Side Story 7: More Than Friends (II)

Even though it was a long distance, Esther and Noah recognized each other at a glance.

โ€œItโ€™s the real Noah.โ€

As Esther paused and watched, Noah leaped off the horse and approached at a swift pace.

The distance between the two quickly narrowed.

Noah stopped slowly as he came right in front of Esther.

Esther, who unexpectedly and suddenly faced Noah, stood stiff in surprise, unable to decide how to react.

โ€œAre you not going to welcome me? Iโ€™m sad.โ€

With a mischievous grin, Noah blinked a few times and spread his arms wide.

โ€œI miss you. A lot.โ€

Then, without hesitation, he hugged Esther.

Esther was no taller than Noahโ€™s shoulders, so she fit snugly into his chest.

โ€œNoah!โ€

Esther, whose eyes widened like rabbitโ€™s in surprise, pushed Noah away.

However, Noah was very satisfied with a face that seemed like he would finally live. freewe(b)novel.com

โ€œWhat happened? When did you come?โ€

โ€œJust. As soon as I landed at the port, I ran here.โ€

โ€œWeird. The letter you sent just arrived today?โ€

โ€œOops. The Berkin Kingdom is so closed that security is severe. I barely got permission to send it, but it must have taken a month just for the inspection.โ€

โ€œIs that why I didnโ€™t receive a letter for so long?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. There was no way to send them because most forms of contact are blocked.โ€

The corners of Noahโ€™s eyes drooped. He looked like he had been unjustly scolded.

โ€œI see. I was worried because you hadnโ€™t contacted me even though itโ€™s been eight months.โ€

โ€œHow worried were you?โ€

When Esther muttered in a somewhat sullen voice, Noahโ€™s eyes became crescents as he bent his waist slightly with a smile.

Thanks to this, their eye level became similar.

Noah gazed into Estherโ€™s eyes without blinking.

It was fine for a moment, but when this lasted longer, Estherโ€™s face slowly turned red.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ Why are you staring so closely?โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t seen you for a long time. Let me see you.โ€

Even as Noah answered, he kept his eyes on her like it was natural, so Esther only bit her lips.

โ€˜Nothing has changed.โ€™

She was seeing him after eight months, but he was the same as before he went.

Even though she thought it was all right, somehow she felt a little longing for Noah, whom she hadnโ€™t seen in a long time.

โ€œEsther.โ€

Perhaps he had seen enough? Noah grinned and straightened his back.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou have become more beautiful.โ€

It wasnโ€™t the first day or two that Noah spoke this way, but for some reasonโ€ฆ Esther felt like her heart was fluttering more today.

โ€œYou have become even more handsome.โ€

โ€œReally? I feel good.โ€

Noah and Estherโ€™s gazes intertwined, and they started laughing.

Maybe it was because they hadnโ€™t seen each other in a long time, but just looking like this kept them smiling.

โ€œCan I come a little closer?โ€

Noah asked in a rather cautious voice, scratching the side of his head.

โ€˜Itโ€™s already close enough?โ€™ Esther tilted her head, wondering why he bothered to ask.

โ€œWhy are you even asking?โ€

โ€œAll right, then Iโ€™ll come closer. You canโ€™t say anything else later.โ€

Actually, Noah wasnโ€™t talking purely about physical distance.

Although the answer was vague, Noah smiled brightly after hearing it.

Completely unaware of Noahโ€™s heart, Esther made an equally radiant smile.

โ€œBut Noah, I think you grew taller again.โ€

Esther reached up and measured the height difference between them.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been the same for two years. It seems to be gradually going down.โ€

โ€œAre you making fun of me?โ€

โ€œNo. Itโ€™s cute.โ€

Esther slightly glared at Noah. No matter how she looked at it, he seemed to be making fun of her.

โ€œBy the way Esther, whoโ€™s that person just now?โ€

Noah asked, glancing in the direction in which the horse Leo rode disappeared.

โ€œYou mean Brother Leo?โ€

โ€œBrother?โ€

As soon as Noah heard Esther call him โ€˜brotherโ€™, his expression turned seriously.

It was because he knew she didnโ€™t call many people โ€˜brotherโ€™.

โ€œYes. He is the son of Marquis Arnimando. The marquis asked me to draw a picture of Leo.โ€

โ€œSince when?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been about two months?โ€

โ€œYou guys look pretty friendly.โ€

โ€œNo, weโ€™re not that close.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re calling him โ€˜brotherโ€™ even though youโ€™re not that close? So far, Sebastian is the only person you call โ€˜brotherโ€™.โ€

When the atmosphere suddenly turned into that of an interrogation, Esther replied in a panic.

โ€œIt happened because we met every week.โ€

โ€œWhat? That guyโ€ฆ Did, did you meet him every week?โ€

Noahโ€™s voice grew shakier before he knew it. He paced around Esther, going round and round, unable to stay still.

The worry that someone had approached Esther while he was gone became reality.

โ€œIs that such a surprise?โ€

โ€œOf course. He kept hanging out by your side while I was goneโ€ฆโ€

A giggle leaked from Estherโ€™s lips at the jealousy-filled words.

โ€œItโ€™s simply painting. Donโ€™t overthink.โ€

Esther lightly patted Noah on the back as he whimpered like a dejected puppy.

โ€œFrom now on, I wonโ€™t let him touch me. He canโ€™t even stroke my hair.โ€

Noah erased the traces of Leoโ€™s touch on Estherโ€™s head by stroking over it.

โ€œWhen will the painting be finished?โ€

โ€œIt should have been over. But Brother Leo asked me to complete it slowly.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€˜I knew it.โ€™

Noahโ€™s face hardened, realizing that Leo was being sneaky.

