Chapter 111: Making Tallow (2)

Theo was shocked by Serena’s words. Soap making. It was such a rare skill to have that only cities and major tribes had access to such a resource. Yet Serena, a beastwoman from a small tribe, knew how to make soap.

How in the world was that even possible?!

Had one of her beast fathers been from a big tribe perhaps and knew the method of soap making? No, that couldn’t be. The clans which knew how to make soap wouldn’t just let anyone know their methods.

That knowledge was their lifeline, a way for them to gain many precious resources in this world. Letting some random beastman know such knowledge would destroy what they built.

"Yes, I’m making soap..." Serena shrugged like her words were nothing. "Well, I’m attempting to do it anyway. I have some methods... But I have never really done it before."

Theo pursed his lips. "And how did you come about this knowledge?"

"Someone once told me it..." Serena answered vaguely.

"Was this someone also the same beastman who has you doing all sorts of weird things?" Theo questioned with narrowed eyes.

"You could say that..." Serena mused. Theo opened his mouth to ask more questions, but Serena added, "Look, it’s not that I don’t want to tell you... It’s that I can’t."

Because none of it would make sense. How would she explain that she was a soul from another world and her goal was to get back so she could get revenge on the guy that killed her. And the only way she could get back was by completing missions.

Besides, she wasn’t sure how Theo would react to this information. What Kiro would do if he learnt his real sister was dead. That she was using his sister’s body for her own gain.

Theo ran a hand through his hair and let out a sigh. "Fine... If it’s like that, then I won’t ask you questions. But please tell me that you’re at least safe."

As long as Serena promised that she was fine, Theo could handle her keeping her secrets. He knew he was probably overstepping, trying to act like her real beast husband, but a part of him couldn’t help it.

Serena had growth on him and he enjoyed the lifestyle they had created in this village. Sure, she sometimes drove him crazy with some of the strange things she got up to.

But it was also what he liked about her. He could never predict what she was going to do and it made things fun. Exciting even.

"I’m safe, I promise." Serena responded. "Because everything I’m doing is to make my life easy."

"Alright then..." Theo let out a small smile. "As long as you’re not in any trouble... I guess I won’t delve deeper into this."

Serena returned his smile with a faint one, not sure if she could say that she wasn’t in any trouble. She then quickly turned away and murmured, "I need to check on the tallow."

She hurried away to the pot without giving Theo a chance to speak, the awkwardness choking her. As she moved, she spotted Kiro near the firewood, playing with some of the sticks and stones lying around.

Good thing he didn’t hear us talking... Serena murmured to herself.

Because Kiro was the one person that could send her house of lies tumbling down.

Serena smiled at the light yellow liquid in the wooden bowl. It wasn’t much, but she was still proud of herself for finally making tallow. It had taken three rounds of cooking to finally get it right.

The first batch had burnt, leaving Serena to strap it from the pot and attempt another round. She added more water in the second attempt, hoping it would stop the fat from burning.

But she added a bit too much water and started to look more like a fatty soup than anything. So, she landed up adding some vegetables and leftover meat to it to make an actual soup for dinner.

No point in wasting it.

Thankfully though, the third batch had gone right and while it did take some time for most of the fat to melt, at least now she had some tallow. All that was left was to let it cool down until it turned solid.

Then came the next test - making sure it was odorless. If it wasn’t then she had done something wrong. If it was, then she had successfully made tallow and could add it to her subspace along with the wood ash she had collected.

"Kiro, make sure you don’t hit this." Serena warned the cub as she placed it next to the other bowls.

The cub glanced at the bowl she had set down and covered before he yawned, "Okay..."

It was night time now and Serena was finishing up for the day. And once things settled down, she’d head into her subspace again to deal with another problem - moving that beehive.

She’d be meeting the Council tomorrow and wanted to have a proposal for them by then along with the selection of plants she’d gathered. Everyone was busy, so she needed to make the most of the meeting.

Kiro soon went to sleep and Theo and Serena hung out for a bit more before they called it a night. Once Theo was sleeping, Serena headed into her subspace.

She went straight for the farming guide, turning to the livestock section to find the part about beekeeping. After reading through everything, she found blueprints for a new hive which would allow them easy access to the honeycombs.

Problem was there was nothing on moving the bees into a new hive. Which left her with one option. She needed to get that damn book. It was her best option to solving this problem.

Otherwise, the village would deal with the hive themselves and she’d lose this rare opportunity to introduce beekeeping to the village. As well as her regular source to honey and beeswax.

Thus with a sigh, Serena murmured, "Liz, let me buy that book."
