A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 117: Vessel
Moments later, Serena found herself back in her subspace. A way of nausea hit her, the sudden blackouts from moving between realms getting to her. She gulped down to stop the urge from throwing up and attempted to steady her breathing.
Once she was back to normal, well got her breathing steady at least, her eyes scanned for Liz and found it waking from its daze too. Serena couldn’t help, but pinch herself, unable to believe all that had happened.
It was too much for her mind to take.
She had met a god. An actual god. And not just any one too, but the ruler of this world. Her mind could barely accept it, let alone the fact that said god had given her the system’s goals directly.
Developing this world was understandable, something she could do if she had the right knowledge. But creating vessels for other gods? Just how in the hell was she meant to do that?!
Not to mention the countless other questions she had for this so-called god. Serena rubbed her forehead in frustration, her head buzzing from everything.
She understood nothing.
Why did that damn god have to disappear before answering all my questions?! Serena muttered to herself, glancing over at Liz. Guess I’ll have to ask the snake all my questions instead... 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"Li-" Serena started to call out, only to find herself stopping.
Was it really right for her to call the system Liz? Especially after knowing that the original owner was somewhere inside it. Wouldn’t it be better to call it by its actual name?
The system seemed to sense her dilemma and said, "You can still call me Liz. I prefer that name... Makes it feel like I’m a new person really."
"You’re a snake." Serena couldn’t help, but point out.
"If you wanna get technical, I’m really a shape shifting system." Liz hissed out. "But that’s besides the point. We have something more important to discuss."
"Right..." Serena sighed, annoyed that she was getting sidetracked. "So about what happened..."
"You really met the Beast God in one of his hidden realms and if you don’t believe his words about the gods, then ask Merinda to fact check them for you." Liz stated. "Her bloodline is the last descendants of the original priestesses that served Asdea. She’ll have the same stories and power to back it up."
Serena frowned at the system’s words. "But I thought the Beast God removed the other gods’ power."
"He removed their power, not their blessings." Liz retorted. "Any of the priest and priestess clans that had blessings before the disaster kept their abilities. Similar to how monsters stayed monsters even after the power was removed."
And now Serena was even more confused by it all. She rubbed her forehead again and asked, "What’s the difference between power and blessings then? And how was it that their power was removed, but not everything else?"
"Well the gods gave their raw power in hopes of making beastmen stronger. It’s basically what the gods use to work their ability. Like how food gives you energy to do something. Power is like that. It’s pure energy." Liz explained. "Blessings are more of an actual ability. Think of how some of the Beast God’s priests can do those contract vows.
"It’s an ability to tie two or more beastmen in a vow where death hangs in the balance. Of course, blessings normally come at a cost too. Beastmen from those blessed bloodlines have to give up something to activate their ability in a special ritual. Also they have to go through years of training before the ritual."
Serena pursed her lips at the words, taking a moment to process them. So gaining a blessing was more complicated than just coming from the right bloodline. The person had to go through training, likely to prepare their body for the power of the blessing.
Meanwhile, power that was given to everyone was the raw energy used to fuel the god’s abilities. So, when they gave immortal power to mortals, if it didn’t kill them because they lacked the strength to hold it, it warped them.
Like adding too much water into a cup and it cracking or shattering into pieces.
And those that did make it through that had uncapped power to warp into whatever they wanted. Rather than being restricted to one ability like the priests and priestesses were.
Guess that was what the gods were trying to do, not realizing what negative impacts it would have. That some would use their power for horrible things.
There was still one question lingering on her mind, so she asked, "Do you know what Merinda’s ability is and what she had to sacrifice for it?"
"It’s best you ask her yourself since I can’t say for such, but my guess is that her ability is foresight." Liz mused. "Likely gave up a few years of her life for that one. After all, Asdea was the goddess of time and change, so most of her priestesses had that ability."
Serena frowned at that. "How can such a powerful ability exist in such a weak village?"
"The foresight normally has to have something offered for a specific question." Liz explained. "And even then it’s only limited to certain things like season changes, rainfall and so on and can only be done during specific times. Plus many don’t believe in the other gods. So their priests and priestesses have to hide."
The festival Merinda was holding suddenly came to mind. Could it be the offerings were a way for her to use her ability of foresight? Perhaps see how the village would fare the cold season.
It would explain how they survived for so long. However, with one thing answered, another question came to mind. Foresight meant Asdea could definitely see into the future then. So wouldn’t she have seen the outcome of her doing what she did?
"Liz, Asdea could see into the future right?" Serena asked, wanting to confirm her thoughts. The snake nodded its head, so Serena asked, "Then why..."
"Why would she do what she did? It’s the biggest mystery of them all." Liz sighed. "The Beast God has no idea what she was thinking and is hoping to ask her that by the time she revives."
No wonder he tasked her with making a vessel for the gods. Not that it explained why the gods needed a vessel in the first place. But she figured their original bodies must’ve been destroyed when they were punished.
Speaking of which...
"Okay... But how exactly am I meant to create their vessels?" Serena questioned. "Because that’s what she’ll need once she’s unsealed right?"
"Correct." Liz nodded its head. "And you’ll be creating the vessels like one creates a normal child... You don’t need me to explain that process do you?"
"What?! No!" Serena shook her head before she ran a hand through her hair.
This god wanted her to have kids?! So he could create a vessel for the sealed gods. Was he out of his goddamn mind?! There was no way in hell she was doing that.
"If you refuse, your soul will be removed from this body and you’ll cease to exist." Liz added, noting the horrified look on Serena’s face. "And someone else more willing will take up your place to fulfill the Beast God’s missions."
Right... Her being here was a matter of luck. If she refused, the Beast God would just find another. And then she’d forever lose her chance to get back to her world. Her chance at revenge.
But she also couldn’t have kids only to sacrifice them for some gods’ revival. What kind of monster would that make her? She had to draw the line somewhere.
Try righting her wrongs in some way. And this was definitely not the way to go.
"I can’t..." Serena closed her eyes, dreading the feeling overwhelming within her. "I can’t do it...."
"If it makes you feel better, it’s the god’s soul that’ll be born into your child’s body." Liz said with a heavy sigh, not liking the circumstances either. "You’ll just have to raise them and have them trained under a similar training priests undergo, so they can reclaim their spot as gods when they become adults."
Serena opened her eyes once more and gazed down at the snake. "I don’t know..."
Even if that was cleared up, she still needed to complete the process. Meaning she’d have to choose some poor sod to help her create three vessels for some sealed up gods.
Why couldn’t that damn god do this himself? He created them once. Couldn’t he just do it again? Why involve her in this mess?
"Mission Triggered." Liz’s eyes suddenly flashed. "Create the sealed gods’ vessels and raise them to adulthood. Someone will be sent to help you-"
"Someone sent to what?!" Serena interrupted.
"Let me finish!" Liz hissed. "A priest of the Beast God’s order has been given the task to help you on this mission, his blessing allowing you to carry the gods’ vessel. Complete this mission and you’ll be granted anything you desire."
