Chapter 1229: Responsibility

When the call came through to Olympus that such a powerful monster had appeared in the world, and was imminently threatening the safety of an entire star, Lifre jumped to action. The rest of the Keeper’s servants were all preparing for the upcoming invasion, so she was the only one truly free. At the same time, she wanted to use this as a good chance to show the others that she would be able to handle things while they were gone.

I can’t go with them… but I can at least let them go with peace of mind. She thought to herself as she memorized the coordinates for the distress call, tearing open a portal to arrive in the solar system. As soon as she arrived, she spread her senses out to broadly cover the entire system, pinpointing the position of the rapidly approaching monster.

During the past century, Lifre had also been training herself, not merely allowing her virtual avatar to handle her streams. She spent a lot of time in Fyor, experiencing battles with creatures whose size could be measured in light years. Compared to those, this monster was roughly as strong, but far, far smaller.

Its appearance was similar to that of a giant squid with eight eyes, evenly spaced around its head. Its body was red in appearance, and its tentacles were jutting out straight behind it as it sped through space. It was hard to tell whether it was aiming for the star in particular, or if it was just passing through. Regardless, its sheer size would be enough to destroy the star in its passing.

With a light hmph, Lifre teleported in front of the space squid, looking like an insignificant speck before the giant wave of approaching flesh. During her decades of training, Lifre had developed numerous ways to deal with creatures that were ‘large beyond comprehension’. The most obvious one was to make herself even bigger, but that was incredibly inefficient.

What Lifre preferred to use was far more effective, and also required far less energy. Reaching one hand into a golden portal, she withdrew a divine blade, and held it in her hand. Lifting the sword up in front of her face, she stared past it at the giant monster approaching.

Absurdity of Fate, inverted depth! She shouted in her mind, her mana boiling across her body. This mana didn’t seem to ‘do’ anything at first, as if it dissipated into space. However, the effects soon became obvious. The closer to Lifre the creature approached, it became exponentially smaller. From a body longer than the width of a star, it rapidly shrank. Soon, it was barely as long as a planet.

By the time its speed brought it in front of Lifre, it was barely as large as a normal squid. This entire process happened within the span of only a few seconds, so it was hard to tell whether the monster even realized what was happening. Especially given that its speed had been reduced in proportion to its size.

Lifre poured her divinity and ki into her blade, enhancing its sharpness to an extreme as she sliced through its body in one motion. Having long since mastered the Martial Will of Severing, she was able to easily cut through such a powerful creature, so long as she put in enough energy. Of course, having condensed its body to such an extent had made it that much more durable, so she had to go all-out with the energy usage.

If I can’t easily become as big as you, I’ll just make you as small as me. Lifre thought to herself with a sly smirk, looking at the two halves of the monster that glided lifelessly past her. She waited for a moment, using her control of ki to bring the remains to a complete stop, before undoing the transformation brought about by the Absurdity of Fate.

Immediately, the size of the monster erupted, returning to its former majesty. Yet, its death was irreversible. Lifre nodded her head in satisfaction, leaving the corpse to be disposed of by the locals as she teleported away.

Back in the starport, the blue Solar Sylvan swallowed thickly. She had just witnessed the massive monster rapidly approaching, only to shrink down at an unimaginable speed. Before she understood what was happening, the creature had entirely disappeared from the scanners, only to appear a few seconds later, already cut into two halves.

Behind her, Lina was still urgently awaiting news. “Has the Keeper’s servant arrived yet?” She asked, snapping the other Sylvan out of her daze.

“Y-Yes. She has dealt with the monster. It should be visible from the starport any second.” She answered hesitantly. She knew that dealing with such a powerful monster no doubt consumed a great deal of energy. In fact, the scanners had detected a massive spike in both mana and ki prior to the monster’s demise.

Lina, although briefly surprised that the threat had already passed, let out a sigh of relief. She pat the other Sylvan on the shoulder, thanking her for her work. Only then did she realize that she had come for something else, and hurried back out to try and find Pierce, wanting to give him the information he had asked for.

After dealing with the space squid, Lifre wasn’t idle. This event had lit a fire in her heart. As soon as she returned to Olympus, she asked if there were any other major problems throughout the various universes. Whether it was on the scale of a planet being destroyed, or a god running amok and needing to be brought to justice, she was determined to help in any way she could.

I need to get people used to the idea of me being the one to respond to problems. She thought to herself, splitting off copies of herself to handle each task as it came in. Meanwhile, Lifre herself sat atop the root of the void tree, using it to replenish the energy that she spent handling each crisis.

