Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The True Magical Treasure

"Job done and dusted!"

The Five Thunders Order and the Thunder Seed divided the massive amount of Evil Qi between them. Gu Zhao and Taoist Yan Song knew Xu Kongting was dead.

"Doing Good Deeds and Accumulating Virtue, Eradicating Evil and Accumulating Merit... So there really are benefits to slaying demons and exorcising evil!" Taoist Yan Song said with a sigh of admiration as he put away his face mask.

Just from killing one fairy and one ghost, the Thunder Seed had already harvested a large amount of Evil Qi. Although its release was slow and would take time to digest, Taoist Yan Song calculated that the gains from this single battle were worth at least several months of his own arduous Cultivation.

Gu Zhao’s gains were, of course, even greater!

Taoist Yan Song looked at Gu Zhao and said, a little sourly, "It seems you’ll surpass me very soon."

In terms of sheer Magical Power, Taoist Yan Song was superior to Gu Zhao. After all, the old Daoist had been in Cultivation for over fifty years and had more than two hundred years of Dao Practice. In a place like Xiuyue County, he was a figure who could hold his own and dominate the region.

Not to mention, after his Innate Qi was activated by the Thunder Seed and he arrived in this world abundant with Spiritual Qi, his Cultivation speed had become even faster. His Inner Breath True Qi was growing at a visible rate, and with the aid of the Thunder Seed, his future potential was limitless.

But even so, Taoist Yan Song knew he couldn’t compare to Gu Zhao.

To be recognized and empowered by the Five Thunders Order meant that Gu Zhao’s temperament, talent, and aptitude were all top-tier. Furthermore, the Five Thunders Order was far more potent than the Thunder Seed. As long as he didn’t get bogged down in trivialities and held fast to his original Dao Heart, his growth would only accelerate.

Gu Zhao smiled faintly. "Then you’ll have to work harder, Uncle."

Taoist Yan Song’s face twitched.

"Alright, alright, time to loot the body!" Gu Zhao said, rubbing his hands together and changing the subject.

Bai Ke leaped from the Silk Embroideress’s shoulder, landing by the dry well under the old locust tree. "So he’s been hiding his body in the well this whole time."

Taoist Yan Song, who knew Feng Shui, commented, "The old locust tree is Wood, the ancestral hall’s legacy is Fire, the well below is Earth and Water, and his own corpse represents Metal. That covers all Five Elements. It’s a good spot."

Gu Zhao peeked into the well. The opening wasn’t wide, and the bottom was pitch-black. He couldn’t help but turn to look at Bai Ke.

Bai Ke shivered, the fur on her tail standing on end. "It looks disgusting in there! I’m not going down!"

Gu Zhao held up one finger. Bai Ke shook her head.

Gu Zhao held up a second finger. Bai Ke licked her lips, but still shook her head.

Gu Zhao finally held up a third finger and said coolly, "Three at most. Otherwise, I’ll have the Silk Embroideress go down."

"Three five-spice roast chickens! It’s a deal!"

Bai Ke hopped onto the well’s edge, stretched her limbs, and focused her Demon Qi into her eyes, which began to glow with a green light. Then, she scurried down the side and vanished from sight in a flash.

Taoist Yan Song stroked his beard and smiled. ’If you ignored her fox form and only heard her voice, you’d think she was a haughty young girl from next door.’

The Silk Embroideress had just glanced worriedly at the well opening when a white shadow shot back up, its Demon Power coalescing behind it to carry a small bundle.

As soon as she was up, Bai Ke dispersed her Demon Power and shook open the small bundle, her voice filled with disbelief. "This old ghost was actually a member of the Spirit Court!"

CLATTER—

The bundle hit the ground, scattering a few items. Bai Ke used her Demon Power to flick one of them, a cyan-green Jade Token, into Gu Zhao’s hand.

The Jade Token was about half the size of a palm and oval-shaped. The quality of the jade itself was ordinary, but the entire object radiated a profound and mysterious aura. However, this aura clung only to the surface of the Jade Token; if one wasn’t holding it, it couldn’t be sensed at all.

Gu Zhao examined the Jade Token. The front was carved with a crescent moon. Above the moon was the character for ’Spirit,’ and below it was the character for ’Law.’ The back featured an incomprehensible pattern, beneath which was the holder’s name: Xu Kongting.

