Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 207: Drop-Dead Gorgeous
Zion Fitzwilliam agreed without any hesitation, "Okay."
Elara Hale finally felt relieved.
Perhaps it was due to the pregnancy or the exhaustion from the past few days, but on the way back, Elara slept the whole journey. When the plane landed, Zion Fitzwilliam gently woke her, "Elara, wake up."
Elara opened her eyes and saw the dark sky outside, with the lights of Northgarde Airport shining in the distance. The night was already deep.
She sat up in embarrassment, not expecting to sleep for so long.
Zion Fitzwilliam naturally reached over to press her shoulder. Before Elara could refuse, he was already explaining, "During pregnancy, your body releases oxytocin and relaxin, loosening your bones. A little massage might feel comfortable."
Elara glanced down at her still flat belly a bit speechlessly, thinking that the twins inside were only the size of a pea, yet he spoke as if she was already in the delivery room.
Fortunately, he only kneaded for a moment before releasing his hand, and the flight attendant came over to see off the first-class passengers.
Once out of the airport, Elara checked her phone. It was already past ten o’clock, and by the time she got home, it was almost midnight.
Maybe because she slept too long, she didn’t feel sleepy at all, so she took a shower and sat on the sofa, browsing through work emails and messages that had accumulated over the past couple of days.
Unexpectedly, Zion Fitzwilliam didn’t head to bed either. He sat on the sofa next to her, seemingly working on his laptop, but on closer inspection, his attention wasn’t truly on the work in front of him.
After a while, he began organizing all his assets, including companies where he was the legal representative and those where he held actual shares.
No matter what, abandoning Elara Hale was not an option for him. Since she wouldn’t come to him, he had no choice but to go to her.
If he put in enough effort, he might have a chance to host a wedding in this lifetime and gain proper recognition.
The living room grew silent for a while. After finishing her work, Elara looked up and saw Zion Fitzwilliam was still there. She asked, "Aren’t you going to sleep?"
Zion Fitzwilliam smiled, about to speak, when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at it and said to Elara Hale, "Felix Ford is calling. I’ll take this first."
He put down his laptop, picked up the call, and heard Felix Ford’s tipsy voice, "Fitzwilliam, are you busy? Want to go out for some drinks?"
Zion Fitzwilliam was concerned about leaving Elara Hale alone at home in the middle of the night, so he responded, "Not tonight, let’s do it tomorrow instead."
Felix Ford replied, "Are you reluctant to leave your girlfriend? I can smell the stench of romance through the internet."
Zion Fitzwilliam frowned, "How much have you had to drink?"
Felix Ford fell silent for a moment, as if counting the bottles. After a while, he said, "Three cases of beer."
Zion Fitzwilliam’s expression changed, "Where are you?"
Three cases of beer, despite the low alcohol content, are no joke. Felix Ford’s drinking limit was already a challenge to maintain clarity.
He feared Felix Ford might suffer from alcohol poisoning.
Felix Ford reported his location, and Zion Fitzwilliam immediately hung up the phone and called Brandon White, who answered grumpily being disturbed late at night, "Fitzwilliam, you really know how to torture people!"
Zion Fitzwilliam ignored his complaint, "Felix Ford overdrank, go check on him. If things look bad, send him to the hospital; he drank three cases of beer."
Brandon White exclaimed, "What? That guy hits his limit after two bottles of beer, where does he get the audacity for three cases!"
Zion Fitzwilliam suggested, "He probably encountered something serious. Just go check it out."
He conveyed Felix Ford’s location, and Brandon White agreed before hanging up.
Elara Hale listened to the whole conversation and asked, "Aren’t you going to check on him?"
"Having Brandon White there is sufficient." Zion Fitzwilliam smiled without explaining further, "Want some late-night snacks?"
She had been asleep from afternoon till evening and hadn’t eaten anything; he worried she might be hungry.
Elara Hale didn’t feel hungry, so she shook her head, "I won’t eat, but you can go ahead."
She stood up and returned to her bedroom, leaving Zion Fitzwilliam uninterested in eating alone, so he soon followed her inside.
Half an hour later, Brandon White called back, "Don’t worry, he’s at the hospital now, getting his stomach pumped. The doctors said it was mild alcohol poisoning; apparently, he vomited quite a bit."
Zion Fitzwilliam felt relieved and asked, "Do you know the reason?"
Brandon White sneered, "What else could it be? Chloe Doyle pressured him to marry her. But Felix Ford’s older brother just passed away less than two months ago. If he marries Chloe Doyle now, his grandfather would break his legs."
Zion Fitzwilliam frowned, "Did Chloe Doyle abandon him because he didn’t agree?"
This was a reasonable guess based on his understanding of Chloe Doyle.
Brandon White replied with a chuckle, "Not exactly, Chloe Doyle probably said something harsh, hurting Felix Ford, and he overdrank impulsively."
Zion Fitzwilliam didn’t know what to say and only sighed quietly for his friend, reminding Brandon White to take good care of Felix Ford before ending the call.
Hospital.
Felix Ford had already become sober, and Brandon White, still irate, cursed him a few times. Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps came from outside the ward, and Chloe Doyle pushed the door open, entering quickly, panting.
