A Mate For The Last Lycan-Chapter 55: CONVERSATION IN THE EARLY MORNING
Chapter 55: CONVERSATION IN THE EARLY MORNING
"You are well aware that because of your defiance and your threat to the King, he became cautious of you, right?" Bryden frowned at the alpha, who looked nonchalant after he enraged the king, as he made him wait for three hours straight just to talk to Zuri.
Dacre must still have some self preservation for not tearing down Khaos' bedroom door and dragging him out of there.
At some point, Khaos must have instilled some deep fear in him, preventing Dacre from crossing Khaos' limits. And the alpha was right, despite his status as the king, he was wary of him.
"If you keep doing this, you will lose control over him. What is your plan?"
"He will only become reckless by trying to one up me." Khaos walked down the hallway with Bryden biting off his ear, as he complained all the way to the carriage. "That kind of person is the easiest to manipulate."
"Mabel will not agree with this sudden change in plans." Bryden shook his head. "She will not approve of that woman either. She was someone else's woman. You don't deserve a second hand woman."
"It's so rich coming from you." Khaos gave him a look and Bryden avoided his gaze. The beta's destined mate was someone else's mate before. Bryden literally killed the man to free her, because he abused his destined mate, and now they were together with a child on the way.
It was Bryden who killed the elder from River Creek pack two years ago, since his destined mate was one of that old bastard's playthings.
"You are different, Khaos. You are..." He stopped himself and didn't continue his words, as the alpha entered the carriage. The conversation died down just like that.
Right now, they were waiting for Zuri to finish her conversation with King Dacre before they could leave for the capital city together.
The sun had just risen in the east, and its warmth made the autumn morning feel less chilly, though it would be freezing cold in the winter.
Meanwhile, inside Khaos' study room, Zuri was facing the king. This would be the first time for her to meet with him after what happened.
"Do you realize that you could be with your father and brother right at this moment if it's not for my mercy?"
'The audacity.'
'He will not be here if it's not for you leaking out the information about the coup.'
'He would have been buried in the ground or left to choke on his own blood.'
Zuri took a deep breath, she needed to shut down those voices in her head. She looked at King Dacre and then smiled.
"Yes, and I am grateful for your wise judgment in recognizing that I was not part of any of that."
Dacre smiled. "But, you know that a traitor's bloodline should be cut off completely, right?"
"In this case, that's questionable. Because if the bloodline needed to be severed completely..." Zuri lifted her head and gave Dacre the sweetest smile. "Alpha Xaden is actually your brother." She then added, emphasizing the words. "By blood."
Dacre laughed when he heard that. "You are smarter than I gave you credit for."
That didn't sound like a compliment in Zuri's ears, it sounded more like an insult because he questioned her intelligence.
But, whatever... she wanted to know what this king's intention was to call her for this private meeting, where there were only the two of them.
"Do you know why I called you here to talk with me alone?"
"No."
"Humor me."
Zuri wanted to humor him by attacking him like she did to those two guards, but of course, she had more control over her intrusive thoughts than that night.
Khaos thought she would have a nightmare or some kind of breakdown after her first kill, but as it turned out she was fine. And as shameful as it sounded, she had to admit that... she felt quite satisfied after killing those guards that wanted to assault her. The world wouldn't miss them.
"I don't know, maybe you need me for something." Zuri didn't need to think hard about this, because in a world where people only saw the benefits others could bring and used each other for profit, this was common sense.
Most of the time, interactions resembled business deals and Zuri was quite good at it.
"Yes. You are right. I need you for something." Dacre walked closer to her and she had to reign in her intrusive thoughts. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
The conversation lasted for fifteen minutes and it ended with...
"This will be between you and I. You will have my protection. Are you able to understand what
I am saying?"
"Yes."
In short, he wanted the deal between them not to be known by anyone, especially Khaos, but the first thing that Zuri did when she entered the carriage, where Khaos had been waiting for her, was to blurt out her conversation with the king.
"Basically, he wanted me to spy on you. Very classic." Her father had asked her to do the same and Zuri felt like she was going through the same thing all over again.
Khaos looked at her with amusement evident in his eyes. "I think he also told you not to say anything about it to me? Or did he forget that part?"
"No. He told me not to tell a single soul, especially you."
Khaos almost laughed at this point. "But, the first thing that you did is telling me the whole conversation in detail."
Zuri shrugged her shoulders, she took off her shoes and stretched out her legs on the seat. This could be considered as an inappropriate act. The way she behaved was unacceptable. But, she was comfortable enough to do it in front of Khaos and the fact that he wasn't fazed by it made her happy. It was a feeling that didn't come to her so often.
"In my defense, he should have asked if I'm willing to cross over to his side, but he didn't."
