Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 201: Jeff Jenkins and Ivy Jenkins Were Murdered
Joanne took out the packet of powder and held it tightly in her hand.
At that moment, many thoughts ran through her young mind.
Mason’s enticing words echoed in her ears, and she recalled what Aunt Hale had just said to her, as well as what Uncle Fitzwilliam said before Aunt Hale returned.
"Joanne, you’re a big girl now. You know what Aunt Hale being pregnant means for her. Once the baby is born, she will inevitably overlook you, but you have to remember, she loves you, and so do I. We may not always have the energy to take care of everything, but we will do our best to care for you and meet your needs."
Uncle Fitzwilliam also showed her the plans they had for her, including which middle school to attend, the primary skills to learn, when to send her abroad for further studies, and what career path to follow after returning, and so on.
For the first time, she realized how much effort both Aunt Hale and Uncle Fitzwilliam had invested in her.
In that case, so what if the birth of a brother or sister took away Aunt Hale’s attention?
After all, she was adopted. For them to give her so much, she felt truly grateful.
She was happy to have a brother or sister to share so much joy with her.
She trusted Aunt Hale and Uncle Fitzwilliam.
A determined look flashed across Joanne’s young face. She then walked out of the room, holding the packet of powder, and went into the bathroom.
After locking the door, she poured all the powder into the toilet and flushed it away.
She wouldn’t harm Aunt Hale.
After doing all that, Joanne went back to sleep peacefully.
The next day, Elara saw Rosalind walking hand-in-hand with a man while at a nearby mall as she was heading to work.
Seeing them from the car through the glass, she couldn’t make out what the man looked like, but she found it a bit curious and snapped a photo to send to Esther.
"Looks like you should be safe now."
Esther quickly replied with a head-scratching emoji, "I knew that little brat was putting on a show. She doesn’t love Owen at all, she just wanted to disgust me!"
Elara took the opportunity to ask, "Are things stable between you and Owen?"
It took a while before Esther replied, "I kicked him out."
Elara was momentarily stunned but responded, "Why? Wasn’t the misunderstanding resolved?"
This time, Esther sent a voice message. When Elara played it, she heard Esther’s indignant voice, "Did you know that bastard wanted to get me pregnant? Sleep together, fine, whatever, but he tried to sneak the condom off in the middle! Luckily, I caught him and gave him a beating, then the bastard confessed it was because he was afraid I’d leave, so he wanted to trap me with a child! It’s unbearable! Why should I keep such a scumbag around?!"
After the initial shock, Elara couldn’t help but laugh and replied, "Calm down, calm down."
It was clear that Esther was really upset this time.
She didn’t dare to ask more, cautiously wrapping up the conversation.
Despite everything, she felt Esther wouldn’t be able to break up with Owen for good.
Zion commented once she finished, "Owen is kind of pathetic."
Of course, he also felt a bit sorry for himself.
But he dared not say that.
He just suddenly felt a sense of camaraderie with Owen.
Elara glanced at him, shielding her friend, "Why feel sorry for Owen? If he wasn’t ready to marry someone he didn’t love, he shouldn’t have casually gotten engaged. Once he realized he liked Esther, he should have canceled the engagement and cleared things before getting involved with Esther. How is it any different than being the other woman? If it weren’t for him, Esther wouldn’t have been repeatedly put on the spot!"
She got angrier as she spoke, finally snapping, "Men can only empathize with men. You feel for Owen, so why not consider how hard it is on Esther? If she didn’t like Owen, do you think Owen would even have a chance with her? Finally, she falls for someone, and it turns out to be such a scheming dog. You think she’ll be fine with that?"
Although Esther had never said any of this, but after being friends for so many years, how could Elara not understand?
Zion didn’t expect that a casual remark could anger her, and he quickly pleaded, "I was just saying, what Owen did was indeed wrong, too scummy."
Elara snorted and said nothing more.
Zion pondered for a moment, "How about I find someone to trip Owen up a bit, teach him a lesson?"