โ€œPlease finish the painting as soon as possible.โ€

โ€œHow can I do that?โ€

โ€œThen can I come and watch when you draw him?โ€

โ€œHow can you?โ€

Esther looked quizzically at Noah, who was acting like a child today.

โ€œDonโ€™t keep saying weird things. You should talk about your trip. Oh, we canโ€™t do this here, letโ€™s go inside.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I canโ€™t do that. I have to go right away. I just came to see your face for a moment.โ€

Noah had a strong desire to enter, but there was a lot of work waiting for him in the Imperial Palace.

โ€œItโ€™s been a while, but youโ€™re going right away?โ€

Disappointment crept up in Estherโ€™s heart, and she poked the ground with her toe for no reason.

โ€œInstead, Iโ€™ll finish it as soon as possible. See you again in a week.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the day Iโ€™ll stop by the temple.โ€

โ€œGood. Then shall we meet at the temple?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

After fixing an appointment, Esther and Noah faced each other again, smiled, and made a promise, interlocking their pinky fingers.

โ€œIโ€™ll be going.โ€

โ€œOkay. Goodbye.โ€

Sadness dripped from their eyes as they looked at each other until the very end.

โ€œItโ€™s nice to see him after a long time.โ€

Entering the mansion, Esther smiled happily as she muttered to herself.

For some reason, she couldnโ€™t hide the laughter that kept leaking out.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

After Noah arrived at the imperial palace, he moved busily without a break.

He communicated what he had learned while interacting with the Berkin Kingdom, and brought goodwill gifts and messages from the king.

As it was a very closed kingdom, this friendly exchange was of utmost importance and significance to the empire.

Time passed quickly, and it had been four days since he returned. After finishing a meal with his familyโ€ฆ

โ€œUgh, Iโ€™m tired to death.โ€

Noah got only two hours of sleep each night, so his eyes were puffy.

Finally returning to his room, he laid his tattered body on the bed.

โ€œYou worked hard. I have no plans for tomorrow morning, so please get a good nightโ€™s sleep.โ€

Andrew, Noahโ€™s imperial aide, spoke politely and turned off the lights in the room before leaving.

But Noah, who laid as if fainted, jumped up and grabbed him.

โ€œAndrew, youโ€™re very sharp when it comes to imperial news, right?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. Information is power.โ€

โ€œThen find out about Leo of the Marquisate of Arnimando.โ€

As soon as Leoโ€™s name came out of Noahโ€™s mouth, Andrew grinned.

โ€œAh, Lord Leo? There is nothing else to investigate. I already know everything there is to know.โ€ ๐Ÿ๐—ฟ๐ž๐ž๐˜„๐ž๐—ฏ๐ง๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐ž๐—น.๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐ฆ

โ€œYou do? Say it.โ€

โ€œYes. Lord Leo is currently an expert knight of the imperial knights. Being an expert at the age of 20 is the youngest record in history.โ€

โ€œAn expert at 20? Is he that talented?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s to the point of being called a genius. When Your Highness was young, you begged to learn the sword like himโ€ฆ Donโ€™t you remember?โ€

โ€œHmm, I donโ€™t remember.โ€

After hearing Andrewโ€™s words, Noah could sort of remember hearing that a great swordsmanship genius had appeared when he was young.

Noah recalled the scene of Leo standing with Esther.

Even from a distance, he could tell he had a nice face, but on top of that, he had good skills.

โ€œAnd what else?โ€

As his chest tightened, Noah angrily unbuttoned his shirt, which was fastened up to his neck.

โ€œHe is very popular in society. I heard that there are no young ladies who donโ€™t like him.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWill it be the same for Esther?โ€

When only a beautiful story came out, Noah lost a bit of confidence.

โ€œWhat? Are you talking about Lady Esther? It canโ€™t be.โ€

But Andrew didnโ€™t understand Noahโ€™s question.

This was because, in the eyes of Noahโ€™s aides, Esther and Noah had already gone far beyond being friends.

So, to think about it like this was just odd.

โ€œWhile I was away, that Leo went next to Esther.โ€

Andrew sighed, finally realizing the reason for Noahโ€™s bad mood the past few days.

โ€œYour Highness, it seems to me that Lord Leo is not the problem.โ€

โ€œThen what is the problem?โ€

โ€œThe problem is that neither of you are doing anything.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean? Please tell me in detail.โ€

Noahโ€™s ears perked up. He wondered if Andrew could offer a solution.

โ€œIt has been six years since Your Highness and the lady have known each other. Have you ever conveyed your feelings?โ€

โ€œYes, of course I did.โ€

โ€œReally? How did you do so?โ€

โ€œI told her honestly that I like her.โ€

โ€œWhat did Lady Esther say?โ€

Noah, who had been replying triumphantly, paused for a moment. Then, his voice slowly faded.

โ€œEsther saidโ€ฆ she likes me too. But just likeโ€ฆ her brothers.โ€

โ€œAhโ€ฆ Ah.โ€

Andrew let out a loud sigh and lowered his head.

โ€œYou should have said it wasnโ€™t like that.โ€

These days, even young children were said to be dating, but Esther and Noah were worse than children in this matter.

โ€œOkayโ€ฆ Then, when was this?โ€

โ€œFour or five years ago? Itโ€™s been a while. I donโ€™t even remember anymore.โ€

โ€œOh my god. Thatโ€™s why you two are still friends!โ€

Andrew hit his forehead when he saw Noah struggling to recall when exactly the confession was made.

Ame: All right, for my own sanity and sleep, Iโ€™ve made peace with how Esther will probably never have a female friend. CUE the jealousy and badump badump badump moments! LETโ€™S GO GO GO GO!
