Chapter 102: Leaving The Well Water

Ash welcomed me back to the table with an attempt at a full-on-the-lips kiss. I turned my head at the last minute. I ended up with slobber on my cheek instead, but Ash didn’t seem to care. I probably wasn’t the only one who had ever attempted to avoid his advances.

I let everyone return to the routine of drinking, telling stories, and wandering off in pairs to dance. It was close to the end of the evening when I tried again.

"Ash, are you sure you can’t introduce me to your boss? I have a good job. I can pay the money back."

"Why put yourself in debt when you’ve got a good-looking man like me willing to take care of you if you’ll take care of me?"

I would never consider Ash good-looking. Not ugly, true. Maybe plain, forgettable, a face in the crowd.

"I know, and I love that you want to take care of me, but after that asshole ex, I’d feel better with some pocket money, you know, just in case."

Ash pulled a card out of his wallet. "I tell you what, you hang on to this." He slid the card into my halter top. "And if you get spooked, you use it but don’t say I didn’t warn you. You get sucked into doing business with Mrs. H, there ain’t no going back. She’ll suck you dry until there’s nothing left but bone dust.

"On the upside, it will be a great excuse to see me on a regular basis!"

"Aw, you are such a sweetie," I said. "What lucky star should I thank for introducing me to you? I was for sure when Jake dumped me, I’d spend the night crying in my drink. Instead, you’ve turned my entire night around."

"That’s me. I make all the girls feel better. Let’s get out of here, and I’ll make you feel even better."

I suspected the fact he paid the bar tab had more to do with why the girls liked him than anything else, but I wasn’t willing to test that theory.

As we walked through the bar to the exit, I scanned the crowd for familiar faces. I didn’t spot Jake, but I had faith that he had my back. I spotted Roscoe and Min. They had eyes on me, so even if something happened to Jake, I was covered, which was important. There was no way I was going anywhere with Ash.

As it were, I couldn’t wait to return to Alec’s place and take a long, hot shower. I tried the remember if there was a loofa in the bathroom. If not, I might have to buy one first. I needed to take off at least one layer of skin before the sense of revulsion would pass.

Jake was waiting for us as we exited the building. He walked right up to me.

"Tee, let’s go."

"Why would I go anywhere with you? You dumped me."

Jake put an arm around my shoulders and tried to lead me away, but I knew I couldn’t make it too easy. I might need to use my dumped girlfriend persona with Ash again. I balked.

Jake said, "Baby, I love you. I didn’t mean it. You pushed my buttons. That’s all."

Ash grabbed my wrist and stopped Jake from dragging me away. "Hey, Tee’s with me now. Leave her alone."

"Hey, bud, Tee’s my woman. Don’t get in the middle of something that doesn’t concern you."

Ash looked around at his entourage and back at Jake as if trying to summon support for standing up to my pretend ex-boyfriend. Whatever silent signal he got from his buddies gave him the courage to step up to Jake.

"This does concern me. I bought Tee drinks all night. You’re not going to take her home and benefit from the foreplay I’ve doled out all night."

That was foreplay?

Jake said, "Listen, Tee and I’ve been together for over a year now. I let her cool off in your company, but that doesn’t change the fact she’s mine, so let go of her wrist, or you’ll end this night in the emergency room."

Ash chuckled. "You think you’re hot shit. You’re going to take on all three of us." He looked to his buddies for backup.

They looked less than interested, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t jump on the bandwagon if they thought it was to their advantage. After all, Ash paid for their night out, too.

Jake grabbed Ash’s wrist and squeezed. He continued to squeeze until Ash dropped his grip on me. As soon as Ash broke contact, Jake pulled me to stand behind him.

Ash cursed and held his sore wrist. "Damn it, man, I think you broke my wrist. What are you? The Hulk in disguise."

Jake gave him an evil grin. "Want to see what happens when you make me angry?"

Ash said, "Boys! Get him."

Only his buddies had their own problems. Min and Alec had them in standing armlocks. I hadn’t even heard them approach, never mind hearing them incapacitate Ash’s buddies.

It took Ash a ten count before he took the attention off his injury enough to discover why his friends had not intervened on his behalf.

"Whoa," Ash said. "You brought backup. Is this piece of ass worth that much to you? She’s been all over me all night. Already agreed to move in with me. How is she worth all that drama?"

Jake smiled, "My woman is worth all kinds of drama, boy. You’ve got no idea how good her loving is, and you’re not going to find out either. Do you feel me?"

That’s when Roscoe and another guard step up behind Ash, close enough to bump him.

Roscoe gave Ash the death glare. "You gotta a problem with that?"

Ash may have been inebriated, stupid, and in pain, but he still had enough wits about him to count heads. We had more heads on our side than he did, and I was willing to bet my team was better equipped for a fight than he was.

Ash turned his head and spit on the sidewalk. "No. I got no problem."

Min and Alec let go of their prey with a shove that had them stumbling toward Ash. The girls were smarter than the men. They stayed out of it. One had her phone out, taking footage of the incident.

"Min, she’s filming it," I pointed out.

Min didn’t take two steps before the woman started backing up.

"I’m deleting it. I’m deleting it. You don’t need to come over here."

She held up her phone to show she was deleting the content.

Smart girl.

By now, we’d gathered a crowd. I had no doubt others were filming as well, but we couldn’t stop them all. Ben showed up with a six-pack of club security personnel who started making the rounds in the crowd to do as much damage control as they could.

I sent a group text to Stiff and CK to give them a heads-up about the drama. They would scrub the internet to catch whatever security didn’t.

It was good to surround myself with such talented friends.

Jake said to Ash and his friends, "You should go now."

"Yeah, man, we’re going. We’re going."

Ben took his phone out and snapped a picture of the group. "And don’t come back. Your money isn’t good here anymore."

Ash said, "You can’t do that. This is a public nightclub. I got rights."

Ben laughed at him. "I tell you what. You come back any night you want and test that theory. My security team hasn’t had a chance to throw anyone out in a long time."

"You act like you’re the owner instead of some piss-ant college kid."

"Who said a piss-ant college kid can’t own a bar? Call the cops if you feel lucky, but I’ve got footage of your activities tonight. Or would you rather I relieve you of all the cash you’ve got stowed in your jacket first? Let’s call it a citizen’s arrest and confiscation. I’ll take my chances with the cops if you will."

"My boss will make you pay for this."

"Let your boss try."

Ash said to Jake, "And I’m suing you for personal injury."

Jake waved Ash off as he led me away from the crowd. "Have your attorney call mine."

I was in a hurry to get to the van so I could check on the business card Ash had left with me. I highly doubted it would spell out who Ash’s boss was, but I would be one step closer.

Jake helped me into the back before taking his place in the driver’s seat. "Are you alright?"

"Yes I’m fine. Can I borrow your phone?"

I used the flashlight on Jake’s phone to take a good look at the business card.

The business name on the card was Mayday Loans and Financial Services. Maylean. Mayday. What were the odds they weren’t related? I so wanted to call the number on the card right then, but I knew I’d be better off doing some research first. I had a reputation for putting one and one together to make a solid two. I should apply my skills first.

"The church, Jake."

"For your laptop?"

"How did you know?"

"It’s in the back. I’ll take you back to Alec’s."
