Chapter 106: Chapter 106: You’re a Widow Now!

Mrs. Lockwood was hysterical, so the hospital staff didn’t dare restrain her by force.

It wasn’t until Master Lockwood arrived that he allowed them to take Shane Lockwood away.

Mrs. Lockwood was so overcome with grief she could barely stand.

Seeing this, Master Lockwood sighed and said to Eliza Sutton, "Take good care of your mother-in-law."

Eliza Sutton agreed and moved to support Mrs. Lockwood, but was shoved away.

Eliza froze, then hesitantly called out, "Mother..."

"Don’t you call me that!" Mrs. Lockwood shrieked, her voice high and furious. "Eliza Sutton, you explain this to me! Why weren’t you waiting for Shane while he was in surgery? Don’t you know that you bring him good fortune? You left at such a critical moment. Were you bribed? Did you deliberately want his surgery to fail? Yes, that must be it!"

"Mother, it’s not like that. Shane is Emmett’s father and my husband. Why would I want his surgery to fail?"

"Then explain where you went just now."

"I..." Eliza didn’t continue.

She couldn’t say.

Eliza Sutton took a deep breath. "Please, just believe me."

Mrs. Lockwood laughed, a sound of pure despair. "You’ve succeeded. My Shane is truly gone. You’ve gotten your way."

"Mother, please believe me. I have always prayed for Mr. Lockwood to recover," Eliza said, her voice filled with sincerity.

’Her identity had to remain a secret, so she couldn’t talk about what happened in the operating room. After all, Eliza Sutton was supposed to be completely in the dark.’

"Hah!" Mrs. Lockwood sneered and said nothing more, stumbling away.

News of Shane Lockwood’s death spread like wildfire, quickly becoming common knowledge.

The Lockwood Group’s stock plummeted at the news. Having suffered the tragedy of burying his own son, Master Lockwood collapsed from illness. The once-imposing, authoritative patriarch finally revealed his frail and sickly state.

The second branch of the family, whom Master Lockwood had kicked out and forbidden from returning for six months, moved right back in.

Unlike their previous caution, they were now ordering everyone about, acting as if they were the new masters of the Lockwood family.

Mrs. Lockwood turned a blind eye. Shane Lockwood’s death seemed to have drained all the life from her. Only when she saw her young grandson, Emmett Lockwood, would a faint smile grace her lips.

Eliza had seen Mrs. Lockwood stroking Emmett’s face, telling him, "I’ve spoken with your uncle. In a few days, he’ll come to take you abroad. You have to be a good boy over there. No more being naughty, do you understand?"

Fear filled Emmett’s little face. "Grandma, are you getting rid of me, too?"

"What nonsense are you talking about? How could I ever get rid of you?"

"Then why are you sending me abroad? If I go, I won’t be able to see you, or Mommy, or Great-Grandpa... and I won’t see Daddy anymore. Grandma, I don’t want to go abroad."

Mrs. Lockwood’s mouth opened, but what could she say? ’I have to send Emmett away because my son is dead. Without our pillar of support, our side of the family is nothing but a lamb among wolves, ready for the slaughter, with no way to fight back.’

’I’ll be fine.’

’I’m just a helpless, middle-aged woman. At fifty years old, I’ve already lived most of my life. Even if I were to die, it would be no great loss.’

’But Emmett is different.’

’He’s the eldest, legitimate grandson of the Lockwood family, a position of great importance. What’s more, the Lockwood fortune has always been passed down to the eldest heir of the primary line.’

’On top of that, Emmett is incredibly bright. Though he’s still young, he has already shown extraordinary intelligence.’

’An Emmett like that is a thorn in countless people’s sides.’

’When Shane was just in a coma, Emmett was already in constant danger.’

’Now that the sky above our heads has collapsed, I can’t protect my grandson. The only way is to send Emmett away.’

’Nothing is more important than my grandson’s life.’

But she couldn’t say any of this to a child like Emmett, couldn’t explain her agonizing decision.

Besides, to say all this would be to truly admit that her son was dead. She wouldn’t be able to hope for a miracle anymore.

"Grandma, I’m staying. I want to stay here."

"No," Mrs. Lockwood refused firmly, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks. "You must leave!"

Emmett couldn’t help but start crying as well.

Watching from the side, Eliza was at a complete loss. Just as she was trying to think of something to say, Master Lockwood arrived.

Seeing his daughter-in-law clutching his great-grandson, both of them in tears, Master Lockwood couldn’t help but snap, "What are you crying for? I’m not dead yet! Are you practicing for my funeral?"

"Father, I’m not. It’s just... my heart aches," Mrs. Lockwood said as fresh tears fell.

She had been widowed in her youth and had now lost her son. All she had left was this one grandson, who was being watched like a hawk by predators. Her pain was indescribable.

Of course Master Lockwood knew. Seeing his daughter-in-law’s anguished expression, he couldn’t help but sigh. He softened his tone. "I know you’re in pain, but you are Emmett’s grandmother. If you don’t pull yourself together now, when will you? Emmett is counting on you!"

He paused, then added, "There, there. I will protect Emmett. He is my blood as well."

At his words, Mrs. Lockwood’s expression softened a little. "Father, thank you."

Master Lockwood sighed. "We’re family. There’s no need for thanks. Get some rest."

After a few more words of advice, Master Lockwood left. Eliza took Emmett to see him off.

Master Lockwood looked at Eliza and said, "Eliza, you’ve been wronged. Your mother-in-law is distraught. You must be patient with her."

"Grandfather, I know. Please don’t worry."

Leaning on his cane and supported by Butler Lockwood, Master Lockwood left with Emmett.

Eliza returned to Veridian Garden.

As she stepped into the foyer, the room was dark. The maids who were usually there to attend to her were nowhere to be seen. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Eliza felt a prickle of confusion. Before she could speak, a figure lunged at her.

Caught off guard, Eliza couldn’t dodge in time, and the shadowy figure was upon her.

"Gotcha," the man snickered, his voice smug.

Eliza’s brow furrowed instantly. "Fabian Lockwood."

"Who else?" Fabian Lockwood reached out and flicked on the foyer light. He shot Eliza a lewd, disgusting grin. "My dear sister-in-law, you’re finally back. I was dying to see you. Come on, let me have a kiss. There’s no one to interrupt us this time."

With that, he reached out to caress Eliza’s face.

Eliza’s expression shifted, her face turning icy. "It seems I was too polite with you before."

As she spoke, Eliza’s fingers clamped around Fabian’s wrist. With a sudden, violent twist, she threw him to the floor.

Fabian’s head spun, and it felt as if the impact had nearly knocked his organs out of his body.

It took Fabian a long moment to recover. He scrambled up, sputtering with rage. "Eliza Sutton, are you insane? You dare to touch me?! Don’t you get it? You’re a widow now! The kind of life you live in this family from now on is entirely up to me! If you know what’s good for you, you’ll get on your knees and serve me! If you make me happy, I’ll reward you with a few easy days. But if you displease me, I’ll make you learn the meaning of true despair!"
