Xyrin Empire-Chapter 1491: Unending Situations, in Every Sense
I lifted my head and stared blankly at the scene outside the window.
Everything seemed normal, as if nothing had happened.
But I was sure I had just seen something amiss, even though it was just for a moment. Something definitely flashed by... It’s hard to describe what it was like. If I had to say, it was a bit like looking at the world through a kaleidoscope. The landscape outside the window became fragmented, the light twisted and tangled, details blurred, as if viewing through a piece of glass with uneven patterns.
The glass window outside had just turned into such a strange appearance... If this were happening on a spaceship, one could say it’s due to an optical distortion caused by ongoing Super Space-Time Jumping. But now, sitting in a tea room on Earth, I can only suspect that I might be experiencing an illusion—could it be that recently, I’ve been overworked, even my body is about to suffer from a nervous breakdown?
"What’s wrong with you?" Lin Xue was chatting idly with her brother, and immediately noticed my unusual behavior, curiously asking, "Is there a beauty doing backflips while rushing outside?"
Me: "...Why add such a long weird string of verbs after beauty!"
"You’ve seen so many beautiful women, no extra visual impact can make you lost in thought like this?" The Miss rolled her eyes, "Little Feng, you just mentioned that a werewolf of Chinese nationality went missing in Europe... As far as I remember, werewolves don’t originate in China."
Lin Feng didn’t bother responding to Lin Xue’s words, as he also stared blankly at the window outside like me, "Sis, I seemed to see the glass blur for a moment... Now it looks normal again."
The Little Crow, who was lying on the table counting crystal beads, also raised her hand, "I saw it too! I saw it too! The window blurred for a moment, caw!"
Lin Xue blinked in confusion, carefully examined the window closest to her, but found nothing unusual, then she turned to the two by the table who didn’t speak, Sally and Fox Fairy Lord both shook their heads, "Didn’t notice just now!"
"Are you all in cahoots to trick me?" Lin Xue pouted, then squinted her eyes slightly, "Let me see what’s going on, but if you’re playing such a boring joke... hey, the window really blurred for a moment just now!"
"Right, I even thought it was my illusion," I grinned, then suddenly froze, "Wait, this isn’t right..."
Most people present here aren’t ordinary, even Sally, who is theoretically a "normal person", knows all kinds of secrets. We deal with bizarre happenings the most every day, especially Lin Feng who is more sensitive to these matters. He first quickly scanned the surroundings, confirmed that all tea room guests seemed normal, then lowered his voice to talk to us, "Aside from Sally and the Fox Fairy Lord not noticing just now, now we all know the window outside just ’blurred’ for a moment. Brother Chen, tell us what scene you saw?"
I just described exactly what I saw, and then the Little Crow also chaotically described what she saw. Although the silly bird’s descriptions were all jumbled, it was essentially the same scene as I saw: a chaos outside the window. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"We can rule out illusion," Lin Feng nodded professionally, "Everyone saw the same scene, so it’s certain something happened outside the tea room just now. I judge it’s somewhat like a momentary illusion, but it seems like other people here didn’t see it... Sis, do you know what’s going on?"
Lin Xue opened her mouth, but before she could speak, I sensed a little thing moving on my chest, Dingdang cautiously poked her tiny head from the pocket edge and whispered, "Um... Dingdang has a situation to report..."
I instantly had a bad premonition, which came true as Dingdang continued, "The World Tree seemed to have alarmed just now..."
Upon hearing Dingdang’s words, everyone present broke out in a white sweat (except for the silly bird, who kept counting her newly acquired crystal beads), even the Silly Fox showed a tense expression; the fox usually had some personality issues but was quite sensible at the core.
I quickly patted my pocket to make Dingdang pull her head back, then opened the public channel of Spiritual Connection, conveniently pulling Lin Feng and Sally into the channel, "Don’t talk about it outside... The World Tree alarmed? What’s the situation?"
"Just a regular system error, it went ’ding’, the operating system alarmed, and then there was nothing."
Looking up at a forty-five-degree angle at the window lattice, I couldn’t imagine what the World Tree ’dinging’ would look like, so I tossed that question aside first, "So it just alarmed? And then there were no anomalies? The World Tree is a crucial entity..."
Dingdang’s tone was nonchalant, "It’s normal, the World Tree alarms at least once a week, reboots every month, the World bottom layer data has a certain error tolerance rate, as long as it doesn’t exceed the threshold, it’s running normally, this type of alarm is allowed to happen. Dingdang just let the World Tree perform a self-check, system status is good, alarm was due to the information stability state in this universe spilling over, but it’s been fixed."
The little thing added, "Actually, when the World Tree has minor alarms, Dingdang never mentioned it because it’s a daily occurrence, it’s only now that everyone said they saw something strange, and the World Tree alarmed just in time, that’s why I brought it up."