If people get used to me taking a more active approach now, while the others are all here, then their activity can fade into the background. By the time the invasion happens, nobody will notice if they’re gone for a few weeks.

Thanks to her constant streaming, Lifre had long since replaced Tsubaki as the most famous of the Keeper’s servants. Billions of people watched her streams in real time, and even more watched clips of her compiled by others online.

There was even one stream where her top all-time supporter, Flonne, donated ten black gold coins at the start of a new scenario. That was the single-largest donation that had ever been made to a streamer, and it started off her longest stream to date, one where she herself became a Keeper.

Or, at least, what Flonne imagined a Keeper to be. It didn’t include the points system, the market, Admin Room, or anything like that. Instead, she had become a divine creator, able to control an entire universe with her imagination.

That stream, in particular, lasted nearly twenty years. However, from Lifre’s perspective, due to all of the montages that she had to use, it was closer to a thousand. A thousand years as a divine creator, allowing her to shape the world as she saw fit.

Feeling her thoughts wandering to that stream, she quickly shook her head to focus. The point was that Lifre had become a household name, the first person anyone thought about when talking about the Keeper’s servants. Now that she was going to be the only one left for a while, she had to capitalize on that as much as she could.

Tsubaki gave a small smile as she looked at Lifre, sitting atop the branch of the void tree. She could easily guess what was going through the slime girl’s mind, and she was impressed. The Lifre that she had originally met would never try to shoulder this burden, she would never have volunteered to run around and handle every request that reached Olympus.

She still remembered back when Lifre was fighting with paperwork… quite literally, in her sense. She did anything she could to get out of doing actual work, pursuing her ultimate goal of enjoying life. Seeing her actively taking such a role, and knowing that it was for their sake, she couldn’t help but acknowledge how much Lifre had matured. Even if she still acted like a kid at times, she had long-since become a truly responsible servant of the Keeper.

With that thought in mind, Tsubaki turned to head deeper into her own palace. Originally, she had planned to respond to the distress call, but stopped when she realized that Lifre had already done so.

Now, there was only one thought going through her mind. I can’t let it all be for nothing. Tsubaki knew how important this upcoming invasion was, after all. She also knew of its danger. One wrong step from any of them could lead to the entire group being decimated.

Having experienced this firsthand in the many simulations that they had done to prepare, Tsubaki still felt as if she wasn’t truly ready. She didn’t know if she would ever feel like she would be ready.

She made her way to her bedroom, sitting cross-legged on the bed, and began to meditate. Over the Keeper’s extended absence, she had been working on various ways that she could kill an Origin. This would be her greatest hurdle, given just how hard it was to achieve.

She had created a few methods over the last few decades, but had not had the chance to truly test them. Obviously, there were currently no hostile Origins within their realm, so she could only keep these techniques in the realm of theories for the time being.

Taking a deep breath, she allowed her ki to roll over her body, swirling around her like a storm. I need something more assured. I need a method that will guarantee the death of a target, no matter who or what that target is.

Long ago, the Keeper had blessed her with an absolute affinity for all four primary energies. To date, Tsubaki had only used this affinity to master the various martial arts that the Keeper had acquired, adding them to her arsenal. Now, she was trying to master something new. She wanted to create a set of techniques that were entirely unique to her.

The first step, I need a special Martial Will. One that will destroy anything in my way. The Martial Will of Annihilation. The moment Tsubaki thought about that, the bed that she was resting on shattered, turning to dust beneath the force of her ki. Regardless, Tsubaki didn’t fall, hovering in place as if nothing had happened. As if she didn’t even realize what was going on around her.

Martial Wills can be seen similar to an active use of a domain. If I can combine multiple wills, will I be able to achieve a result similar to Julia’s universe-shattering sword? She had always wondered if this was possible, but had never dared to test it. After all, the first person to be hit by the effects of such a combination would inevitably be Tsubaki herself.

But now, as she floated in midair with a storm of destructive ki around her, she realized her mistake. With her perfect affinity to ki, she could manifest a Martial Will with only a thought, even if it was one that she had never practiced before. Additionally, she could manifest this Martial Will outside of her own body, preventing her from facing the risk of a direct backlash.

All she had to do was determine what combination of wills she would use, and she could complete the first stage of her personal fighting techniques. Techniques that nobody else would ever be able to replicate, because they could only be done by someone with her affinity.
