Wife's Bitter Revenge Against Neglectful CEO Husband-Chapter 145: Departing Bright Future
Alec
I was about to open the door when it swung open and in walked Sampson with a baseball bat and a bad attitude.
I took a baton whack to the back that knocked me into Sampson’s arms. The man dwarfed me. Sampson twisted with me in the arms and took the next strike meant for me before pushing me to the side and rushing into the fray with the bat raised, but I wasn’t done with these guys yet. I still had some frustration to work off, not the least of which was about the hell Teela was going to raise when she saw my back after the baton strike.
I grabbed the guy nearest me and went to town on him while Sampson took care of the other two guards. We left them alive, but they would regret having ever met us.
"Let’s go," Sampson said.
"We can help the others."
"No can do. My orders are to take you to safety."
"But what about Colby and the other children?"
"You dad’s men have the dorm covered. Min and Jake were leaving with Colby as I came in."
Good enough.
The administrative office floor was a madhouse of people destroying computer equipment and shredding paperwork, but it was too late. I knew Teela would have secured a copy of all the evidence she needed before ever letting Jake near the place.
We left them to it. I headed to the stairs for an exit, but Sampson stopped me. "Not with that foot. Elevator or I carry you. Your choice."
I headed to the elevator. After what Teela had told me he could do, I wasn’t about to mess with Sampson.
The elevator stopped on every floor, but one look at Sampson and the people looking to join us changed their minds until the ground level. There, we were met by a team of security personnel who looked like they’d been waiting for us.
In the background, a riot of activity took place. Medical staff, visitors, and patients who were able to leave were rushing the crowded exits. Meanwhile, men in black, who I took as my dad’s men, fought to subdue security guards and a handful of men in suits. Men and women jackets with FBI emblazoned on the back were handcuffing people and lining them up against the wall. I saw Kahlil there next to a crying woman with a swollen belly. Amber, I assumed.
I’d tried to protect Kahlil and his family. I would still protect them if I could. But Kahlil was so damn stubborn, and his father had more resources than I did. I suspected Kahlil would be deported before he ever spent a minute behind bars. I wasn’t so sure Ember would be as lucky, and what about their sons?
First, though, Sampson and I had to get off the elevator, and it didn’t look like these guys planned to cooperate.
Sampson looked at me. "Ready?"
"All day every day."
I knew as soon as my dad’s men spotted me, we would have more help than we needed, but in the meantime, I’d be able to put my skills to work for real.
It was one thing to practice and to spar with willing participants who shared the same rules and training. It was another to enter into a free-for-all, and that was what this was.
I dodged one fist only to have another one come at me from the left. It landed with a jaw crunching slam that left me reeling. Teela was going to be so pissed at me. I bet she expected me to scurry to the back of the elevator and let Sampson soak up all the damage, but that wasn’t me, and from what I’d seen, that wasn’t Teela either.
I’d have to let her win at least a couple of bouts on the mats to work out her fury against me. I had no double she knew I let her win, but it made her feel better, and later, we would make love and move on from whatever I did to piss her off.
Yeah, it was a violent way of resolving couple’s issues, but it worked for us, and we used it sparingly when all other options didn’t quite cut it, like talking, flowers, and apologies. Besides, I enjoyed doing anything physical with the woman, even when she was trying to knock my head off.
Slightly dazed, I turned to return some punishment to the man who struck me when Jake grabbed my arm and pulled me away. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Min fly into the mix his fists and feet moving even as he was still regaining his footing. He dodged blows and delivered them in one continuous movement that left me in awe.
Jake kept jerking at me as I was frozen in place.
"Dammit, Alec, if you don’t walk, I’ll carry you out," Jake yelled.
"Shouldn’t we help?"
"Min is all the help Sampson needs. This chaos will settle before I have you locked in the van and on the way to the airport."
"Where’s Colby?"
"Waiting for your sorry ass." Jake shook his head. "Teela’s been going off on me for the last half hour over your antics. I won’t be surprised if she’s disappeared again by the time we get back. She’s pissed at you, me, and mostly herself for putting you in the position to get hurt."
"I’m not hurt any worse than I would be sparing with you guys on the mats."
Jake grunted, "Say that after you look at your face in the mirror."
I followed Jake to the van. Police sirens wailed in the distance, but they were coming closer. We needed to be gone before we had to answer questions that would delay Colby’s reunion with CK even longer.
The backseat of the van had been converted so that the cargo area was now big enough to hold a stretcher. A pale little boy was asleep on the stretcher. The stretcher was held into place with cargo straps, and a man I didn’t recognize kneeled beside the stretcher.
"He’s an EMT we brought along to monitor the child during evacuation. Buckle up."
I took the passenger seat and buckled in.
"Keep your head down and don’t worry. I’ve done this before," Jake said as he pulled out of the parking spot and headed toward the police sirens.
"Won’t they stop us?"
"Not if we look like we belong here and not running from something."
"Are you sure?"
"Pretty sure. Usually works."
I held my breath and focused on the glove compartment in front of me instead of scanning the horizon for trouble like I wanted to do, but Jake was right. The cops passed us and continued to their destination while we drove the speed limit to the airport. Dad’s jet was waiting for us.
"Where are the other children?" I asked as we boarded the empty jet.
The FBI have them. They are best suited to finding their parents and getting them safely home, but this one is our responsibility. We stepped aside to let the EMT enter with Colby, who moaned in his sleep.
"He’s coming around," the EMT said in passing.
"Anesthesia?" I asked.
"Yeah. Min and I arrived at the surgery suit after they’d anesthetized him. Probably a good thing. We didn’t have to worry about scaring him," Jake said.
"What about Micah? Did you see him?"
"No, but the FBI knows the story with the boy. They’ll make sure he isn’t separated from his mother. I can’t say as much about his father though. Your boy Kahlil will see hard time."
"Doubt it," I muttered as I settled in a plush seat and buckled up.
Why does the trip home always feel twice as long as the trip away from home? I missed Teela. Sure, she was going to kick my ass when I got there, but afterward, it would be so good. I hadn’t known Teela that long, especially if I subtracted the months when she was away at the cabin, but I couldn’t imagine my life without her.
The flight attendant brought me a phone.
Dad said, "Where are you, boy?"
"About an hour from landing, I think."
"Why haven’t you called Teela? She’s worried. Hell, boy, I’m worried."
"Teela has me wired up so much that she knows when I take a fart, Dad. She knows I’m okay. She can probably give you the exact time we are scheduled to land, my body temperature, and when to expect my next bowel movement."
"If that is true, then you know she is listening to this conversation. Speak nicely or I can’t guarantee she’ll be at the airport to greet you when you arrive."
"She’ll be there. I have faith."
"What you have is that kid she wanted rescued."
"That too."
Another call buzzed through.
"Dad, I’ve got another call coming through. It might be for the pilot. I should pick up."
"Let me know when you’ve arrived. Teela isn’t the only one who loves you."
"Will do."
I picked up the second call and was met with silence.