Upon hearing Dingdang’s explanation, I felt slightly relieved. Although the little thing is somewhat chaotic on various fronts usually, she is relatively competent in the role of "God"... Well, at least nothing major has gone wrong so far. Since she said it was just a minor glitch, it indeed seems to be just that. However, Lin Feng and Sally’s expressions still changed colors before us, Lin Feng looked at my pocket uneasily, "Brother Chen, if I remember correctly, this should be the current Main God of our world... How come I suddenly feel less optimistic about life?"
I smiled awkwardly, completely unsure of how to shield Dingdang from this verbal shot; forget Lin Feng, the first time I saw the World Tree’s blue screen, I too lost hope for this world...
"You said the World Tree has alarms ordinarily," Lin Xue pondered for a while, then in the Spiritual Connection, asked Dingdang, "So how come we’ve never noticed any world anomaly, but this time we did?"
"Fault compensation has discrepancies, the World Tree has the ability to automatically conceal and negate various faults, where there’s a disturbance in the universe, it immediately covers up the anomaly. This time it’s the same, so ordinary people here didn’t see anything strange. But ’fault compensation’ sometimes cannot deceive an observer with an overly strong Information Disturbance Power like Ah Jun, so he saw the window outside distort. Others who were close to Ah Jun, within a certain range are in the ’True Vision Zone’, so you all saw the anomaly too. Yet ultimately this is a matter of probability, the genuine operating system resolves faults faster than even the Father God can react, swiftly settling it," Dingdang explained, while simultaneously stretching out a small hand from my pocket, "Ah Jun, Dingdang wants some snacks!"
Lin Xue and I usually hear a group of immortals at home discussing such advanced issues often, so we’re long accustomed, but Lin Feng and Sally rarely encounter these topics, the two of them showed expressions as if listening to heavenly books, after much thought, Lin Feng finally summarized one point, "So Brother Chen essentially acts as a true eye? He just stands here, and the surrounding view opens up..."
I silently glanced at him, reached for a crumb of snacks and fed it into the pocket to Dingdang, while whispering to Lin Xue, "Your brother’s mouth is quite like yours."
Just then, not far from us, a table of guests got up to leave. These guests had a child, who took one glance in our direction, suddenly exclaimed, "Mom and Dad! That uncle is feeding his pocket with cookies!"
"Silly child, don’t shout, don’t look over there."
Me: "..."
After that table of guests left, Lin Xue’s face turned red from holding back laughter, she bent over with difficulty, holding in her laugh, and eventually kicked me under the table, "So you see, don’t spoil Dingdang too much usually, her Personal Space holds at least over two hundred cubic units of sweets, yet she always asks you for food, sooner or later you’ll raise her into a rice worm."
Before I could reply, Dingdang’s little hand reached out from my pocket again, "Ah Jun! Another piece! Dingdang didn’t eat enough early today!"
So I continued stuffing cookie crumbs into my pocket expressionlessly, while imagining my own image in other people’s eyes and explaining, "If I don’t feed it, this little thing will bite through the clothes, you know."
Lin Feng and Sally watched with great interest how I was feeding a small animal hiding in my pocket in a public place—they could tell that I was already very skilled at this, and I believed they wouldn’t see this kind of scene anywhere else. Sally had a smile on her face, eagerly looking at my pocket, "Um... can I try feeding it?"
Before I could speak, Lin Xue couldn’t help but knock on the table, "Absolutely not, it’s already eye-catching enough for him to feed his pocket alone. If you help with the feeding beside him, it might attract medical workers..."
Just then, a sudden ringtone interrupted our chat: it was Lin Feng’s phone.
Lin Feng took out his phone to answer the call, while I turned to Lin Xue and muttered, "Nowadays, young men over twenty using the Pleasant Goat theme song as a ringtone are rare, he’s really got a childlike heart."
Lin Feng waved at me quickly and then spoke a few words with the person on the other end of the line, seemingly agreeing while nodding. After he hung up, Sally curiously asked, "Another work call?"
"The ’unit’ called, saying that there’s a problem at an observation point," Lin Feng said vaguely, "No worries, I don’t have to travel far, it’s in this city, so I should be back by afternoon."
"Why hasn’t anyone called me," Lin Xue suddenly felt dejected and took out her phone, "I’m the head of this area, aren’t I? It seems like the higher-ups have forgotten me."
"You’re gone half the time with no trace, the Old Master already thinks of you like a married-out daughter who won’t return," Lin Feng said as he stood up, ready to settle the bill at the cashier, "Sally and I will head out first; I’ll quickly check the ’unit’ situation. If everything’s fine, maybe I can get back in time for a nap. You guys continue chatting, besides, Brother Chen, there’s something I’m not sure if I should say..."
I saw he looked a bit hesitant, instantly piquing my curiosity, "Go ahead, there’s no outsiders here."
Lin Feng pointed at Little Crow beside us, "Did you not notice she’s been squatting on the chair the whole time?"
Me: "... Silly bird, get down from there!"
