After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 100: Guess How Much You’re Worth?
Eliza Sutton sneered, "Did I tell you to go make trouble for Sherry Caldwell?"
"I..." Amelia Sutton was speechless.
It was true. She had gone after Sherry Caldwell out of sheer frustration.
Ever since the scandal of Mae Sheffield being caught in bed with another man erupted across the city, Amelia’s engagement to the Hughes family had been on thin ice. To make matters worse, the Sutton family’s construction project on Mount Sable had run into trouble.
Not only had the Lockwood Group donated their land for a martyrs’ cemetery, but even the banks had started calling in their debts. Harrison Sutton was at his wit’s end, and the massive Sutton Group was teetering on the brink of collapse.
Mrs. Hughes, who already disliked her, began to treat her with open contempt. She publicly moved Sherry Caldwell into the Hughes family home, and Sean Hughes started spending all his time by Sherry’s side.
Amelia Sutton had been pampered and spoiled her whole life. She couldn’t possibly endure this, so she confronted Sherry Caldwell directly.
Sherry Caldwell ended up falling down the stairs and suffering a miscarriage!
Amelia Sutton quickly regained her bravado. "Even if you weren’t the one who ordered it, Sherry Caldwell showing up is still your fault! Don’t think I don’t know! You teamed up with her to steal Sean from me! You black-hearted bitch! I’ll kill you!"
Like a woman possessed, Amelia flailed her arms and lunged at Eliza. Her sharp nails flashed as she aimed straight for Eliza’s face.
’As long as I ruin Eliza’s face and make her hideous, Shane Lockwood will despise her, and Sean won’t be seduced by her anymore!’ A vicious light flickered in Amelia’s eyes.
Just then, a foot slammed into Amelia’s stomach. She stumbled backward uncontrollably and fell to the ground with a THUD.
Amelia shrieked in pain, cursing, "Eliza Sutton, you dare hit me?"
SLAP—
Eliza slapped her across the face. "Are you certain now?" she said coolly. "Not only do I dare, but I’ve already done it."
"You! Eliza Sutton, you bitch... AARGH!"
Eliza grabbed Amelia by the collar and slammed her against the wall. She leaned in close, watching the panic in Amelia’s eyes, and then a smile spread across her face. "Amelia Sutton, why can’t you ever learn to be smart? Didn’t I tell you before? To be a good little girl. No one likes a girl who isn’t good. See? You just had to disobey, and now you’re about to lose your precious fiancé."
"My dear sister, care to guess what would happen if Sean Hughes really did call off your engagement? For the sake of the teetering Sutton family, do you think Harrison Sutton would hesitate to marry you off in another alliance? My marriage to ward off bad luck brought in three hundred million. If he arranged a ghost marriage for you, you’d probably be worth even more."
Staring at the cold light in Eliza’s eyes, Amelia suddenly felt a chill creep over her. Endless fear filled her heart, but she blustered, "Don’t you try to scare me! I’m Dad’s favorite daughter! He would never arrange a ghost marriage for me! Besides, Sean and I have been engaged for five years! We have a deep bond. There’s no way he would call it off!"
Amelia’s voice was loud, but under Eliza’s cold smile, her words lost more and more of their conviction.
"Let go of me! I’m done talking to you!" Amelia shoved Eliza away and stumbled out of the room.
As she rounded the corner, Amelia glanced back instinctively, only to see Eliza watching her.
She was smiling, but the smile was bone-chillingly cold.
A shiver ran down Amelia’s spine.
’She regretted it now. She regretted it so much. After the kidnapping, she knew Eliza was a lunatic, but she had to poke the bear and provoke her anyway!’
Amelia fled the hospital.
...
「In the hospital room.」
Eva Monroe was in the middle of a very animated conversation with an older woman.
When she saw Eliza walk in, she immediately waved her over. "Over here, come sit."
Seeing the older woman staring at Eliza, Eva raised her eyebrows smugly. "What do you think? My friend’s gorgeous, isn’t she?"
"Not bad at all. How about this: once she’s sorted out her current troubles, you give me a call. I guarantee I’ll introduce her to a good man."
"It’s a deal."
Once the woman had left, Eliza asked, "What was that about introducing me to someone good?"
"A boyfriend, obviously," Eva said. "Aren’t you and Shane Lockwood about to get divorced? You’ve got to snag a cute, young pretty boy while you’re still young and gorgeous."
"..." Eliza said, "Isn’t that a little premature?"
"Not at all. You have to start scouting for good prospects early. Otherwise, you’ll be left scrambling when the time comes, won’t you?"
Eliza rolled her eyes. "I’m so grateful, really. You can’t even behave in the hospital." She poked Eva’s leg. "What happened? In the blink of an eye, your leg’s all swollen like a pig’s trotter."
"It’s nothing much. I just got injured by accident on a variety show."
Ever since she stunned everyone as the opening and closing model at that last product launch, Eva Monroe’s popularity had soared. Her agent quickly lined up variety shows, endorsements, and scripts for her.
"Was it really an accident?" Eliza said. "From what I hear, the script you landed this time is pretty high-quality. Even though you’re only the fourth female lead, the character is very likable. Now that you’re injured, you probably won’t be able to make it when filming starts next week."
The smile vanished from Eva’s face, her expression crumbling. She gave a bitter laugh. "I really can’t hide anything from you. You’re right. This injury wasn’t an accident. Kiara Wynn arranged it. She wanted to destroy this opportunity for me."
"So what do you plan to do?"
"All I can do is focus on healing." Eva scrubbed a hand over her face. "Once I’m better, I’ll find other opportunities. I’m a diamond in the rough—I know I’ll shine eventually."
Eva tried to pump herself up, but inwardly, she was deeply discouraged.
She knew perfectly well that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If she missed it, she feared she would never get another chance this good again.
After all, for a Z-list actress like her who had been struggling for years, landing the part of a likable fourth female lead in an S-tier production was entirely due to the buzz she’d generated as a model.
But that kind of buzz fades quickly. The entertainment industry has the fastest turnover rate. When the hype dies down, who will even remember the name Eva Monroe?
What Eva didn’t mention was that if she failed to seize this opportunity, her father would stop indulging her.
In the eyes of her misogynistic father, a daughter’s greatest purpose was to be married off in a strategic alliance. He had only indulged her "fooling around" in the entertainment industry for the past few years because he figured that if she became famous, she could secure a better match.
"So, do you want to be there when filming starts next week and take part as planned?"
"Of course I do," Eva said, but then quickly added, "But don’t get involved. Eliza, you’ve got enough on your plate. I don’t want you begging anyone on my behalf."
"You think I’m going to ask Shane Lockwood to pull some strings and get the production delayed?"
"Well... yeah."
"It doesn’t have to be that complicated. If you just healed up quickly, you could participate in the shoot without any issues."
"But the doctor said my foot is badly injured. I have to rest for at least a month before I can even put weight on it."
"Eve, do you trust me?"
