestined; you’ve done all you could."
"Just now, that auntie..." Jiang Shuyao murmured, "Have I seen her somewhere before?"
A flicker of memory crossed her mind—it seemed to be during the first term of her senior year, just before final exams, in Principal Lu’s office at Yunzhong Administrative Building.
The day was memorable because...
Here, under the Xinyuan building, as the nanny was leaving, she made a phone call, addressing the other party as Mr. Lu.
She could roughly guess the identity of the elderly woman.
Just as this thought arose, across the street, she saw Lu Chen, looking anxious, running out of the building.
Many times, it seemed as if fate had deliberately arranged it.
Jiang Shuyao and Pei Yan had never expected to see Lu Chen lose control under such circumstances.
At Huaren Hospital, the lights in the emergency room were on for a full three hours.
Lu’s mother had undergone a heart bypass surgery, and she had recovered relatively well within a year after the surgery.
However, according to the nanny, lately Lu’s mother would often wake up in panic in the middle of the night. Upon waking, she would repeatedly call out her son’s name, as if she were having a nightmare, or as if she was not feeling well, but she refused to go to the hospital for a check-up and did not allow them to call Lu Chen.
Mother and son are connected by heart; when news of the incident at Xinyuan was released, Lu’s mother saw it and became terribly anxious. She immediately asked the nanny to take her to find Lu Chen.
Thus, the scene that had just unfolded at the bottom of the building took place.
Sitting in the quiet corridor, Lu Chen was slumped over in his chair, the light above illuminating his black suit and casting an air of cold solitude.
She had received CPR while unconscious, and had been brought to the hospital in time and Director Zhu had personally taken charge—there shouldn’t be any serious problems.
Having experienced his godmother’s death, Jiang Shuyao could no longer bear to witness such life-and-death separations of this world. She tilted her head and tugged at Pei Yan’s hem, "Let’s go."
Her eyes were red, and she seemed a bit down.
Pei Yan held her hand as they walked to the elevator, sighing, "Princess, why is your heart so soft."
There was no hint of jealousy or blame in his tone. Unable to help herself, Shuyao hugged his arm tightly and softly said, "Tell me about that matter you didn’t get to finish talking about today."
Pei Yan knew what she was referring to.
"Let’s find a place nearby to sit, and later we can have lunch with godmother."
"Alright."
In the café, Pei Yan never thought he would recount the events of that night with such calm.
Jiang Shuyao listened silently. She experienced almost no fluctuation in emotions through the whole process except for slightly frowning when she heard about the five-year agreement.
There was something else she couldn’t understand.
Yuan Chong had hired someone to kidnap her and even sent her to Lu Chen’s bed—what exactly were his motives and purpose?
Even if he hated her godmother, he shouldn’t involve everyone related to her.
Kidnapping, drugging—the mixed-blood man was both sinister and perverse, and such a scumbag was still living a carefree life in the Capital.
That night, Pei Yan omitted many details, especially the call before Lin Zhen’s suicide—he didn’t mention a word about it.
With too much information to process, Jiang Shuyao strove to digest it all and figure out the whole story before she somewhat came to her senses.
"The day I went to the villa to find you, you lied to me saying that human traffickers had kidnapped me, and you didn’t tell me about Lu Chen. Were you afraid I would overthink?" She asked this sensitive question with a calm demeanor, appearing even more nonchalant than Pei Yan.
"Hmm," he nodded noncommittally, "What if you had become stubborn and wanted to break up with me, what would I have done?"
Seeing his seemingly scared and aggrieved appearance, Jiang Shuyao couldn’t help but smile.
Imagine, if Lu Chen had really done something to her that night, she definitely wouldn’t have been able to get over it and continue her relationship with Pei Yan.
His concern was not unreasonable, and she was also relieved that Lu Chen still had some conscience.
Back at the hospital, Lu’s mother had already been moved to the intensive care unit, and for the time being, there was no immediate danger to her life.
In the office, Zhu Yun was entering patient information while praising her daughter, "Yaoyao, you did very well today, mommy is proud of you."
Jiang Shuyao knew her mother was referring to performing CPR on Lu’s mother.
Feeling a bit embarrassed by the praise, her cheeks flushed, she leaned in closer and asked, "How is it, does our medical record system work well?"
