Chapter 26: Chapter 26 Before Shooting

After signing the licensing agreement, Wang Jian stepped out of the small law office feeling clear-headed and refreshed.

He had a good sense of his negotiation skills.

A contract for $60,000 a year, he wouldn’t be able to haggle it up to $70,000 even if he killed himself.

Therefore, it was better to leave it to the professionals.

After all, he only had to pay a commission after the deal reached $90,000.

However he thought about it, he wasn’t losing out.

As for the licensing...

It was just advertising rights for "I’m a Great Mage."

He didn’t believe this guy named Tom could actually sell him out, did he?

With that, Wang Jian walked back to his apartment with a light step, ready to continue pondering over the issues of "Arcane Throne."

However, while he was racking his brains and still without a clue how to revise it, the phone suddenly rang.

When he answered the call, it was Tom, the young lawyer and copyright agent who had just signed the licensing agreement two hours ago.

All he could hear was Tom excitedly saying, "We’ve sealed the deal, a licensing contract for $115,000."

Wang Jian’s heart leapt with joy.

But the person on the other end continued, "However, they require you to appear in the advertisement as the author of ’I’m a Great Mage.’"

Huh?

Appear on screen himself?

Were you seriously flipping selling me now, Tom?

Wang Jian was speechless for a moment, about to question the other party.

But then he heard Tom, still excited, saying, "Plus, I found out that the interested party in ’I’m a Great Mage’ is one of the largest snack manufacturers in the United States, Mondelēz Group."

"They plan to launch a production line for a ’I’m a Great Mage’ series of corn products to test the waters."

"If the initial sales reach the expected figures, there might be a chance to sign a long-term contract with ’I’m a Great Mage.’"

"That would be a goose that lays golden eggs!"

This...

Images of "Popeye" branded spinach and "Superman" branded underwear popped into Wang Jian’s mind.

Uh,

It seems these can rake in big bucks!

He pondered for a moment, then asked, "So, what are their specific requirements?"

"..." All he could hear from the other end was Tom flipping through papers, then saying, "Exclusivity in the food industry for ’I’m a Great Mage’, and priority placement for the corn roll brand in any related film or TV adaptations of ’I’m a Great Mage’."

Film and TV rights related to "I’m a Great Mage"?

Wang Jian scratched his head, somewhat speechless.

Selling the rights from head to toe of a best-selling book was really something.

He pondered for a moment, then asked, "So, has the contract been signed?"

"The agreement has been tentatively signed; the official contract will be finalized after you shoot the ’I’m a Great Mage’ advertisement."

Wang Jian thought it over.

$115,000, a one-year license...

To appear on screen...

Uh,

That didn’t seem impossible.

So, he asked, "When has the other party decided to shoot it?"

"The sooner, the better," said Tom, so excited he was tripping over his words. "If you agree, we can shoot it tomorrow morning."

Wang Jian looked around his shabby apartment and thought about Manhattan’s exorbitantly high housing prices.

With gritted teeth and a firm stomp of his foot.

Let’s do it.

"You go and talk to them. Shoot it tomorrow morning, I have no issues here," Wang Jian said.

"Okay," Tom responded cheerfully.

Then, Wang Jian hung up the phone.

He stood up from the couch, went into the bathroom, looked at himself in the mirror, and touched his face.

Going to be on TV?

Why did it feel kind of strange?

And so, amidst this inexplicable sense of embarrassment, he spent the afternoon doing community service.

Then, lying in bed, he wondered what he should do once the money was in his hands.

And as for Lynn from Omnicom Group, who was in charge of coordinating the "I’m a Great Mage" advertising, she hadn’t slept well tonight either.

Besides considering the details related to the "I’m a Great Mage" advertisement shooting tomorrow, she was also thinking about whether to bring her son Gene to the set.

After all, Gene was so infatuated with "I’m a Great Mage."

Even if it was just getting an autograph from the author or taking a photo, it would be nice.

And she could also take advantage of Gene’s happiness to persuade Lily.

To consider Gene’s situation and then break up with that poor Asian boy with a criminal record.

She pondered for a moment, then picked up the phone and called Lily.

"Hello, Lynn, what’s up so late?" Lily’s cheerful voice rang out.

"I have good news for you," Lynn said with a smile, "Tomorrow, the author of ’I’m a Great Mage’ will be shooting the advertisement I’m responsible for."

"Should I ask Gene if he wants to come tomorrow?"

"Really?" Lily said with surprise, "Gene will be so happy. He’s been talking about the stories from ’I’m a Great Mage’ to his grandparents all day."

"He even switched his favorite snacks to corn rolls," Lily said indulgently.

"Ha, then it’s settled," Lynn laughed. "I’ll pick you up at 7 a.m. tomorrow. Make sure Gene goes to bed early and doesn’t oversleep."

"Don’t worry."

After Lily hung up the phone, Lynn felt as if she had put a huge stone down in her heart.

She sighed deeply, took a sip of coffee, and continued to review the shooting plan for tomorrow.

The next day.

Around 7:30 in the morning.

Wang Jian washed his face, then stepped out of his apartment.

Downstairs, he saw Tom waiting in a GM sedan.

As Wang Jian opened the car door, Tom said, "Once you get this money, you should move to a different apartment."

Wang Jian thought, "You think I don’t want to?" while taking the advertisement script from Tom and starting to read it.

Omnicom Advertising had designed three scenes for the advertisement.

In the first, Wang Jian sat at his desk wearing cheap clothes, lost in thought and unable to write.

Then, he took out a corn roll and started chewing.

The second scene showed Wang Jian jumping into an alternate space after eating the corn roll.

As he entered the alternate space, he simultaneously transformed.

His clothes gradually changed until he took on the look from the cover of "I’m a Great Mage."

Finally, a bunch of beautiful women appeared, splitting into two rows behind the transformed Wang Jian.

Eating corn rolls together.

The last scene featured Wang Jian in a suit, holding "I’m a Great Mage."

He looked into the camera and said, "As the author of ’I’m a Great Mage,’ I recommend ’Great Mage’ branded corn rolls to everyone. Please recognize the trademark and join us on a magical journey."

After reading the script, Wang Jian could hardly suppress the urge to critique it internally.

Until he repeated to himself, "One hundred and ten thousand US dollars, one hundred and ten thousand US dollars..."

Meanwhile, at the advertising studio.

Lynn was paying attention to the director arranging the setting,

while listening to Gene excitedly tell his mom and grandparents, "My classmates will be so jealous of me."

She took a deep breath and gestured for Lily to come over.

Then, she said to Lily, "I know about you and the Asian boy."

Seeing Lily’s expression change, she said very seriously, "As your close friend, I hope you find a new love."

"But that person shouldn’t be a poor Asian boy with a record. Lily, break up with him."

"He’s not right for you."

Lily’s face quickly turned red, then rapidly lost color.

"It’s not like what you think."

"Then what is it like?" Lynn pressed, her red wavy hair sparkling with a seductive luster in the sunlight.

"It’s just..." Lily faltered.

Suddenly, the production assistant for the advertisement called out loudly, "The ’I’m a Great Mage’ author has arrived, final preparations for all departments."

Hearing this, Gene quickly ran to the studio’s entrance.

Lily didn’t finish her sentence and chased after him.

Lynn also followed behind Lily, ready to continue persuading her.

Gene’s grandparents trailed behind everyone else.
