Chapter 75: Apologised

When Lara’s eyes blinked open, the first person they landed on was Curtis.

And the expression on his face was filled with worry.

"Hey," he said softly. She blinked, trying to clear the residual blurriness in her eyes.

"Hi," she croaked back. Her voice was raspy and her body felt like lead.

"How are you feeling? Should I get to the doctor?" he asked. Lara shook her head and took a deep breath before she spoke.

"You can call the doctor later. Right now, we need to...talk," she managed to push out.

Curtis narrowed his eyes on her.

"Absolutely not, Lara. We will have all of our discussions later. When you are better. Right now, you need to save your strength," he stated.

His voice was firm, and resolute. It left no room for contradiction.

Curtis was almost at the door when Lara spoke again.

"I am so sorry," she said. Her voice was lower than a whisper, but they drifted into Curtis’s ears nonetheless.

He froze in his steps.

Lara went on.

"I am sorry. I was horrible and I slept with you because I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist me. I used your feelings against you and that was a terrible, terrible thing to do. I like you a lot, and you are a good person. But sometimes, my heart flutters so randomly at the things you do. You make me...feel a lot of feelings and I am so confused and I am sorry but I just...I miss you. I could not bring myself to eat and I just...you need to forgive me. Please."

Her words were infused with so much remorse and sincerity.

Curtis ran a hand through his hair and walked back to her. He sat down beside her and took her hand in his.

"I am not mad at you, Lara. You did nothing wrong. I am not offended," he said softly.

Lara shook her head, and tears streamed out of her eyes.

"Then why did you leave? You didn’t pick my call, you refused to acknowledge my messages. I...I was worried," she said.

Curtis cursed himself inwardly.

"I am sorry for not picking your calls. I was...I’ll admit that I was a little bit annoyed. I was hurt and I felt...used. I left because I wanted to give you some space to figure out your feelings. I shouldn’t have left," he responded.

"Yes. Yes you should not have left. I missed you so much that it was hard for me to breathe."

Curtis squeezed her hand gently.

"I’m here now."

She nodded, and the constant ache in her chest lessened considerably.

"Promise to stay with me until I am able to sort out my feelings? They are messy and confusing right now, but I’ll be fine. I’ll figure it out, I promise."

An ache Curtis wasn’t aware he was carrying was slightly lessened. He nodded at her words, promising to be patient with her.

The doctor came in to check up on her, and Curtis stayed with her all through.

When they were both alone again, Lara spoke.

"I saw Tolu today."

Curtis’s jaw tightened at those words. That woman seemed to be everywhere, despite his warning. He had explicitly told her that he didn’t want to see her anywhere around him.

Yet she had appeared before his wife. Again.

His anger flared up. Tolu Greg was stubborn and stupid and she was actively looking for his wrath.

Lara squeezed Curtis hand, bringing him back to her. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"She said some... things. Tolu is a very crazy person, I know you will find a way to deal with whatever lies she comes up with, but I cannot help but worry. What if...what if your reputation is damaged?" she asked.

Fear made her voice tremble, and Curtis’s brows furrowed into a frown.

"What did she say, baby? What is she going to do?"

Lara took a deep breath before speaking.

"She said she is going to sue you for sexual harassment if you don’t give her her job back."

Curtis froze.

Sexual harassment?

His anger exploded and boiled over, spreading rapidly across every inch of his body.

If Tolu filed and sued him for sexual harassment, Curtis knew he was going to be in a shit load of trouble.

He would eventually win the court case of course, it wasn’t as though she would have any evidence to back up her dubious claim.

But the damage would have been done by then. Curtis tried not to imagine what the headlines of the media would look like. Hell, his reputation would take a huge hit, and his Father was going to get disappointed again.

Curtis knew that he couldn’t allow that to happen.

"You’ll deal with her, right? I don’t know what she wants or why she’s being so... difficult. But I seriously do not want her to do anything stupid again. Rumors like that would be devastating," Lara concluded.

Curtis leaned down to kiss her gently on the forehead.

"It’s fine, baby. Thank you for telling me. I’ll deal with it. Nothing is going to happen," he stated firmly.

Under his tender gaze and loving touch, Lara’s fear lessened. She nodded, her tense body instantly relaxing at his words.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Curtis kissed her on the forehead again. Lara drifted off to sleep, and Curtis watched her to be sure that she was deeply gone.

When he was absolutely certain that nothing was going to wake her except it was an extremely loud noise, he took a step out of the ward.

Then he dialed a contact. To deal with Tolu, Curtis knew he had to work with someone who knew her intimately.

Someone he could bend to his will, someone who still had some sort of authority over the woman.

"Send me his contact, Lazarus," he ordered his bodyguard.

His phone vibrated a moment later, and without wasting any time, Curtis dialed the number.

The man picked up immediately.

"Hello, this is Mike Blake. Who is on the line and how can I help you, please?"

A small smile played on Curtis’s lips.

"Mike. Meet me at my office tomorrow morning. Don’t be late," he said and hung up.

Mike should be able to handle the situation, and if Mike turned out to be useless, Curtis might have to resort to his last option.

And that would be an unpleasant thing to do.
