Writing Web Novels In America-Chapter 263 - 268: The First Generation of Internet Celebrities
Chapter 263: Chapter 268: The First Generation of Internet Celebrities
Queens County, NA.
Chris was holding the phone that Tom had given her, giggling to herself.
The latest "I’m Too Rich" made her think of her date with Wang Jian.
"Wang really has a knack for writing unexpected stuff," she said.
"Hi, Chris." Jill leaned in and whispered, "Stop staring at your phone and help me spot some quality men."
"Didn’t you notice there are a lot more guys here today, and they’re all looking our way?"
"Exactly." The other group members chimed in.
Actually, anyone of us could afford to be here.
Going to the Bronx District NA was more to accommodate Chris and her mother Bonnie.
"So, we’re quite the market in Queens," the nurse among them said. "In the Bronx, we don’t get this many secret glances!"
"Watch me," Jill whispered back, "Later, you guys help me pick out someone to date."
"What are you up to?" Chris asked, watching her head straight for the stage.
"Hello everyone, I’m Jill."
"Hi, Jill," the NA members responded in unison, as was customary.
"I got divorced because of alcoholism, but I’ve been sober for 200 days." She flashed the sign in her hand.
After that, Jill began to describe her situation and extended an invitation to date.
Her content was so explicit that even Chris blushed while listening.
"The gentlemen here really lack courage," Jill complained softly as she stepped off the stage.
But then, she quickly took out her phone and waved it, "The men here probably prefer to connect privately."
"Okay Chris, your turn," Bonnie nudged her daughter.
"Oh." Chris stood up and walked slowly to the stage.
"Hello everyone, I’m Chris."
"Hi, Chris!!!" The overwhelming response snapped her back to reality.
What’s going on? Is this a concert?
Chris looked at the shining eyes in the audience and was momentarily taken aback.
"Miss Chris, did you and Mr. Wang Jian know each other from childhood?"
"What kind of person is Mr. Wang Jian? Has he always had a talent for writing since he was little?"
"What’s it like dating him? Writers must be very romantic, right?"
This is...
Chris, who had never received much attention, was completely stunned.
"May I take a picture?" someone raised their hand to ask, "I’m a loyal reader of Mr. Wang Jian, and I’d like to post this photo on Twitter."
Wang Jian, reader?
Hearing this, Chris nodded subconsciously.
Then there was a rustling sound of many people leaving their seats.
"You all... have cameras?" She gaped, looking especially dumbfounded.
"Clearly..." Jill looked at the situation before her, somewhat speechless, "I’m much prettier than Chris!"
Meanwhile, in a restaurant in Brooklyn, the same thing was happening.
"Another one!" the short, plump Asian owner exclaimed loudly with excitement.
"Max, Caroline, come out! Someone is here for a photo with you again."
"I’m really fed up, am I a panda at the zoo or something!" Max complained from the kitchen, running his hands through his hair.
"Just a few photos, and so many people come!"
Unlike Max, Caroline was quite excited.
"It feels great to be back in front of the camera!" She clung tightly to Max’s shoulder, "Think about our business, Max."
"Wang Jian has given us $60,000," she said. "That’s enough for us to open our store."
"If we increase our exposure a bit, by the time our little bakery opens, it will definitely be a hit in New York City." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
"But those people..." Max thought of the scene where the flashbulbs kept going off, and felt her hair standing on end.
In the past few days, she had probably taken more photos than in the previous 23 years combined!
"Those are our potential customers and spontaneous advertisers," Caroline revealed her pearly whites. "Come on, think about the US Dollars we’ve earned in the past few days."
Well, in truth, Max had always hoped for a change, even if it meant taking up a part-time job as a nanny.
It was just that due to her environment, she never had the opportunity.
"So, it’s all for the money?" she asked, as if querying Caroline and persuading herself at the same time.
"Mhm!" Caroline handed a plate of cupcakes to Max, then held another plate in her hands.
"Buy a cupcake, and you can take a photo."
"Buy two cupcakes, and you can have a photo taken with the both of us."
"Two, I want two!"
"Don’t push, I was in line first!"
"I came yesterday, but the cupcakes were already sold out. Today, it’s my turn, right?"
"Caroline," Max asked softly, eyeing the frenzied crowd, "what do you plan to do once this craze dies down?"
"We can’t possibly keep this hype going forever."
"Hehe," Caroline whispered into Max’s ear, "I actually saved Wang’s phone number."
...
"Damn," Wang Jian was taken aback as he looked at the Twitter trending topics.
"What’s this, so many new photos suddenly?"
On closer examination, he realized they were all photos of the three ladies, corresponding with Chapters from "I’m Too Rich" that described them.
"Tom," Wang Jian inquired, "do these things have an impact on subscriptions?"
"Yes!" Tom nodded with a smile. "A very significant increase."
Uh...
Wang Jian tapped his fingers on the desk, weighing what was more important: fame or money.
So...
Screw fame!
"By the way, Wang," Tom continued, "a person from Hollywood stopped by. I heard they’re from Universal."
Universal, one of the big six in Hollywood?
After the plagiarism incident, he had lost all affection for Hollywood.
"They said it has something to do with Viacom."
Hmm?
Wang Jian frowned and gestured for the person to come in.
"Mr. Wang, hello," a middle-aged Caucasian man entered, greeting with a smile.
"May I know what the matter is?" Wang Jian tried to keep his emotions in check.
"Actually, we own 1% of the rights to ’Brewer’s Million Gift,’ and the rights to its film adaptation, ’Brewster’s Millions,’ are in our hands."
What does that mean?
Wang Jian’s brows furrowed slightly as he looked at the man.
Was he about to engage in a lawsuit with two major media corporations?
"Of course, please don’t misunderstand, Mr. Wang," the man explained with a smile. "Unlike Disney and Viacom, Universal has no interest in the publishing industry."
"I don’t know if Mr. Wang Jian has heard, but a film company under the Viacom Group is planning to produce an expensive biographical movie."
The middle-aged man sipped his coffee with a smile, then continued, "For that movie, they’ve even signed Tom Cruise with an extraordinarily high salary."
"I wonder if Mr. Wang Jian is interested in using his own biography to compete with that sports agent’s story?"
"Oh, right," he said, shrugging at Wang Jian, "the movie they’re preparing is called ’Jerry Maguire.’"
