Chapter 224: Chapter 219: Dying with Eyes Open

In this moment when his life hung by a thread, Ye Tian even started hallucinating.

He suddenly found himself back in the treacherous Dark World where all the enemies he had killed were revived. They were laughing sinisterly at him, brandishing axes and cleavers as they charged to tear him into pieces.

Then, he was back to his infancy, lying in a warm crib, sucking tirelessly on a baby bottle, filling his tiny stomach, growing up bit by bit.

He found himself back in the cozy villa in Jin Guan City, with Yun Xinyan calling him to get up for a meal. The kitchen was filled with the smell of milk and cereal. His wife’s cooking skills made him ravenous, and he ate voraciously.

All the illusions suddenly vanished, and Ye Tian’s bleary eyes once again saw the real world: in front of him was the long River Heart Road leading to the villa in Jin Guan City.

The road before him shook, twisted, and trembled, turning into ribbons, then into a giant snake. Ye Tian knew these were the hallucinations before death; his body had reached its limits. If he couldn’t make it back to Jin Guan City in time, if he couldn’t see Yun Xinyan once more and say those three words, he would die with his eyes open.

It was an unknown force that propelled Ye Tian onward; he crawled and stopped along the way, yet he actually made it back to Jin Guan City.

The security guard on duty recognized Ye Tian and immediately dialed 120 for emergency services. Ye Tian lay in front of the security booth on the concrete, his eyes slowly rolling back, already at death’s door, muttering incessantly, "Yun Xinyan, Yun Xinyan..."

The security guard was new and had been scared stiff by the sight of Ye Tian covered in blood. It was an older, steadier guard who told him, "Yun Xinyan is a female homeowner in our community. Hurry up and call her, the phone book is in the second drawer."

Just then, the xenon headlights of a supercar lit up the security booth; behind the wheel was a woman. On seeing the blood-covered man, she immediately got out of the car and ran to Ye Tian’s side. Holding him in her arms with a choked voice, she exclaimed, "Ye Tian!"

Seeing this, the older guard gestured to the new one that there was no need to look up the number, he pointed at the supercar’s female driver and murmured, "That’s Yun Xinyan."

Ye Tian’s eyes had turned white, the blood at his mouth had dried up, and no more blood seeped from his pores; he had bled dry. His lips turned purple-black and his body convulsed continuously. He was mumbling something unclear, too softly for anyone to hear.

Tears streamed down Yun Xinyan’s face as she leaned in close to listen, only to hear him say, "I... I... love... you... email..."

Unfortunately, before Ye Tian could finish speaking, he lost all vital signs and made no further sound. Yun Xinyan would never know what he wanted to say. The tragedy was so sudden, she was unable to accept it.

"Ye Tian! Ye Tian! Ye Tian!" Yun Xinyan sat on the cold concrete floor, yelling, but no matter how much she shouted or shook him, Ye Tian would no longer make a sound or move.

She couldn’t believe that the man she deeply loved, the one who had just made her dinner, the charming man who had won her heart, had left so silently!

She refused to believe it!

At this moment, Yun Xinyan felt her heart being torn apart piece by piece, the pain making it hard for her to breathe.

Seeing this, the old guard sighed deeply and said, "Miss Yun, death is irreversible. Please accept my condolences and try to move on."

The quiet midnight street was shattered by the wailing sound of an ambulance. It was the rescue team from 120 emergency response arriving.

The ambulance stopped at the entrance of the community. The rear doors were opened from the inside, and medical personnel in rescue uniforms jumped out, bringing out a stretcher and wheelchair, even a portable oxygen tank.

"Were you the ones who called for the ambulance? Where’s the patient?" After asking this, the medical staff saw the pool of blood on the ground and the young man in the pretty woman’s arms.

There was no need for further questions; this blood-soaked young man was unmistakably the one in need of rescue.

The medical team immediately made their way over.

Yun Xinyan, recovering from the shock, pleaded, "Please, you must save him, no matter the cost. I’ll write you a check right now."

The sudden turn of events had caused Yun Xinyan, normally so composed, to lose her reason as she offered to write a check on the spot.

The medical staff saw Ye Tian and furrowed their brows. After feeling his carotid artery, they shook their heads and said, "Director Zhang, you should have a look. This man, he..."

Director Zhang, an experienced professor, placed a stethoscope on Ye Tian’s chest without detecting a heartbeat, pried open his eyes to flash a light without any pupil contraction, and felt his palm—it was ice cold.

"Who is this gentleman to you?" Director Zhang asked Yun Xinyan with a frown.

"He’s my love," Yun Xinyan said, her face etched with worry. "Please, you have to treat him."

"We understand how you feel, but the dead cannot be brought back to life. Please accept your loss and don’t be too sad," sighed Director Zhang. He and the medical workers got back into the ambulance and left.

