Chapter 164: Spar With Oshan — Part 2.

Sid reached out and gently touched her shoulder.

"Evelise didn’t die because you were incompetent," he whispered. "She died because she chose to die. And I think, deep down, you knew it."

Oshan’s composure cracked. Her head dropped, and she admitted in a choked whisper,

"Yes. I knew. When she stopped fighting and allowed the zombie to bite, I felt... I felt the same release. I wanted to die with her."

She looked back up, unshed tears blurring her vision.

"But even in death, I was there. I was in the mansion, frozen by her bedroom door, waiting for her to come home. I was fulfilling my duty even as a mindless corpse."

Sid squeezed her shoulder gently.

"Exactly. You fulfilled your duty to the very end. You are the best personal guard any master could ever want."

A soft ping echoed in Sid’s HUD, breaking through the afterglow of the fight.

[Task Completed: Spar With Me.]

[+20 Bond Points gained]

[Something special has been triggered...]

[Bond Points Doubled!]

[+40 Bond Points Gained]

[Current BP: 40/100]

[Heart Status: Violet]

Sid glanced at the notification, a genuine sense of accomplishment washing over him.

"A double score... from twenty points to forty. Damn," he muttered, smiling. "That’s the highest bond boost I’ve ever gotten. This giant zombie really does trust me."

He exhaled slowly, surprised by how warm it felt in his chest.

"Well... damn. That meant more than just a workout."

He looked at Oshan, who was still recovering, her massive chest heaving gently. He felt a profound satisfaction that went beyond the game mechanics.

"That was good, Oshan," Sid said, his voice earnest. "Seriously. That spar was the best workout I’ve had since the apocalypse started. But it was more than just physical activity."

He paused, collecting his thoughts. "It was... a way to actually talk with someone whose entire existence is based on silent protection. Someone who relies on her body to save the people she cherishes."

Sid stepped forward, smiling warmly.

"I loved sparring with you. I’ve never fought someone like this before."

Oshan’s pale, icy gray face instantly flushed a deep, bright pink, contrasting sharply with the sweat and the strands of wet, light blue hair sticking to her cheeks. She was deeply touched by the sincere praise.

"L-Loved it?"

She echoed, her voice wobbling slightly. Her wet light-blue hair clung to her face and neck, making her look strangely innocent despite her earlier ferocity. Sid felt his own cheeks warming, and he quickly cleared his throat and looked away before he embarrassed himself.

"A-Anyway!" he blurted, waving a hand to cut the awkward tension. "Do you get enough sleep around here? The cabin’s tiny compared to the mayor’s mansion. I’m taking the couch, Evelise has the room. I never asked: do you get enough sleep? Where... where do you sleep?"

Oshan, grateful for the topic shift, answered immediately, her voice still slightly breathless.

"I sleep very well, Master. I do not require much rest, but I rest beside Lady Evelise in her bed."

Sid blinked. "You... you share the bed with Evelise?"

"Yes, Master," Oshan confirmed, her eyes shining with simple happiness. "It is actually very nice. I never had the chance to sleep so close to her in the mansion. The bed is large enough for both of us."

Sid burst out laughing, quickly covering his mouth. He imagined the absurdity: Oshan’s huge, giant frame dwarfing Evelise’s small figure... He suddenly saw them like a mother and a small daughter in that massive wooden frame.

"That’s nice. Actually... now that I think about it, the bed really is big enough for two people. Evelise in that oversized bed next to you— she must look like your tiny daughter. You two are like... a giant wolf and a baby bunny."

Oshan blinked. The comparison made her posture sharpen, her protective instincts turning immediate.

"If Lady Evelise is a baby around me... then I shall guard her even more."

Her voice carried a warmth Sid didn’t expect, gentle, but fiercely devoted. The afternoon breeze drifted through the clothesline, carrying the scent of sun dried fabric, clean sweat, and quiet contentment.

For a brief moment, Sid felt something he rarely felt in this apocalypse... peace. The exhaustion from training, the easy laughter, the quiet companionship... it all blended into a rare moment of warmth that made him exhale deeply.

"Man... this feels good.... Yeah, this life, it’s not bad at all."

