70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 29: Sharing Fortune Together
"Why do you care about her? Now, you just sit here and do your homework for me." Xu Mumu pressed the little guy onto the bed, took out the books from the rattan basket under the bed, and placed them on the cabinet, letting him do his homework.
"Do homework again? It’s not like I can’t do it tomorrow." Xu Minglei said with a mournful face, and his thoughts about Xu Xue were immediately thrown to the back of his mind.
"Have you already forgotten what you promised me just now?" Xu Mumu said calmly. This little brat needed some discipline; if she took her eyes off him, he’d be up to some mischief.
"Got it." The little guy lowered his head and obediently started doing his homework. He really wanted to learn his elder sister’s skills.
Seeing the little guy behaving himself, Xu Mumu was ready to head out. "I’ll come back to check your homework later. If you get it all right, I’ll ask Mom to get you something delicious." Before leaving, Xu Mumu reminded the little guy, just to make sure he took his homework seriously.
This little brat—if you want him to behave, you have to dangle a piece of meat in front of him to motivate him.
"Something delicious? What is it?" Xu Minglei’s eyes brightened significantly.
"You’ll find out when the time comes," Xu Mumu said with a cheerful smile, then closed the door to the room.
Walking out, Xu Mumu glanced at the busy people outside. Her third aunt’s face didn’t look good; her third uncle had already been called into the room of the old couple. Xu Mumu had keen ears and could partially hear what they were saying.
"Mom, where are you going?" Xu Mumu saw Li Caixia, who was munching on some pumpkin seeds from who knows where, about to head out.
"There’s nothing to do at home, so I’m going to find your Aunt Cuihua for a chat. Mumu, come, let’s go together." Li Caixia held her daughter’s hand, ready to leave. Staying home meant the old lady would soon have her doing chores, unlike the second and fourth households who were clueless.
"Mom, I won’t go. You go ahead." Xu Mumu’s mouth twitched. Her mother and Liu Cuixia were definitely the most gossipy people in the brigade, better not get involved.
As the mother and daughter were talking, Xu He came out angrily. He immediately said to Lin Juan, "Wife, take Dongbao, we’re heading back."
"Oh, what’s going on, old third?" Li Caixia looked at Xu He excitedly. Xu Hai and the old couple followed closely behind, their faces also not looking too good.
"None of your business." Xu He glared angrily at the excited Li Caixia, growing increasingly disgusted with the big family. He blamed his elder brother for going to their parents to talk nonsense. The parents originally promised to give some money, but now they only gave a little bit. What good is that? It’s all elder brother’s fault.
Lin Juan had quickly brought Xu Dongbao over. Xu He grabbed his wife and child’s hand and left.
"Old third, old third." Watching them leave without hesitation, Madam Chen called out several times but couldn’t stop them.
"Old lady, let it go." Old Xu sighed. For the sake of a house, old third had practically gone mad, insisting that they hand over all the family’s savings to secure that house.
Old Xu still had more trust in his eldest son’s words. Now that he thought about it, he felt that old third might have been deceived.
"That idiot, if that money gets wasted, I’ll break his legs." Madam Chen said angrily, lamenting how her son was grown and no longer listened, ignoring common sense.
"We’ve given what we should, the rest is up to old third. If that house is real, there’s no loss. But if it’s fake..." Old Xu paused in his silence.
The money they gave wouldn’t even cover a fraction of the house. In the end, old third still had to find money on his own. Something might be done through his father-in-law.
During mealtime, the atmosphere at the table was somewhat heavy, but Xu Mumu’s family seemed to eat quite happily.
After dinner, while it was not yet dark, Xu Mumu checked Xu Minglei’s homework.
Probably because there was something delicious hanging as bait, seeing that the work had been revised several times, it was all correct. Xu Mumu was quite satisfied.
Entering Xu Hai’s couple’s room, Xu Hai had already handed two apples to the old couple. Li Caixia, holding a kitchen knife, cut the big apple into five equal parts, each precisely as if pre-measured. Unexpectedly, her mother had such skills.
"Wow, apples! Where did they come from? Surely not bought by third uncle; they wouldn’t spend on such expensive fruit." Xu Minglei whispered. Having snacked with Li Caixia since childhood, he knew to be sneaky with snacks.
"Your sister brought them back. Look how capable she is, you should learn from her." Li Caixia said proudly.
"Mom, I’ll definitely listen to my sister from now on." Xu Minglei immediately promised. Lately, he’d had a lot of good stuff thanks to his sister. He’d learned that sticking with her meant good food, while disobedience would lead to consequences, just like that crushed rock.
"That’s more like it." Xu Hai said contentedly. Seeing his children so good and capable, Xu Hai felt intensely proud.
Although the apple, divided into five, wasn’t much, the family’s attitude of sharing joys and sorrows still made Xu Mumu very satisfied.
After eating the apple, everyone felt delighted and full of hope for life.
"Big sister, tell me secretly. Does Mom have more apples?" Xu Minglei, following Xu Mumu out of Li Caixia’s room, whispered mysteriously in her ear. Since his sister brought the apples, she surely knew.
"Of course there are, but only if you behave and listen to what I ask you to do." Xu Mumu glanced at her little brother, who seemed to have quite a few new tricks up his sleeve.
"Don’t worry, sister, I’ll definitely behave." Thinking of the delicious food, Xu Minglei felt energized. Apples were so much better than the wild fruits on the mountain and he was still savoring them.
"That’s good, go wash up." Xu Mumu said with a smiling face.
As Xu Mumu was taking Xu Minglei to wash up, she accidentally made eye contact with Xu Xue again. However, both quickly looked away, seeing no need for interaction.
Once everything was settled, Xu Mumu returned to her room, still pondering the situation with the third family.
She had reminded them of what she could. If third uncle insisted on getting involved, there was nothing she could do to stop him. Just hoping that when third uncle was in debt, he wouldn’t hit up the old home for help.
There might be trouble by then, possibly even causing a family split. If that were to happen, the old couple wouldn’t just watch the third family shoulder so much debt; they’d secretly help out. If the family split, there probably wouldn’t be much money to divide.