The night air was as cool as water. Yun Xinyan stood on the deserted road, beside her lay Ye Tian’s blood-drenched corpse. She felt her life was like this dark night, as if plunged into boundless darkness, stripped of all light.

Without Ye Tian, she didn’t even know what to do next, didn’t know where to go.

"How could this happen, how could this happen!" Yun Xinyan clenched Ye Tian’s hand, squatting in the dark and crying:

"Everything was fine at dinner; how could it suddenly have come to this, Ye Tian! Please wake up, you must be tricking me, you all must have colluded to trick me, right! Right!"

The only response to her questions was Ye Tian’s cold hand, devoid of the warmth of life, just coldness.

Yun Xinyan held Ye Tian in her arms, trying to warm his body with hers. She was covered in Ye Tian’s blood, but no matter what, she couldn’t warm his body; it remained as cold as ice, unmeltable.

"Why has this happened! Why!" Yun Xinyan sobbed, clutching her head in agony.

The new security guard wanted to come over to comfort her, but the old security guard held him back, knowing that some pains were beyond consolation.

After a long while, the weeping Yun Xinyan stopped crying and opened the door of the McLaren. She carried Ye Tian into the car, carefully propped him up in the passenger seat, and even fastened his seatbelt.

"I’m taking you home." Yun Xinyan started the car, silently drove into the residential compound, into the garage, walked into the villa, closed the door, just as they used to when Ye Tian was alive.

She cleaned the bloodstains off Ye Tian, changed him into fresh pajamas, then tucked him into bed, turned off the bedside lamp in his room, whispered goodnight, and only then did she go to her room to sleep.

Her bedroom was still the same as before she left, but Yun Xinyan knew that people were irreplaceably gone. She lay in bed, silently weeping, unable to sleep all night long. When dawn broke, she dared not enter Ye Tian’s room, because she was afraid to see his cold, lifeless body.

Yun Xinyan’s face was streaked with tears, the more she thought about it, the sadder she felt.

The wall clock ticked steadily away, striking eight o’clock. Yun Xinyan sat on the bed with a vacant gaze, her mind a jumble of thoughts, uncertain about what she was thinking.

Suddenly, her phone rang, and Yun Xinyan hastily answered it.

It was Bai Lan’s voice on the other end of the phone, "Xinyan, what’s wrong with you? Why didn’t you come to work today? The others are waiting for you for the meeting."

"Work? Work?" Yun Xinyan murmured, "He’s gone, what’s the point of going to work, what’s the use of earning more money, can it bring him back to life?"

"What are you talking about, I don’t quite understand," Bai Lan said.

"Ye Tian, he’s, he’s, he’s gone!" Yun Xinyan choked out, tears falling like rain. She finally spilled the tragic news.

"What happened to Ye Tian?" Bai Lan was startled on the other end of the phone.

Yun Xinyan stopped speaking and started crying bitterly over the phone, her sobs filled with indescribable sorrow and heartbreak.

Bai Lan, being a smart woman, guessed what had happened. She couldn’t believe it and solemnly said, "Don’t go anywhere; I’m coming to you right now, just wait for me."

Taking a taxi to Yun Xinyan’s house, Bai Lan soon saw Yun Xinyan, her face haggard as if she had aged ten years overnight, a silent testimony to her sleepless night of sorrow until dawn.

"Where is he, take... take me to see him." Bai Lan’s eyes were red and swollen, her voice trembling as she spoke.

Yun Xinyan wiped away the tears from her cheeks and pointed to the bedroom, "He’s in there."

The two women entered the room, and Bai Lan immediately saw Ye Tian lying on the bed.

He was dressed in clean pajamas, eyes closed, as if merely sleeping, but the observant Bai Lan noticed the blood on his body, especially at the edges, like around his ears and hairline—evident bloodstains.

Seeing this scene, a wave of sadness welled up in Bai Lan, shaking her tepidly, "Xinyan, when did this happen?"

"Last night! Ye Tian is gone... he doesn’t want me anymore..." Yun Xinyan no longer possessed the authority of a president, squatting on the ground wailing in pain, tears streaming down her face helplessly, like a little girl who had lost her most beloved toy, weeping bitterly.

Bai Lan herself was now in tears, the suddenness of it all gave her no time to prepare, "Did you take him to the hospital? Maybe it’s not as bad as you think. I heard that Professor Pitt from the UK is at the city hospital for an academic exchange, he’s an authority in this field. Why don’t we go and ask for his help?"

"Really? Take Ye Tian! Quick, take him there! I want him back alive, he can’t die!!!" Yun Xinyan clung to that last sliver of hope amidst her despair, a sight that tugged at the heartstrings.
