Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 155: Bridging the Distance
Delphinia stood in front of the full-length mirror, adjusting the hem of her blouse for what felt like the hundredth time. Her fingers trembled slightly as she smoothed out the soft fabric, her mind still occupied by the conversation she’d had with Evander the night before.
"A sleepover at your parents’ house? You’re telling me this now?" she had exclaimed, crossing her arms as she glared at him.
Evander, sitting lazily on the bed, had only raised an eyebrow. "What’s the big deal? It’s just my parents."
"That’s exactly the point," she huffed. "Had I known earlier, I could have prepared more."
Evander chuckled, clearly amused. "Prepared what? We’re not going to a royal ball, Delphinia. It’s just a casual visit."
Delphinia had sighed in frustration. Men really didn’t understand the importance of making a good impression. And now, as she glanced at her suitcase packed neatly on the bed, she still felt uneasy. It wasn’t just about bringing the right clothes—it was about presenting herself properly, showing respect, and proving she belonged in the Walton family.
Her gaze flickered to the shopping bags resting beside the suitcase. Thank god she had thought ahead. The gifts for her in-laws had been prepared long ago, tucked away carefully for this exact moment. If she hadn’t? She would probably be spiraling into even more panic than she already was.
She reached for one of the bags, peeking inside to check everything again—just to be sure. She let out a breath, pressing her lips together. Would they like them? Would they see the effort she had put in? She could only hope.
It was just a small but meaningful gestures. At least Evander had mentioned Julian would be there too, which made her feel slightly better. She had also picked something for her brother-in-law.
A soft sigh left her lips as she turned to the clock. It was time.
The car ride to the Walton estate was relatively quiet. Evander focused on the road, while Ashton dozed off in the backseat, his little head bobbing slightly with each bump. Delphinia watched the passing scenery, her thoughts filled with anticipation.
Delphinia shifted in her seat, her fingers unconsciously twisting together in her lap. This was her first time going to the Walton estate.
Not just visiting—but living there.
Even if it was only for a short amount of time, the thought made her stomach twist. The Waltons weren’t just any family. They carried weight, influence, and a reputation that demanded perfection.
The estate was breathtaking. As their car approached the grand wrought-iron gates, they swung open effortlessly, allowing them onto the long driveway lined with towering trees. The mansion loomed ahead—elegant, pristine, and exuding wealth in a way that was almost intimidating.
"Still nervous?" Evander asked, glancing at her as he parked the car.
Delphinia pressed her lips together before nodding. "A little."
Evander reached over, giving her knee a reassuring squeeze. "You’ll be fine."
She wasn’t so sure.
The moment they stepped inside, they were greeted warmly by Elaine. Evander’s mother was as graceful as ever, her smile warm and inviting.
"Oh, look at you," Elaine gushed, immediately pulling Ashton into a hug. "I swear you’ve gotten taller since I last saw you!"
Ashton giggled, enjoying the attention, while Delphinia offered a polite smile. "It’s good to see you again, Elaine."
Elaine turned her attention to Delphinia, taking her hands gently. "Darling, welcome." Her gaze then landed on the shopping bags. "And what’s this?"
Delphinia handed her one of the bags. "Just a little something I thought you might like."
Elaine’s eyes lit up as she peeked inside. "Oh, you have such wonderful taste, Delphinia. You always know exactly what I love."
A small wave of relief washed over Delphinia at the praise. At least Elaine was easy to please. But just as she was about to relax, a familiar figure appeared in the doorway.
Victor Walton.
The air shifted immediately. Unlike his wife, Victor had always been more reserved, his cold exterior making it difficult for Delphinia to gauge what he truly thought of her.
"Father," Evander greeted, his tone neutral.
Victor merely nodded before his sharp eyes landed on Delphinia. She straightened instinctively, schooling her expression into one of quiet politeness.
"Good evening, Mr. Walton," she said, offering him the other shopping bag. "This is just a little gift for you."
Unlike with Elaine, Delphinia knew she couldn’t be on a first-name basis with Victor Walton just yet.
With Elaine, it had been easy. The woman had been warm, welcoming, and had insisted she call her by her first name right from the start. But Victor? He was different.
The sharpness in his gaze, the way he carried himself—it was clear that respect was something he expected, not something freely given.
She kept her expression composed as she held out the shopping bag, waiting for him to accept it. Would he appreciate the gesture? Or would he see it as an unnecessary attempt to win favor?
Either way, she had done her part.
For now, "Mr. Walton" felt like the safest option.
Victor took it without much reaction, his gaze flicking inside before he muttered, "Thank you."
That was it. No warmth. No further acknowledgment. He barely spared her a glance before shifting his focus entirely to Ashton, his entire demeanor softening in an instant. "Come here, boy."
Ashton grinned and ran straight into his grandfather’s arms, chattering about school and the latest stories he had read. Victor listened with an attentiveness he had never once shown Delphinia, making her feel, once again, like an outsider.
She lowered her gaze, gripping the hem of her blouse. It shouldn’t bother her. She knew winning over Victor Walton would take time. But knowing it and feeling it were two different things.
A firm arm wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her closer. Evander. His silent support grounded her, reminding her that she wasn’t alone in this. He leaned in, murmuring just for her, "Give it more time."
Delphinia nodded but remained quiet.
She wouldn’t feel at ease until she was fully accepted by Victor Walton. And that, she knew, was still a long way off.