"Don’t interfere." Elara frowned, "This is their issue, and Esther has her own judgment. I trust she can handle it."
Zion nodded, but couldn’t help emphasising, "I’m not like Owen. I’m clean, I’ve never had a girlfriend before, and I’ve always been true to you."
Elara was amused by his words, and fortunately, they had arrived at the company. She quickly grabbed her bag and got out of the car, unsure of what else to say.
In the afternoon, while Elara was working, she received a phone call.
"Hello, Miss Hale, we are staff from Astral Avenue District, Northgarde Prison. Do you know Cecilia Quincy?"
Elara paused, moved the mouse aside, and asked, "I do. What’s going on?"
Various thoughts ran through her mind—did Cecilia break out of prison?
The caller replied, "Here’s the situation: Cecilia Quincy is scheduled to be executed tomorrow. She has made a request to our prison, hoping to meet you before the execution."
Elara was momentarily stunned, "Why would she want to see me?"
She really didn’t feel there was any unfinished business between her and Cecilia Quincy.
The officer said, "We are also unsure of her intent, but this is her last wish, and our prison contacted you out of humanitarian concern. If you are unwilling, you can decline directly."
Elara hesitated briefly and said, "Thank you, but I won’t be going."
"Alright." The officer concluded and hung up.
Elara originally thought that would be the end of it, but nearing the end of her shift, she received another call from the officer sounding somewhat troubled, "My apologies for disturbing you again, Miss Hale. Cecilia Quincy has shown self-harming behavior, and since her execution is scheduled for tomorrow, we can’t ignore it."
He explained, hoping to persuade Elara to visit.
Not wanting to cause difficulty for the staff, she hesitated but finally agreed, "Okay, I will come."
She called Zion and explained the situation.
Zion didn’t try to stop her, merely saying, "I’ll accompany you."
Elara felt relieved, "Alright."
After work, Zion came to pick her up.
Once in the car, Elara couldn’t help but wonder, "I don’t know why she wants to see me. Even if she wished to see a friend before the end, it wouldn’t be me, right?"
Zion rested his hand on the steering wheel, smiling, "You’ll find out when you get there."
He had some theories of his own.
Cecilia had been deeply in love with Mason. In the end, Mason sent her to prison, breaking all his promises. Cecilia should hate Mason with a passion.
Perhaps, she wants to see Mason dead.
Soon they arrived at the prison.
Zion Fitzwilliam explained his purpose to the prison staff, and soon a guard came to escort them inside. As they walked, the guard apologized, "It’s really troubling you to come all the way here. Mainly, our prison has regulations to ensure humane management, so... Anyway, we’re sorry for the inconvenience."
Elara Hale smiled and said, "It’s alright, we’re cooperating with your work and won’t cause trouble for the country."
The guard chuckled, "Miss Hale, you’re quite insightful."
The guard led them to the visitation area and asked Elara and Zion to wait for a moment before arranging for Cecilia Quincy to come out.
After a short while, Cecilia Quincy appeared behind the glass, shackled.
Her appearance had changed a lot. Her slightly wavy long hair, previously always down, was now cut into ear-length short hair. Her face was makeup-free, looking uneven and rough, and her nose seemed to be crooked for some reason.
She was wearing prison clothes, and if the guard hadn’t confirmed it, Elara would have had a hard time believing this was Cecilia Quincy.
She looked worn out like a woman in her forties.
Cecilia sat down on the other side of the glass.
Elara Hale stared at her for a moment through the glass, then picked up the phone.
Cecilia also picked up the phone, and Elara heard her chuckling with a voice full of weariness, "Elara Hale, I lost to you, completely defeated."
Elara replied flatly, "I’ve never competed with you on anything."
"Hahaha, that’s exactly what’s so pathetic about me!" Cecilia laughed with tears, her weary face full of sorrow, "You never saw me as a rival, yet I lost to you."
Elara furrowed her brows, "Did you call me here just to say this?"
Cecilia wiped her tears, "No, I’m just lamenting. My life has been extremely ridiculous."