Seeing Felix Ford lying on the hospital bed, she was overwhelmed with concern. She rushed over to hug him and choked, "Why did you drink so much? Don’t you know people worry about you? You take such little care of your own health - how will we have a future together?"
Felix Ford couldn’t bear to see her cry. He hastily consoled her, "I’m fine, really. I won’t drink anymore, never again. Please don’t cry."
Brandon White, observing this scene, was about to leave when Chloe Doyle suddenly looked up at him, expressing gratitude, "Attorney White, thank you so much for today. Felix Ford’s lack of self-control was a trouble to you."
Brandon White quickly waved his hand, "It’s nothing. We’re brothers, it’s what I should do."
Chloe Doyle apologized, "How about this, I’ll host tomorrow and invite you all for dinner? I’ll invite Mr. Fitzwilliam and his wife too as a thank you for taking care of Felix Ford. Does tomorrow night work?"
Brandon White scratched his head, "Well, um, I’m free anyway, I’m up for it. Let me check with Fitzwilliam and his wife afterward."
Chloe Doyle smiled and said, "Alright."
Early the next day, Zion Fitzwilliam received a call from Felix Ford.
"Tonight?" Zion Fitzwilliam frowned, "I can’t make it tonight. Why don’t you guys meet without me?"
Felix Ford said, "Chloe specifically mentioned she wants you and your wife to join. I guess she wants to strengthen ties with you. If you can’t make it tonight, how about tomorrow night?"
Zion Fitzwilliam just saw Elara Hale coming out of the restroom, and after repeating Felix Ford’s words, she hesitated for a moment but agreed.
Zion Fitzwilliam replied to Felix Ford, "Tomorrow night works."
Felix Ford breathed a sigh of relief, responded, and hung up.
After breakfast, Zion Fitzwilliam routinely offered to drive Elara Hale to work. Elara Hale wanted to decline, but Zion Fitzwilliam said, "The child you’re carrying is partly mine, so it’s my duty to care for you. Once the child is born, I won’t do this anymore."
Elara Hale couldn’t argue with him and let him drive her.
Upon reaching the company, Vera Ford immediately came over and whispered, "Jean Dunn still hasn’t shown up today."
Elara Hale paused, looked up, and indeed saw Jean Dunn’s desk was tidy.
Vera Ford continued, "She might really be planning to quit. What should be done? If you hadn’t discovered her boyfriend’s cheating, it would be alright. But now that he’s cheated on her, and she’s pregnant, deeply in love, might she do something foolish?"
Elara Hale didn’t know either. Out of friendship, they should warn Jean Dunn, but thinking about Jean Dunn’s devotion to Connor made Elara Hale worry.
"Let’s see tonight." Elara Hale could only say this.
Vera Ford sighed, "I suggested having a meal together; she didn’t refuse that - yet she just doesn’t come to work anymore. Her leave request ends today, and you can’t fake more leave for her."
Elara Hale was troubled too. The leave isn’t a problem, but missing work for six consecutive days without a valid reason is hard to justify.
Even though the company offers maternity benefits, Jean Dunn herself must apply for them; Elara Hale can’t do it for her.
"Let’s extend her leave by another day," Elara Hale gritted her teeth. "Tell her tonight - if she really won’t come, then so be it."
Vera Ford nodded, "There’s no other option."
Both of them distractedly passed the day until it was time to leave. Elara Hale received a call from Zion Fitzwilliam saying he was already waiting downstairs.
Vera Ford saw this and quickly came over, "Elara, may I hitch a ride with your husband? My husband says the hotel is nearby, so he’ll go straight there and told me to take a taxi."
How could taking a taxi compare to hitching a ride? The money saved could be better spent elsewhere.
Elara Hale hesitated; Zion Fitzwilliam’s car...
Vera Ford saw her hesitance, thought she was unwilling, but Elara Hale then nodded, "Sure, let’s go together."
Vera Ford didn’t say anything else, silently thinking she should be more mindful about boundaries in the future, not to bother others.
When she arrived downstairs, seeing the luxuriously imposing Rolls-Royce, she instantly understood why Elara Hale hesitated earlier.
"This this this..."
Vera Ford swallowed her disbelief, "Elara, didn’t you say your second husband sells insurance? How could he drive such a luxury car?"
Elara Hale was unsure how to explain, "It’s a long story, anyway, he’s not in insurance."
Vera Ford gave her a thumbs up, "No wonder you weren’t interested in someone like President Jacobs - you have better. This cunning woman, secretly living so well."
She lamented, "Too bad I’ve married young. Otherwise, I’d surely ask your husband to introduce me to some rich and handsome men."
Elara Hale couldn’t help but laugh, "If you’re serious, you could ditch your husband."
Vera Ford waved, "Better not. A husband made in difficult times shouldn’t be abandoned. My husband, though poor, is considerate, and I’m fine with that."
The two got in the car. Zion Fitzwilliam sat in the driver’s seat and turned to greet Vera Ford, "Hello."
Vera Ford couldn’t help but clutch Elara Hale’s arm - this shrewd woman really lives well!
It’s one thing to be rich, but so young too, and if young, so attractive! Handsome beyond measure!