The moment of serene appreciation was brutally interrupted. The clean afternoon breeze, so refreshing just moments ago, was quickly overpowered by a familiar, acrid smell. A thick, oily plume of smoke began curling out of the basement hatch and drifting from the vents.

Sid threw his head back and groaned.

"Of course. The moment of peace is over. Back to the toxic air."

He groaned, staring at the smoke with betrayed eyes. Oshan sniffed the air once, her expression solemn.

"Lady Evelise is working very hard. This means her experiment is... strong."

Sid pinched the bridge of his nose. "It means she’s one spark away from blowing up this whole house."

He took a deep breath and surveyed the surrounding area. He realized that their earlier fires, combined with the general wear and tear of the cabin’s existence, meant their firewood supply was dangerously low.

"Argh. Right... Oshan cooked and ignited the whole supply of wood. Alright, duty calls! I need to resupply it now. If we want to survive the night and keep the psycho chemist warm, we need to cut more."

Oshan perked up immediately, her eyes shimmering with purpose.

"May I assist, Master Sid? Woodcutting... that is a task of strength and utility! I can lift anything. I can carry entire trees if needed."

Sid blinked at her, then laughed despite himself.

"I... don’t need entire trees, but yeah. Help would be great. Just try to remember that we want firewood, not deforestation."

Oshan straightened as if receiving a royal command.

"Then let us gather wood. Lady Evelise cannot be disturbed, so we shall work quietly."

They ventured into the edge of the woods. Sid, using a small, scavenged axe, managed to fell a medium sized pine. He then began preparing it for cutting. Oshan, however, approached the task with an absolute lack of moderation.

"Master, allow me to lift."

Oshan insisted, her eyes shining with determination. Before Sid could even hook his own hands under the heavy trunk, Oshan simply lifted the entire tree— the butt end, the limbs, the whole massive thing... off the ground and carried it like a large shoulder bag. Sid stared, slack jawed.

"Okay, okay, excellent lifting!"

Sid managed, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.

"Now we cut it into manageable pieces, remember? Short pieces for the fire."

They laid the massive trunk across a thick, sturdy stump Sid was using as a cutting platform. Sid began chopping with the axe, aiming for precision and even length.

Oshan took the spare, heavy machete they used for clearing brush. Her first swing was a perfectly accurate, powerful chop aimed exactly where Sid indicated. But her power was so overwhelming that the blade didn’t just cleave the log; it bit so deeply that it also split the cutting platform stump beneath it.

"Oshan— holy hell! You just cut the table!"

Sid yelled, half amused, half-terrified.

"My apologies, Master."

Oshan said, examining the cleanly severed stump.

"I shall use less force next time."

A cold wave of realization hitting Sid: if she had decided to flatten him during the spar, he wouldn’t even be a memory now.

"If I wasn’t fast enough during the spar, I’d be a pancake right now..."

Oshan smiled proudly, misreading his horror. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"I am happy I did well, Sir Sid. I want to be useful to you and Lady Evelise."

"Yeah," Sid breathed, shaking his head, "that’s... exactly what I’m afraid of."

Despite the chaos, they made incredible progress. Sid worked strategically, pointing out which trees were most suitable and managing the logistics, while Oshan provided the inhuman strength and efficiency. Sid saw how valuable Oshan was becoming; the two of them working together drastically reduced the sheer servant work he had been doing.

Oshan, meanwhile, was completely fulfilled, driven by her dual purpose: serving Evelise and serving the Master who saved her.

By the time the sky turned purple, and the forest dimmed into silhouettes, they had built a towering stack of firewood tall enough to warm the cabin for days. Sid dropped onto it with a relieved grunt.

"Done... finally. My arms are going to fall off."

Oshan lowered the last thick log and wiped her forehead with her wrist.

"Lady Evelise will be happy. She prefers warmth when she works."

Sid laughed tiredly. "Yeah, she’ll definitely be warm... since she’s turning the basement into a personal volcano."

A new wave of dark smoke spilled out from the basement door as if responding to his complaint. Sid glared at it like it insulted his ancestors.

"No way. She’s still at it?"
