Chapter 151: Impromptu Wedding Plans

"Ouch. Ouch. Ouch." I blew on my hand as Alec disinfected the scrapes on my hand.

"Bear the pain. It will be over soon."

"Shouldn’t we be addressing your injuries?" I caressed Alec’s discolored cheek.

"I can wait."

"So can I."

"I should kill the asshole for touching you."

"Why? Do you really want me to spend who knows how long visiting you in prison?"

"You’d do that for me?"

"It’s the least I could do if you killed a man for me."

"The prison chaplain could marry us."

"Conjugal visit honeymoon?"

"It would be unique."

"Or, you can let King live, and we could go to the cabin for two weeks. Climb rocks. Avoid snakes."

"Make love."

"Make love," I agreed.

"It might be worth letting him live."

"I think King will be preoccupied with those illegitimate children. He takes family seriously. And who knows, he liked those women once. Maybe one is a good match for him now."

"Good point. If he has his own woman, maybe he’ll leave mine alone." Alec dropped a kiss on my cheek.

"My turn. Hand over the first aid supplies."

"Shower first. Join me?"

The shower was hot in more than one way, and it wasn’t just an excuse to mix good hygiene with mind-blowing sex. It gave me an excuse to examine Alec’s entire body for injuries.

He had bruises on his ribs that matched those on his face. His knuckles were raw, and he was limping on his sore ankle. Sure, practically no one else would have noticed, but I knew every part of Alec. I saw the limp. I saw the exhaustion in his face, the worry, and the need to reaffirm that I still chose him over all others.

Granted, the limp was probably caused by me when I took him to the ground in an attempt to break up the fight, but it was still a limp. I’d see how he was doing in the morning before panicking, though. I could be that patient.

I towel-dried his hair. "I love you."

"Marry me, Teela. Right now."

"Shouldn’t we at least secure a marriage license first?"

"Say yes. I’ll take care of the rest."

"I believe I already said yes."

"You agreed to marry me, but not immediately. Skip the setup and just do it."

"You’re exhausted. Let’s sleep on it."

"I’ll sleep better with my wife by my side."

"I’ll be by your side regardless of our marital status."

My phone vibrated. I ignored it, but it vibrated again and again.

"Pick it up," Alec said. "They aren’t going away."

I expected trouble. Why else would someone be blowing up my phone at this hour?

What I got was Ben adding everyone and their brother to a group chat where he was spamming pictures of him and Min in matching black tuxes, both wearing bowler hats—lucky boys—and flashing matching wedding rings. In the background, pink flower bouquets flanked a priest. Behind the priest was an oversized cross and stained-glass windows.

"O-M-G!" I squealed in glee. "Alec, look, look. My ship has sailed."

Ben: Congratulate me, folks. Min and I are now husband and husband. It’s official. He’s all mine. Hands off.

Teela: OMG, Ben, congratulations. Why didn’t you tell me? I would have stood by your side.

Ben: I didn’t ask him until the closing ceremony. He said yes, can you believe it?

Stiff: You woke me for this? We all saw it coming.

Teela: True. Min has been into you ever since I’ve known him. Longer, if I had to guess.

Ben: And you didn’t tell me?

Teela: It was pretty evident to anyone paying attention. Where is the man in question?

Ben sent a selfie of Min’s head in Ben’s lap. The love in Min’s eyes was beautiful.

Alec: How did you get married so quickly?

Uh oh, I knew where this was leading.

Ben: Why? Are you next?

Alec: Text me the details.

Alec was dressed and tossing clothes at me before I’d finished chatting with Ben.

"Come one, Teela, get dressed. We’ve got to go."

"Got to or you want us to?"

"Don’t be difficult." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

I was surprised to find Alec had at least thrown me traditionally wedding-appropriate colors if not appropriate garb. The jeans were white. The sweatshirt was a soft pink with white lettering of the word love. I dressed them up with sparkly shoes. The shoes were the first gift Alec had ever given me.

Alec removed twin ring boxes from the safe in the closet and grabbed my hand as I tried to throw some makeup on.

"Hey!"

"Put it on in the car. We’re going."

"Alec, let me grab my makeup bag."

Alec let go long enough for me to grab my bag and rejoin him, but I wasn’t exactly happy about it. The dim interior lighting of the car wasn’t exactly ideal for putting on makeup. Not to mention, getting married in a sweatshirt and jeans was no girl’s dream wedding attire. At least Alec was dressed in black slacks and a leather jacket. His hair was wavy around his face. The bruises on his face didn’t exactly mar his good looks. Instead, they made his face more interesting.

"Do you want me to touch up your bruises?" I offered.

"No."

Alec’s expression didn’t reflect happy anticipation. Rather, he looked like he was headed to a shotgun wedding as the unwilling participant.

"Hey, we don’t have to do this." I said softly, unsure why he was so unhappy. It wasn’t like I instigated this impromptu wedding.

"Yeah, we do."

"But you’re not happy about it."

Alec turned his head from staring out the window to staring at me. "What makes you think that?"

"Your face."

"Teela, you know me. If I didn’t want to marry you, then no one could make me. You know that."

"Tell your face."

"I’m just tired. I want to marry you. This will be over with soon."

"This will be over with soon? Is that how you see marrying me? Alec, when or if I marry again, it will be the last time. It won’t be over with soon."

"Tee, I don’t mean the marriage. I mean the ceremony."

Okay, I was getting pissed now. Wasn’t it women who were generalized as fickle and hard to read? Why was Alec acting like this. I was perfectly content staying at home with Alec and enjoying some alone time together, especially after all the drama with King.

It was Alec who all of a sudden wanted to get married now. I was perfectly fine with taking our time and creating a wedding that was suitable for his stature. I knew his family wanted a traditional wedding, and I suspected, deep down, so did Alec. After all, it was his first marriage.

Personally, I’d been married before. It wasn’t a good one. I wasn’t so eager to do it again. What Alec and I had now was good. It was really good. I wasn’t sold on having children, especially this early in the relationship. But I did want to give Alec what he needed to feel secure in our relationship. He was that important to me.

I tried to remain calm and talk to Alec. I didn’t want to marry Alec if he was upset or not totally devoted to this endeavor.

"Alec, I’m here for you. We will do whatever you want, but you don’t look like you want to do this. It’s okay if you’ve changed your mind. We can go home and sleep on it."

"Stop it, Teela. If you don’t want to marry me, just say it. I can have the driver drop you off at the church or Stiff’s place, or I can call King to pick you up."

I was confused. "King? Wait. What happened? I thought we were over this?"

Alec pulled out his phone and handed it to me. "Your Prince Charming sent me this while you were dressing."

King: Teela is my woman. I bought and paid for her fully. You can fuck her. You can marry her, but she’s still mine. I’ll take her away from you, asshole. She’s just confused. Her mom gave me to her as part of a land deal because she knew Teela isn’t capable of taking care of herself.

King: Call me whenever you’re done with her. I’ll take her off your hands. She’s not worth much, but I can pay you to help you get over the embarrassment of being taken for a ride.

What the fuck? I knew King devalued me, but I’d never heard him talk about me like this before.

"Is it true? Did he buy you?"

"Yeah. I didn’t know, though. Not until later. I thought we were in love." I handed him back his phone.

"Why does he think you’ll go back to him, Teela? Have you done this before?"

My head was reeling. "Alec, I’ve told you about my background. The only time I returned to King was right after the first time I left the Heavenly household, and even then, it wasn’t willingly. King was drunk and called me to pick him up from a bar. He then forced me back into the estate."

"Were you seeing anyone at the time?"

"No. I’ve dated no one since King but you."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Then what is this?"
