A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 78: System 2.0
Serena covered the strange feeling object in her hand and glanced over at Theo and Kiro. The tiger beastman was back to snoozing, rest apparently helping with healing his wounds.
Meanwhile, Kiro was playing around the firewood pile, the place quickly becoming his favorite part. Seeing that both were distracted, Serena slipped inside the hut and opened her hands again.
She glanced down to find a small blue lizard in her hands. Everything inside her screamed to chuck the creature away, but she resisted the urge, biting her lip to stop herself from making a noise.
The lizard smiled at her and exclaimed in a robotic voice, "Hello Host! I’m System 2.0, an improved version of your system. ^*^&fgre*H found that you were not using the system to its full potential and sent me to better guide you through your journey."
So someone was responsible for sending her here. But who exactly? Some divine being maybe. She couldn’t quite catch the name, it sounding like a bunch of static noise to her.
"Um... could you tell me who sent me here?" Serena asked in a low tone, testing her luck.
"Error!" The lizard’s eyes flashed red for a second, looking like a siren. "You are currently not privy to such information."
Serena frowned. Well it was worth a try. At least I know someone sent me here now.
Although she did have her suspicions. This just confirmed it. Shaking her head, Serena turned her attention back to the lizard in her hand.
"What has improved within the system?" Serena questioned. "Do I get access to more things?"
"Yes, however, your level is currently too low to access some features. You can unlock them once you’ve reached a certain level." The lizard answered.
"Does that include information?" Serena then asked.
The lizard had said that she wasn’t privy to that information. Which in her eyes meant she had to reach a certain level to gain access to such information.
"Yes." The lizard nodded its head. It was silent for a moment before it added, "Please enter a name for the system?"
"A name?" Serena furrowed an eyebrow. "Why would I need to give you a name?"
"So that I may bind myself to you." The lizard responded. "Article two, paragraph six states that all improved systems must receive a name from their host-"
"Alright I got it." Serena interrupted. "Liz it is then."
The lizard seemed to frown at her words. "Liz. Is that because my form is a lizard right now? I’ll have you know, I can take different forms."
As it spoke, a flash of light blinded Serena, making her close her eyes. When she reopened them a moment later, she found herself staring at some kind of furry, blue rodent.
Serena pursed her lips and muttered, "I named you Liz because it’s short for Elizabeth. That was the name of my first android helper. You should be honored to have such a name."
That android helper had cost a fortune and helped her though much during her training. So much so, Serena cried when the android models were recalled due to a hacking incident.
"Oh..." The system murmured. "Liz it is then... System is binding to host."
The rodent’s eyes flashed and Serena took this chance to ask another question, "Why did you shift into a lizard if you can appear in any form?"
"It was the easiest form to shift into." Liz answered.
Suddenly Kiro’s voice called out, "Sister! Are you here?"
Serena wrapped her hands around the system and glanced over at the doorway, yelling back, "I’m inside the hut. Do you need something?"
"No one but the host can see and hear me." Liz declared, trying to get out of Serena’s grip. "Are you trying to kill me with this grip?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
There was another flash of light and something cold slithered out of Serena’s hands and up her arm. She glanced over at Liz, who had shifted into a small, blue snake. Thank goodness she didn’t have a fear of snakes.
Because she doubted she would react well to Liz wrapped around her upper arm if she feared snakes.
Kiro soon appeared by the hut doorway and exclaimed, "I’m hungry."
"I’ll heat up some of the stew then." Serena said, moving to the door.
She headed over to the firepit, started a new fire to heat up the leftover stew from earlier. She made extra in case anyone got hungry later on and wanted something to eat.
As the stew was heating up, Serena asked Theo if he wanted any and the tiger beastman nodded his head. So, she went back inside to grab their bowls to serve the stew. As she worked, Liz chatted her ear off, making comments about everything.
At first, Serena listened to her every word in case the system dropped some important information, but she quickly realized she just somehow landed up with a chatterbox of a system.
It made her wonder if she should’ve agreed to the update. Because this was not what she was expecting. She thought the system update meant improved features. Not something she wanted to strangle.
Finally Serena got sick of Liz and muttered under her breath, "Do you have a mute feature?"
"How rude." Liz exclaimed in horror. "First you don’t respond and now you’re telling me to shut up... Fine, I won’t chat."
With a pop, the system disappeared from sight and Serena couldn’t help, but let out a sigh of relief. She went back to getting dinner ready and once they were finished she took Kiro to the river for a quick bath.
Theo already used a bucket of water and fur cloth to wash, having to be careful with his injuries, so would just watch Kiro for her.
Once they were all done cleaning up, they settled for the night. Only when both Theo and Kiro were asleep did Serena escape to her subspace to have a better conversation with her new system.
The only thing was as she called out to Liz, there was no response.
