Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 77 - 75 Wild Boar
Chapter 77: Chapter 75: Wild Boar
Chapter 77 -75: Wild Boar
Shen Yunfang walked along the path from the backyard to the hillside, pausing every few steps to part the grass, revealing the sweet potato vines hidden within.
She reached in to pinch a handful of tender shoots and tossed them into her space before continuing on her way. With this stop-and-go progress, by the time she reached the foot of the hill, she had collected quite a bit.
The leftover sweet potato vines, which she hadn’t wanted to waste, were planted in grass husks by Yunfang without much expectation for a fall harvest. At first, the sweet potatoes seemed to grow well, but as time went by, they became more and more ruined. Their nutrition was taken by weeds, their sunlight blocked by the same. What was left for them to thrive on, it would be odd if they grew well.
So when Yunfang realized something was wrong, she would pinch off a handful of the tender leaves every time she passed by, contributing a bit more to the country’s construction.
The path up the mountain had been trodden by the goats and Yunfang hundreds of times over the past few months, making them extremely familiar with it and hence speeding up the journey. When she reached the small hillside, she saw from a distance that there seemed to be a problem with her secret base.
She hurriedly ran over, only to find it was indeed the case. To prevent small animals like rabbits and pheasants from gnawing at her sweet potatoes, she had erected a half-meter-high fence of tree branches around the plot. Now the fence had been breached by something, leaving a gap, and the branches on that side had all fallen.
Had someone discovered it? Was it sabotage? If the person was still around, what would she do when they saw her? Admit it or not? Yunfang wondered and worried as she approached.
When she arrived, she gasped. On the ground, there was a trail of footprints—none of them human. Relieved but at the same time anxious, Yunfang examined the damage.
The side that had been destroyed faced several watermelon vines. Several large watermelons scattered on the ground had been ravaged. The land was fertile, and Yunfang had often come to water and weed, so the sweet potatoes, watermelons, and melons all grew well. Almost ten watermelon vines produced more than thirty large watermelons. By now, each fruit weighed over ten pounds, and by the time they ripened, they could each weigh more than twenty pounds with no problem.
However, as the person who had planted these watermelons and had not yet allowed herself to enjoy them, Yunfang found that others had beaten her to them, namely, a pig.
Yes, based on the footprints, Yunfang had preliminarily concluded that it was a pig’s. Her family raised pigs, and she saw them every day, so she recognized the print.
Upon further inspection, six watermelons had been crushed, and several melons had been gnawed to halves. The sweet potato vines had been uprooted but thankfully, it seemed only the vines were affected, which shouldn’t harm the sweet potatoes underground.
After assessing the damage, Yunfang remembered to look around to see if the wild boar was still nearby. If it was, she wouldn’t have to worry about her crops; she would have to worry about her own safety.
Fortunately, it seemed the wild boar had eaten its fill and left. There was no sign of it nearby.
Once she had confirmed it was safe, Yunfang began to wonder if the wild boar, having gotten a taste, would come back for her watermelons or devastate her sweet potatoes again.
When she first planted in this area, she hadn’t been too concerned. It wasn’t her own backyard, and even if crops grew, they might not be hers to claim. If someone discovered the plot, she certainly wouldn’t admit it was hers; if the harvest failed, there would be no grounds for complaint—it was just a few seeds, after all.
But over the many days since, she had come to check on it every so often. Having invested her efforts, her attitude had changed. She was no longer indifferent; she was now eagerly looking forward to a bountiful autumn harvest.
Now that the wild boar had ravaged it, she felt neither resigned nor at ease.
What to do? With her small stature, fighting a wild boar was out of the question…
Yunfang crouched in front of the destroyed watermelons for a good while before standing up and taking a small shovel from her space. She was going to dig traps, determined to catch the wild boar.
And so, puffing and panting, she began digging traps in the open space in front of the fence. Of course, not the kind of large pits that could contain a wild boar; she couldn’t dig one that big by herself. She had to simplify.

She dug arm-thick holes, only as deep as a small forearm. After going about ten centimeters straight down, she slanted them forward, the overall shape resembling a person’s bent arm.
She had heard about this type of trap in her previous life from a boastful classmate. For long-legged animals, especially heavy ones, if they were to step in and lunge forward inside the hole, they could potentially break their legs.
However, the odds of this were low, and it would only work by chance.
Shen Yunfang had spent the whole morning digging no less than twenty holes, all scattered on one side.
She was gambling that if the wild boars came again, they would follow the same old paths.
After finishing the traps, she continued to find materials to repair the fence, then looked back at the holes she had dug, thought for a moment, and went to the side to dig up several wild vegetables with a shovel. She placed them directly on top of the holes, the leaves of the wild vegetables spread out, perfectly covering the holes.
Shen Yunfang felt that wild boars also have intelligence. If these traps were just laid out so obviously, the wild boars definitely wouldn’t be fooled. By spreading the wild vegetables like this, it looked as if they naturally grew here, which should help to deceive sight and sound.
Alas, she had no confidence in her hunting skills, so she just did her best and left the rest to fate.
After returning, her mood was not great. Whatever she did, she kept thinking about this matter, always worrying whether the wild boar would come back, whether her traps would work, and whether the watermelon would get destroyed again.
The next day, bright and early, she led her flock of sheep up the mountain.
Before getting to the hillside, she thought about it, tied the lead sheep to a tree, left the flock at the foot of the hill, and climbed up alone.
However, when she ran to the top of the small hill, the shock almost made her lose her balance and stumble.
What was that, baring its teeth at her – a real wild boar?
Then, a huge wave of excitement crashed over her. Such a big wild boar was lying on the traps she had dug yesterday. Does it mean that her traps worked, and this big wild boar was now hers?
Shen Yunfang stood in place, staring at the sneering wild boar for a good while. One of its front legs and one back leg were stuck in the small holes. From her angle, they were bent at an unnatural angle, which meant broken. Yes!
After making sure the wild boar truly couldn’t stand up and wasn’t faking it, she slowly and carefully approached it.
Wild boars are social animals, so Shen Yunfang feared there might be others nearby.
As she approached, the wild boar on the ground became more vociferous, almost hoarse from screaming. This scared Shen Yunfang, so she quickly looked around.
It wasn’t calling its mates to come and get her, was it?
Shen Yunfang didn’t dare to get any closer, stopping five meters away from the wild boar.
In her excitement and nervousness at seeing the wild boar, she hadn’t checked to see if the garden had been damaged. Thankfully, it was just as she had left it the day before. The wild boar must have been taken down before it could enter the garden.
After ensuring that her garden was unharmed, she began to meticulously observe this massive intruder.
The first thing she confirmed was that it was a male wild boar; although she had never actually seen a wild boar in her previous life, she had watched Animal World. Those long, curved tusks were enough to determine its gender.
Lying down, its exact size was indiscernible, but judging by the spread of its belly, Yunfang tentatively guessed it must weigh about three hundred pounds.
While Shen Yunfang was observing the wild boar, it too was restless, continuously squealing and trying to pull its hooves out of the traps.
Shen Yunfang could only stand by and watch, not daring to approach. Despite the wild boar being down, with its current fighting capacity, it could still definitely beat her to a pulp.
Shen Yunfang walked around the wild boar a few times, realized she couldn’t bring herself to harm it, and decided to step aside and leave it be, choosing to go check on her small courtyard instead.