"Isn’t the Spirit Court a force of the Imperial Court?" Gu Zhao asked.

Bai Ke replied as if it were obvious, "The Spirit Court is, of course, a force of the Imperial Court. But who ever told you there were no bad people in the Court?"

Taoist Yan Song frowned. "But he shouldn’t be brazenly slaughtering entire villages, at the very least."

"He probably betrayed the Spirit Court," Bai Ke said, leaping onto the Silk Embroideress’s shoulder. She licked her paws, then pointed to a book that had fallen out of the bundle.

The Silk Embroideress took a step forward, picked up the book, dusted it off, and handed it to Gu Zhao with both hands.

Gu Zhao took it and saw five large words written on the cover: Red Slaughter Corpse Refining Skill.

Flipping through a couple of pages, Gu Zhao was speechless. "Refining yourself into a Red Corpse Fiend? What kind of damned Cultivation Technique is this?"

"He was seeking longevity," Bai Ke said. "Ordinary Mages only have a lifespan of a hundred years. But if you refine yourself into a Corpse Ghost and condense your Divine Soul, even if your Cultivation isn’t that deep, you could easily live for several hundred years, even if it’s not true immortality." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

In this world, lifespan was closely related to Dao Practice. The higher one’s Dao Practice, the longer one’s life.

However, for the same level of Dao Practice, different beings had different lifespans. Ghost Gods lived the longest, followed by Demon Spirit Monarchs, and finally, ordinary human Mages.

If a Mage did not form a Harmony with a ghost or a fairy, they would still only have a hundred-year lifespan unless their Dao Practice exceeded five hundred years.

The Silk Embroideress was confused. "But wasn’t he from the Spirit Court? If he wanted longevity, couldn’t he just form a Harmony with a Spirit Monarch?"

Bai Ke flicked her tail and guessed, "Perhaps there wasn’t a Spirit Monarch whose Divine Soul was compatible with his."

The group chatted casually as they looked through Xu Kongting’s other belongings.

Besides the Spirit Court identification Jade Token and the "Red Slaughter Corpse Refining Skill" manual, there were also some scattered gold and silver jewelry, a Jade Flute, and a fan made from cyan bird feathers.

"Huh? These two should be Magical Treasures, right? Why didn’t he use them just now?" The Silk Embroideress could feel that the Jade Flute and the feather fan were special.

"He switched to cultivating the Red Slaughter Corpse Refining Skill, so he probably couldn’t use them anymore," Taoist Yan Song speculated. "Besides, his Corpse Ghost Body was already equivalent to a powerful Magical Treasure."

"This Dongxiao can stir the spirit; it must be activated with Divine Sense," Bai Ke added. "That feather fan was likely made from the tail feathers of a bird fairy, so it’s best activated with Demon Power. If powered by Ghost Qi, its might would be somewhat weaker."

The Silk Embroideress nodded in understanding. "I see."

Taoist Yan Song took the Dongxiao and the feather fan, unable to put them down. Compared to these two highly refined Magical Artifacts, the Jade Ruyi he had cobbled together on Qingcheng Mountain was like a child’s toy.

He had previously studied the Gold And Silver Bracelets and the Great Saber that Gu Zhao had seized from the Golden Wind Sect’s Guardian. Those two Magical Artifacts were clearly of the ghost attribute, exuding a bone-chilling air.

However, the saber and bracelets were similar to Bai Ke’s Celestial Fox Nails—they were merely forged from special materials and imbued with Demon Power and Yin Qi, allowing them to be controlled or to enhance the power of Magic. They weren’t considered Magical Treasures in the strictest sense.

But this Dongxiao and feather fan were different.

Taoist Yan Song tried them out. By channeling his Divine Sense, the Jade Flute could stir a person’s spiritual fluctuations. By infusing Magical Power, the Cyan Feather Fan could create gusts of wind as sharp as blades.

Probing them again with his Divine Thought, he could sense Spiritual Power circulating within the Magical Artifacts when Magic was cast. They must have a special Rune structure that allowed them to automatically execute these two spells.

"Now *these* are true Magical Treasures!" Taoist Yan Song exclaimed.
