Chapter 92: Now of all times?

"Do as you wish," Kith said quietly. "If you decide to leave, I’ll take care of Didi for you."

Finch stared toward the cave, lost in thought.

Should he stay?

Even though the little female had said to pretend that night never happened—that she and the cubs had nothing to do with him—could he truly walk away from them?

More than an hour passed before the match inside the cave finally ended.

The cubs were panting from exhaustion, but their eyes shone with excitement.

Playing ball was so much fun!

The phoenix males were equally exhilarated. Even Odian had shed his usual dignified, restrained priestly demeanor. For a brief time, he had simply been himself.

In the end, the Egg Cubs Team won by one point.

The losing team looked regretful—but still delighted.

Nina handed Yinny, Didi, and Odian each a lollipop. "These are called lollipops. They’re today’s prize!"

They were specially made nutrient candies from the system—safe for cubs.

She unwrapped two and fed them to Yinny and Didi.

The little ones gripped the candy sticks and licked happily.

So sweet! So tasty!

Odian and the others followed suit, carefully unwrapping theirs.

The moment Odian tasted it, his eyes lit up.

Sweet. Pleasant. Unexpectedly delightful.

Yes—High Priest Odian was officially a sweet lover.

He carefully saved the remainder of his candy to savor slowly later.

Nina picked up the remaining egg babies. "You haven’t hatched yet, so Mama will save your prizes for you. For now, I’ll reward you with a kiss."

She kissed each egg gently.

The egg babies wobbled happily.

We love Mama’s kisses!

Yinny and Didi scampered over for more affection. Nina laughed and kissed each of their foreheads.

Odian suddenly found the lollipop in his mouth less sweet.

Another kind of reward seemed far more tempting.

The night passed in laughter.

The next morning, Odian quietly summoned Ridan and the others outside.

"The lollipops Nina gave you yesterday," he said calmly. "Hand them over."

Ridan and the others reluctantly surrendered their remaining candy.

Odian confiscated them all.

Nina’s rewards—letting you have one was already generous.

The phoenix males pouted but dared not protest.

They liked the candy too!

At least leave them one!

If they had known, they would have finished them yesterday.

After washing up, Nina was led outside by Ridan.

He pointed to a pile of prey nearby. "Lady Nina, it seems those two males hunted this yesterday. What should we do with it?"

Nina glanced toward where Kith and Finch usually hid.

"Return it to them."

Ridan carried the prey back.

Kith lowered his gaze and silently took it.

From then on, Nina received prey and animal hides every day—but Kith and Finch never showed themselves. They deliberately remained hidden.

She left everything untouched.

Only after she and Odian departed would Kith and Finch emerge from concealment.

They would look at the undisturbed offerings, unable to hide their disappointment.

One morning, Odian suddenly sensed a surge of powerful black witchcraft energy.

"Nina," he said gently, "I need to step away for a bit. Can we depart later today?"

She nodded. "Go take care of it. We can leave whenever."

"I’ll return soon."

With that, he took several phoenix warriors and flew off.

Ridan and the others began cooking outside the cave. Because of the wind direction, they moved farther away to prevent the smoke from drifting inside.

This cave was long and narrow. Nina and the cubs slept in the deepest part.

With nothing pressing to do, she went inside to check on them.

Yinny and Didi had just awakened. When they saw her, they smiled sweetly.

Her heart melted. She scooped them up and showered them with kisses.

At that moment, only Nina and the cubs were inside the cave.

She was about to prepare milk when the ground began to shake violently.

The cave trembled.

[Host, earthquake! Run!]

Nina immediately gathered the cubs in her arms and dashed toward the exit.

But stones began crashing down ahead, blocking her path.

"Little Bun, is there anything to protect us?"

The cave was collapsing rapidly.

[There’s a temporary protective barrier. Or you can purchase a reinforced load-bearing structure.]

"Give me both. Choose for me."

Double insurance felt safer. If she couldn’t escape, she would hold out until Ridan and the others rescued them.

Outside, Kith felt the tremor.

When he saw the cave collapsing, he didn’t hesitate.

He shot forward like a gust of wind.

Ridan and the phoenix warriors were just about to rush in when Kith reached the cave first.

Inside, he frantically searched for Nina.

Then he saw it—a massive boulder falling directly toward her. His pupils shrank. His heart seemed to stop.

Without hesitation, he lunged forward, shielding her and the cubs with his body.

Nina was just about to deploy the barrier when a flash of white covered her. A muffled grunt sounded overhead.

Then countless stones crashed down.

In moments, they were buried.

The tremors gradually ceased.

Beneath the rubble, Nina lay protected under Kith’s body.

Her emotions churned.

"Are you alright?" she asked anxiously.

"I’m fine," Kith replied, voice tight. "You? The cubs?"

She checked. Yinny and Didi were unharmed.

"We’re okay."

"Good. Don’t be afraid. I’ll get us out."

Gritting his teeth against the searing pain in his back, Kith used his powers to begin breaking through the debris.

Outside, Ridan saw the collapse and shouted in panic.

"Lady Nina!"

The phoenix warriors frantically began clearing stones.

Odian returned just then—he hadn’t found the source of the black witchcraft and had rushed back.

The sight of the collapsed cave froze him.

He searched desperately for Nina—but she was nowhere to be seen.

For the first time in his life, Odian felt true fear.

He flew to Ridan, face dark as storm clouds. "Where is Nina?"

Ridan’s voice trembled. "She... she was buried inside."

Odian struck him aside in fury. "I told you to watch her! This is how you watched?"

Ridan fell to the ground, ashamed. "It was my failure."

Odian turned toward the rubble, his heart gripped so tightly he could barely breathe.

"Nina! Nina!"

He tore at the stones with all his strength, calling her name.

"I’m here!" Nina shouted back.

Relief flooded him.

She was alive.

"Are you hurt?" he called urgently.

"She’s fine for now," came Kith’s deep voice from within. "Hurry."

Odian focused and accelerated his efforts. At last, light pierced through the debris above Nina.

Soon Kith’s white form emerged.

Finally, the last stones were cleared.

Odian rushed forward and pulled Nina out. The moment she was free, he wrapped her tightly in his arms. His grip was fierce, almost trembling.

"Thank goodness you’re safe... thank goodness..."

She gently patted his back. "I’m alright."

The cubs, squished between them: We’re not alright—we’re becoming sandwich filling.

After a long moment, Odian stepped back, suddenly self-conscious.

Nina turned to Kith and handed him a bottle of medicine.

"Thank you for saving us."

He accepted it quietly. "No need. It was my responsibility."

Her expression was complicated, but she said nothing more.

After a short rest and a meal, they set off again.

Kith continued following at a distance.

By midday, they landed and began preparing lunch.

Suddenly, a pack of mutated beasts burst from the underbrush, surrounding them.

At the same time, a group of cloaked beastmen with black wings appeared in the sky above.

"Kill all except the female," one of them ordered coldly.

With a wave of his hand, the beasts and cloaked figures advanced.

At that critical instant, a crisp cracking sound echoed.

Crack.

Nina froze.

She looked down at the egg in her arms.

No way.

Now of all times?
