The Revival of Love Consultations

One lunchtime, we had gone to great lengths to create this opportunity.

Following the crepes, it was time for the ‘Lunch Operation.’ Otsuki-san and I had made lunch for our respective best friends, with the plan to cleverly get Reo to eat Otsuki-san’s lunch. We spread out a sheet in the courtyard outside the school building.

Most people eat in the cafeteria or their classrooms, so not many dine here, except for the occasional couple. There we were, four friends eating together on the sheet.

The collective attractiveness at this spot was off the charts. Asahina-san, known as the school’s most popular girl, and Reo, the most popular guy. Otsuki-san, while modest, had a cute appearance, and I, overflowing with ordinariness, felt somewhat out of place.

“Here you go.”

Otsuki-san’s lunchbox was a two-tiered jubako. It boasted a huge volume, likely for the hearty eater Asahina-san.

Upon opening the lid, it was like a treasure chest filled with various side dishes.

“Wow, isn’t Otsuki’s cooking practically professional level?”

“Eh~ not at all. I still have a long way to go.”

“Shizuku’s cooking is the best in Japan! It’s really delicious.”

But to think she could prepare this much in the morning.

Most of it must have been prepped the night before but even prepping takes time, and you’d have to really love cooking to do this. She might also dislike compromising. She seems to be serious about gardening too.

I handed over my modest lunchbox to Reo. I had simply made another one just like my own.

The main event was Otsuki-san’s lunch, so mine was just there in case. Of course, I was confident in its taste.

Now, if only I could arrange for Reo to eat Otsuki-san’s lunch…

“Sweet and spicy meatballs that even I, who can’t handle spicy food, can eat, wiener sausages that are well-flavored, spinach Hitachi, and a rich sauce katsu with cheese!”

Asahina-san started her food report and began eagerly consuming Otsuki-san’s lunch, rapidly depleting the dishes.

At this rate, there won’t be any left for Reo.

“Otsuki’s lunch looks delicious.”

“…Hirasawa-kun, do you want to try some? Hey, Alisa, lend me the jubako.”

“Eh…”

‘Eh’? That’s not the right response.

This person, did she forget our original purpose?

Reluctantly, Asahina-san handed the jubako to Otsuki-san. I thought Otsuki-san would pass it directly to Reo, but instead, she started rearranging the dishes and wiping off any mess with a napkin. Then, she took out a paper plate and new chopsticks and gently handed them to Reo.

She really is attentive… I can genuinely respect that. Otsuki-san then placed the jubako in front of Reo.

“Here you go.”

“Thank you. Well then, itadakimasu.”

Reo snapped the chopsticks apart and took a bite of the meatball. At that moment, his expression transformed into a beaming smile.

“This is so good! Not just the appearance, but the taste is top too!”

“Ah, thank you. It’s kind of embarrassing to be praised by a guy.”

Otsuki-san blushed with joy at being praised by Reo. I guess honest words convey genuine joy.

Reo continued to munch away at the lunch, his appetite evident. He’s a big guy with a big appetite, and since I corrected any pickiness when we were kids, he can enjoy any dish.

“I’m so envious of you, Asahina. You get to eat Otsuki’s cooking every day.”

“Right? Shizuku’s cooking is the best of the best.”

“Isn’t it tough cooking every day?”

“Well, I enjoy cooking, so not really. Making bento is kind of like a hobby for me.”

“I wish I could have some too.”

Reo muttered under his breath, causing Otsuki-san to blink in surprise.

“Hirasawa-kun, you eat at the cafeteria every day, right? Your parents are always working, aren’t they?”

“They’re abroad. I get living expenses sent to me, so I don’t have any particular money problem.”

“But you’ll end up with an unbalanced diet. How about I make you a bento then?”

“What? No, that would be too much trouble.”

“I usually make them quickly, and I’m already making them for Alisa and myself, so making for two or three people doesn’t make much difference. It’s fine.”

“If you’re willing to make one for me, that would be amazing… Ah, of course, I’ll pay for the bento.”

“You’re in a sports club, Hirasawa-kun. It’s better to eat something more proper food than just cafeteria food.”

“Shizuku has always been particular about food. She wants you to eat delicious food to your heart’s content.”

“Sounds like a grandmother.”

“Did you say something, Kogure-kun?”

“Nothing…”

I feelt Otsuki-san glaring at me, so I quickly turned my face away.

At that moment, Asahina-san suddenly stood up as if she had been waiting for something.

“I want to eat Kogure-kun’s bento too!”

“Huh?”

My bento?

The bento I brought was just for the sake of having this bento gathering, nothing fancy. I like cooking too, but I’m not that enthusiastic about making morning bentos.

Honestly, I’d rather sleep in late, and waking up early like Otsuki-san to do something is unthinkable. That’s why I often settle for the cafeteria for lunch like Reo.

“It’s nothing special compared to Otsuki-san’s bento.”

“That’s fine! That’s what I want.”

Lately, Asahina-san has been really confusing me. Well, no reason to refuse it if she wants some.

“This karaage is seriously amazing. Might be the best I’ve ever had!”

Reo continued to eat Otsuki-san’s bento with a beaming smile.

But the best karaage? Didn’t he say the karaage I made before was the best in the world?

Something felt annoying.

“Can I also have a piece of Otsuki-san’s bento?”

I picked a piece of karaage from the jubako and popped it into my mouth, savoring the flavor.

“Yes, it’s delicious. As expected.”

“Thank you.”

“But… if I may say, if it’s soy sauce-based, I think it would be better if you marinated it a bit longer. Well, that’s just my opinion.”

“…what?”

After giving my honest opinion as someone who cooks, Otsuki-san’s voice changed from the kind tone she had before to a much gruff one.