"I thought Mason really loved me, and I genuinely loved him too. I tried so hard, but he never considered me as his wife. Isn’t that sad? Even though he cheated during the marriage and divorced you, in his mind, I’m still not as good as you." Cecilia stared intently at Elara, then gave a bitter smile, "I’ve come to realize my current situation is self-inflicted, and it’s also due to Mason."
Elara was unsure of her point, even uncertain of the significance of what she was saying.
Was it just to vent about how unreliable Mason was?
Cecilia laughed softly, her eyes showing a hint of madness, "He’s hurt me like this, and I’m about to die. Why can he still live well? He doesn’t deserve it; he should go to hell and accompany me!"
Suddenly, she raised her head, staring at Elara fiercely, "I’ll tell you a secret."
Elara was taken aback, then heard her say, "Remember the siblings Jeff Jenkins and Ivy Jenkins?"
Elara thought for a moment before recalling.
Ivy Jenkins was the finance director at her company, sent to prison due to tax evasion and bribery issues.
She then mysteriously died in prison.
And Jeff was Ivy Jenkins’ brother.
Cecilia looked at her, saying, "They were killed by Mason."
Elara was stunned, unable to immediately process what Cecilia said.
Mason killed Jeff and Ivy Jenkins? This is a society governed by law; how could he kill two people and still remain unscathed?
Moreover, Ivy Jenkins died while still in prison; how did he do it?
Elara thought Cecilia was teasing her, but seeing the look on her face made Elara pause.
"You’re not... joking with me?"
Cecilia said, "Why would I lie to you? I’m about to die, and before I do I have only one wish, and that’s for Mason not to end well! Elara Hale, help me. You hate Mason deeply; help me make sure he loses everything!"
Elara didn’t know how to respond.
In her mind, Mason and being a murderer could never be equated. Thinking of all the help he’s offered her, she felt confused.
Could Cecilia really not be deceiving her?
Suddenly, a hand was extended beside her, gripping hers in a dry yet warm touch that strangely calmed Elara a bit.
Zion Fitzwilliam said in a deep voice, "Give me the phone."
Elara obediently handed the phone to him.
She heard Zion ask, "Do you have evidence? If you do, I can help make your wish come true."
She didn’t know what Cecilia said, but Zion showed a thoughtful expression and after a moment said, "I’ll investigate."
Then he hung up the phone.
Elara curiously asked, "What did she say?"
Zion looked at her without hiding the truth, "She said Mason killed Ivy Jenkins using a police informant whose last name is Bi. Jeff Jenkins was shot dead by him, and he buried the gun in an unknown place; Cecilia saw him wiping blood off the gun."
Overall, these clues don’t seem very valuable. Mason killing Jeff and Ivy was something he suspected long ago.
The police informant and the buried gun are going to be difficult to find.
It might take a bit of effort and might not even be found.
Elara was incredulous after hearing Zion’s words, "So, Mason really committed murder? It feels too bizarre."
Killing someone isn’t something just anybody does; typically, fugitives on the run commit such deeds.
Zion nodded, "Yes, he’s killed more than one person."
He wanted to say more but held back; after a while, he swallowed it back down.
Some things too cruel should not be known to her just yet; she couldn’t handle it.
The two left the prison, silent all the way.
Zion looked at her several times, seeing her blankly staring out the window, and eventually he couldn’t hold back and asked, "If evidence of Mason’s murders is really found, do you wish for him to go to jail?"
Elara was taken aback, then responded matter-of-factly, "Of course, murder should be punished with death; no one is exempt."
Zion observed her expression and seeing she didn’t appear upset, he finally relaxed.
"Evil will meet evil in the end."
After saying this, Zion stopped speaking and focused on driving.
Elara began to drift off.
Evil, is Mason considered evil?
When her parents were in a car accident, she was nearly driven to despair. Without Mason’s help, she wasn’t sure she could’ve pulled through.
Could someone like him really be a cruel, bloodthirsty murderer?
Elara didn’t know; she felt bewildered, unable to tell truth from lies.