After Lin Feng and Sally left, Lin Xue and I teamed up to educate Little Crow. Despite having transformed into human form for quite a while and evidently receiving daily education from the family, she still hasn’t shaken off a few bad habits: eating directly with her mouth instead of chopsticks during meals, squatting on chairs to eat, scratching her face with her feet (which is also the Fox Fairy Lord’s habit), picking up random rocks when out, and now also crowing on the rooftop early in the morning... The good news is that she’s mostly stopped trying to hatch eggs, but the bad news is she still messes up her bed into a bird’s nest, all torn apart.
The more I thought, the more my thoughts wandered, and eventually Lin Xue and I simultaneously stopped our educational efforts, realizing one thing: given all these bad habits of Little Crow, she’s probably beyond saving...
Noticing the adults quiet down, Little Crow instantly looked pleased and continued sorting her beloved glass beads laid all over the table: she hadn’t realized she did anything wrong earlier and, more crucially, was squatting on the chair again...
"I think," Lin Xue looked around, "it’s better for us to leave quickly. In the future, unless we’re in Shadow City, it’s best to keep these two little treasures away from public places."
I sighed, waking up the Fox Fairy Lord, who had been drooling on the table, ready to lead the treasures for a stroll around the artificial lake before heading home. As we left, the teahouse owner personally saw us off; he was a burly guy from Northeast China, appearing hearty and sincere. As he sent us off, he kindly reminded us, "School pressure is quite high these days, so it’s normal for kids to be a bit rebellious. I also have a sister who tends to stir things up when stressed... And by the way, that couple earlier didn’t settle your bill, four servings of refreshments, two pots of tea, and a few fruit plates, all total to a hundred and eighteen..."
Lin Xue was instantly fuming, "I’ll definitely hang that kid upside down when we get back, and this time it must be head down!"
Seeing Lin Xue’s demeanor, one thought came to my mind: my own sister is still the best; I never got hung up when beaten as a child...
We spent the whole day playing wildly outside, as initially intended: putting aside all sorts of bothersome issues and wholeheartedly allowing ourselves to relax. But, observing closely, the ones who enjoyed the most fun today were actually the pair of animals tagging along; the fox was all right since she usually went out to play on her own, but Little Crow was quite clingy. She preferred days when she could wander around with the family, something that hadn’t happened in a long time.
Upon returning home, however, we were met by almost a whole room full of grievances... well, expectedly.
Anyway, as soon as I pushed open the door, a small shadow pounced at me, this little guy, agile like a monkey, spun half-circle around my neck and sat steadily on my shoulder, eagerly tugging my head, "Why didn’t you take me! Why didn’t you take me, why didn’t you!"
I had no idea how she honed such eloquence; normally, people would think a while before saying something like that three times in a row, yet the little doll uttered it so readily.
While skillfully blocking the little guy’s harmless joint techniques on my shoulder, I carried her to the living room, then started distributing all the things we bought today, one by one: Pandora and Visca got candies and "World War History," Little Baobao got crystal beads and glowing toys; for Qianqian, we bought a large plush bear, a new set of kitchenware for my sister, a collection of classic horror movies both domestic and foreign for Anwina—she could treat them as lifestyle films. I also bought a new hairpin and a small bag of fertilizer for Lilina, although she didn’t seem to like the second gift much, appearing rather displeased when I told her she could sprinkle it on her head while sunbathing next time...
Not to mention everyone else’s stuff, picking gifts for everyone in the family involved nearly circumnavigating the entire old town area, indicating that having a house full of these peculiar beings could be quite overwhelming. Their needs in life might span the entirety of human civilization. Had it not been for Lin Xue holding me back, I might’ve almost brought some incense paper back for Anwina...
"Hey, where are our things?" As the group of girls joyfully grabbed their gifts, Bingdisi suddenly popped up from nowhere, "Don’t say there’s none, when this one gets mad, she can..."
I casually pulled out another big pile from my personal space and stacked them on the tea table, "You guys share it yourselves."
Honestly, I did spend a bit of effort figuring out what to buy for the Tiaozi Five, because I really had no idea what these omnipotent immortals might lack. Eventually, I reasoned: even though they lack for nothing, they still go out shopping every day with great excitement, proving that their spiritual needs far exceed their material ones. Translated plainly, it means they’re simply bored, so you just have to get them something to keep them occupied...
Therefore, Bingdisi and Monina received brushes for their wings, Lin got a fire-breathing dragon model (bought for thirty yuan in a toy store, there was even a more upscale dragon model available, but I dared not buy it as it depicted a warrior slaying a dragon), and Yelsen received a big box of white wax...
"Why are my gifts so strange?" Yelsen asked inexplicably, holding the big box, "Moreover, it says Lunan 4S Shop... isn’t this for cars?"
Monina casually knocked Yelsen’s chest, "Bro, this is for polishing your armor... you’re at home wearing it like a can every day, you’re practically becoming one with your armor."
"Where’s Uncle Kenser?" Watching the bustling "loot-sharing scene," I suddenly realized someone was missing and curiously asked.
"He’s dealing with some trouble in the world he’s managing," Bingdisi replied casually, "went back to clean up the mess for his believers." (To Be Continued.
