A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 77: Traps
"That being said..." Serena continued. "I do have a few things I’d like to run by the Council right now."
The plump beastwoman raised an eyebrow before she nodded her head, "Go ahead."
"Well the first thing would be about setting traps up around the forest for the cold season." Serena stated. "Rootless beastmen have already been spotted in the forest and I think some traps will help add some defense to the village. We can get them before they come close to the village and cause harm.
"Not to mention it’ll lower the chance of any of the guards being injured. The only drawback will be that everyone within the village will need to be made aware of where the traps are. I suggest we set a few around the forest and a bunch along the wall perimeter. That way if they do make it to the wall, there will be some kind of defense."
"Hmm... That doesn’t sound like a bad idea." A stocky beastman mused. "But how do you plan on making these traps?"
"We can go the simple route and dig deep holes, fill them with sharp, pointed sticks and have them covered with leaves and tall grass, so the rootless beastman walks over it thinking its solid ground only to fall into the hole." Serena explained calmly. "The sticks will impale their body as they fall, killing them quickly."
It was one of the oldest traps and quite simple to build. The rabbit beastmen even had a great ability for digging, so it would work well for them. They could set up plenty along the wall perimeter, specifically where there were blind spots.
A few of the Council members went pale at her words and one even exclaimed, "That’s quite.... gruesome."
"It is, but the other option is to let them break their limbs from the fall and die a slow death." Serena shrugged. "At least with the wooden sticks, they won’t suffer too much."
Granted bleeding to death with punctured organs wasn’t exactly painless either. But it was better than possibly starving to death if someone didn’t come to save you in time.
That was the other risk of not having the wooden sticks there. If there were multiple rootless beastmen around, they could try helping their fellow comrade. Of course, that would open the chance of them learning about the traps.
But that was the risk of having them around. Still, seeing the traps at work could also deter them from trying to attack the village in fear of ending with the same fate.
"I suppose that makes sense." Elder Samuel finally murmured, breaking the short silence in the room. "Shall I have some of the off duty guards get to work on it?"
"Go ahead." The stocky beastman answered. "Just have a way to mark where the traps are. We’ll then let everyone know to look out for the markings so they don’t hurt themselves."
"If you need help with the traps, I can assist." Serena added. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
"Alright." Elder Samuel nodded his head in understanding. "I’ll be sure to ask you if I need any help."
They soon moved back to Serena’s development plan with Serena giving them a rough idea of her fortress idea complete with large scale farming.
She still needed to get that city planning guide to better develop her idea, but it didn’t hurt to get the rough idea to the Council. After all, they wanted to mainly know what she planned and allowed her more freedom with the details.
After chatting for about an hour, Serena soon left the hut with Elder Samuel. The sun was going to set soon and she wanted to return before then. She bet Theo was probably wondering what the heck she was up to.
As they were walking, Elder Samuel suddenly said, "I’m glad to see that the Council approved this. A few don’t trust you because they see you as an outsider, but most see the vision in your plans. Even if it scares them a little."
Serena could understand that. They probably thought of her as a strange female, giving up a chance to live in a city for a weak village. But she had good reason to stay here.
And thankfully, her ambitious plan outweighed their suspicion of her. Well, sort of. It was clear that her needing approval for every step was their way of making sure she wasn’t going to screw the village over.
Which was a fine enough compromise.
She wasn’t a total expert on everything and would definitely need their knowledge for certain parts. Like Healer Kai agreeing to look into the farming part. That would make or bust their plan to become a part of a new trade route.
"I’m glad they’re happy to go though with this." Serena finally said. "I know it’s probably strange that I’m coming forward with all these ideas, but I’m doing it because I want to see this village grow. It’s a great place, much better than the one I grew up in."
And she meant both the original owner’s tribe and her original home. Because she only served the empire to survive. It would never put its people first. Only itself.
Serena had seen that plenty of times before.
Elder Samuel looked like he wanted to say something, but before he could Kiro ran over to them. When the cub got to them, he asked, "Are we heading home, Sister?"
"We are." Serena nodded. "It was nice seeing you again, Elder Samuel."
The elderly rabbit beastman gave her a small smile and murmured, "Likewise. I shall see you tomorrow. Have a good evening."
"Same to you." Serena greeted as Kiro waved goodbye to Elder Samuel.
The rabbit beastman then headed off to his hut. Once he was gone, Serena headed back to her hut with Kiro holding her hand. They found Theo dozing outside the hut and Serena went to check on his injuries.
Once she was done, she finally turned her attention back to the system notifications she had received.
