Writing Web Novels In America-Chapter 211 - 209 Writers
Chapter 211: Chapter 209 Writers
Long Island, inside a luxurious villa.
A White man in his fifties sat on a sofa, incessantly pressing the remote control.
As the African American female writer Tony Morrison’s agent and lover, he felt annoyed as he watched the young Asian writer on the television.
"Why are CBS, ABC, and NBC all broadcasting this matter? Is there really nothing else in the United States to focus on?" he muttered, massaging his forehead.
"Now, African American stars in the film, music, and sports industries have already expressed their anti-discrimination stance through the media."
Tony Morrison picked up her coffee and took a sip, "And yet, as the only African American, female Nobel Laureate in Literature, I do not support Wang, who is also a writer."
She paused, considering which words to use.
After a moment, she slowly said, "This might even make people think that I have betrayed my own race."
"You are not like them; you are a literati," the agent argued loudly. "Most of your challengers are White."
"The African Americans who buy your novels are even fewer than those rednecks in Texas!"
"What about him?" Tony Morrison pointed to the television screen. "Tiger Woods has already been interviewed."
"There’s a large portion of White folks in the golf audience too!"
"But didn’t you say that Wang’s work is just pandering to readers without any bottom line?" The agent took out a physical copy of "Arcane Throne" and threw it onto the coffee table.
Tony Morrison looked at the book cover and frowned.
Ever since "Arcane Throne" had outsold her book "Beloved" on the bestseller list, she had carefully read the novel.
The result was that Tony Morrison deeply despised the so-called "internet literature" represented by this Asian writer.
That was her main reason for hesitating to make a statement on this matter.
At that moment, a segment suddenly cut in on the CBS news.
"I have invested my own money to perfect the details of ’Anomalies and Creatures’!"
"This is my perseverance as a writer and my respect for my fans!"
"I miss my African brother, as well as that cat, that dog!"
Then, the screen switched back to the studio.
A young female host, facing the camera, said solemnly, "This is footage of a negotiation for the hit series ’Anomalies and Creatures’ sent by an anonymous insider."
"While this proves that ABC is not intentionally discriminatory, the insider information has still shocked us!"
"Could it be that even Wang, a well-known best-selling author across the United States, has no say in his own work’s film adaptation?"
"So, let’s see how many classic works NBC, ABC, and Hollywood have ruined!"
She paused and looked at her speech in hand, "Let’s choose Walt Disney, one of the six major production companies, to represent Hollywood."
This...
Tony Morrison stared blankly at the television.
As a winner of the highest honor in world literature, she, like many renowned authors, had numerous grievances about film adaptations of their work.
The agent glanced at the female author and quickly picked up the remote to change the channel.
However, ABC was also broadcasting the related news.
Of course, there was no news segment that smeared itself.
"Now, let’s count the classic masterpieces destroyed by CBS and NBC."
"As for Hollywood, let’s pick 21st Century Fox, owned by the Viacom Group."
Coincidentally, Tony Morrison’s works were among those mentioned.
The female writer fixedly watched the TV screen and after a few minutes, she sighed deeply.
"Although I do not like Wang’s work."
"I must admit, in terms of a writer’s perseverance, he is much more admirable!"
Tony Morrison turned to her agent and firmly said, "On racial issues, I may choose to compromise."
"But as a writer’s honor, I am compelled to support him."
The agent looked at the TV screen, reminiscing about his past dealings with Hollywood moguls.
He silently picked up his coffee and took a sip.
After a moment, the agent sighed deeply and stood up, "If you insist, then I will contact the media."
Soon after the agent left, the phone in the living room suddenly rang.
The female author, puzzled, picked up the phone and heard a familiar baritone voice.
"Morrison, have you seen the recent news?"
"Winston Groom?" Tony Morrison asked, somewhat surprised.
Ever since "Forrest Gump" won the box office and several Oscars, the original author had not contacted his old friends for a long time.
"Wang is a classical writer!" Winston said passionately, "Although I do not agree with his work."
"But his spirit of saying ’no’ to capital on behalf of the writers community is exactly what we contemporary writers are lacking!"
"Yes!" Tony Morrison also agreed with this view.
"I have already instructed my agent to contact the media to prepare for publicly supporting Wang!" freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"An individual’s strength is far from enough!" Winston Groom said loudly, "Morrison, I hope you can attend the upcoming meeting of the Writers Association."
"Are you planning to propose issuing a statement of support on behalf of the association?" Tony Morrison was very surprised.
"That’s impossible!" she said decisively, "You know our writers’ nature."
"The last public statement issued by the association was Mr. O. Henry’s obituary."
"Even Mr. Hemingway did not receive this honor!"
"This time is different!" Winston Groom was confident, "Who among those qualified to join the association hasn’t had their work adapted?"
"And of those adaptations, how many are truly satisfactory?"
"Plus, I have already contacted Stephen King, and he has agreed as well."
"We are going to contact Mr. Joseph Heller."
"If we have his support, perhaps the proposal might pass, don’t you think?"
"Mr. Joseph Heller?" Tony Morrison fell into a brief trance.
That was the author of the only classic American novel of the moment, "Catch-22."
Following O. Henry and Hemingway, a true treasure of American literature.
"If that’s the case, I will attend the meeting," Tony Morrison asserted.
"Excellent!" Winston Groom replied cheerfully, "I am currently contacting Neil Gaiman, George Martin, and Mr. Stephen King to connect with the association members."
"Tony, let us fight together for the dignity of literature!"
