After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 107: Making Things Difficult
Eliza Sutton looked at Fabian Lockwood’s brazen and unabashedly vicious face, and suddenly, she understood Mrs. Lockwood.
It wasn’t that Mrs. Lockwood was fickle and heartless, nor was she a naturally harsh person. In a place like the Lockwood estate, losing Shane meant that every moment of her own life was now filled with torment.
Previously, Mrs. Lockwood had treated her well because, as the bride who changed his fate, she had caused Shane to wake up. This time, because her ’departure’ led to Shane’s death, the heartbroken mother had nowhere to vent her sorrow, and Eliza became the target.
Fabian Lockwood thought he had scared her. He grinned menacingly and stepped toward her. But just as he took a single step, something slammed into the back of his head with a loud THWACK.
Fabian Lockwood whipped his head around instinctively and saw Emmett Lockwood, his face contorted with rage.
"Emmett Lockwood!" Fabian Lockwood roared, clutching the back of his throbbing head. "You little bastard, you dare hit me!"
"That’s right, I dare! And you’re the one I’m hitting!" Emmett shouted, swinging the baseball bat again and bringing it down on Fabian Lockwood. "This is for bullying my mom! And for bullying my grandma! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!"
Although Emmett was young, as Shane Lockwood’s sole heir, he had received special training. His movements were cunning, and every swing of the bat struck Fabian Lockwood exactly where it would hurt the most.
Fabian Lockwood howled in pain. "Emmett Lockwood, stop it! If you don’t stop right now, don’t blame me for what comes next! You little bastard, you’re really trying to start a rebellion!"
No matter how much Fabian Lockwood screamed and cursed, between Emmett’s frenzied assault and Eliza Sutton’s subtle help, he was being beaten so badly he couldn’t even fight back.
Fabian was beyond furious. "Emmett Lockwood! Eliza Sutton! Go on, act all high and mighty!" he snarled. "Just wait until the Lockwood family belongs to my branch of the family! We’ll see how arrogant you are then. When you fall into my hands, I’ll make you suffer!"
"Looks like Second Uncle wants some more," Emmett said, tapping the baseball bat in his hands, eager for another go.
Fabian jumped in fright, clutched his rear end, and scurried away with his tail between his legs.
"Second Uncle, why are you running so fast? We still need to have some fun!" Emmett yelled after him. This only made Fabian run faster. He wasn’t watching his step and tripped on a cobblestone, falling flat on his face.
Emmett let out a merciless, booming laugh.
Fabian glanced back at Emmett, his teeth gritted. "Just you wait!"
"Hmph."
Emmett rolled his eyes dramatically and slammed the gate to Green Bamboo Garden shut with a BANG.
Emmett told Eliza to take out her phone. He had her set Master Lockwood as the first emergency contact, and himself as the second.
Emmett said, "Mom, in the Lockwood family, Great-Grandpa is the one who calls the shots. If Second Uncle comes to bother you again, call Great-Grandpa. The moment he shows up, Second Uncle is guaranteed to run away, just like he did now. You can also call me. If I get the call, I’ll come right away to protect you.
"Although, I’m definitely not as good at it as Great-Grandpa... or Dad."
It had been several days, and this was the first time Emmett had brought up Shane Lockwood on his own.
He quickly added, "Mom, you have to believe me. I’ll be better than Dad soon. I can protect you well, too."
"Yes, I believe in you, Emmett."
"Thank you, Mom." As he spoke, Emmett’s voice trailed off, and his small face filled with sorrow.
For a moment, Eliza didn’t know what to say.
"Emmett, you must be hungry. How about I make you something to eat?"
Emmett shook his head. "You don’t have to."
Eliza’s face fell with disappointment. "Is Emmett already tired of my cooking?"
"Not at all!" Emmett quickly denied. "I just don’t want you to go to so much trouble."
"Silly boy. As long as you enjoy the food I make, it’s no trouble at all." With that, Eliza went to the kitchen.
Emmett followed her.
Eliza grabbed a small stool and had Emmett sit in the doorway.
She made hand-rolled noodles and prepared some soup dumplings.
Eliza worked quickly, and soon the soup dumplings were steamed and ready.
Eliza mixed a dipping sauce for Emmett. "Quick, give it a taste. See if you like it."
Emmett picked one up and ate it slowly. "It’s delicious."
"I’m glad you like it." Eliza then placed a bowl of noodle soup in front of him. "The broth is made with beef bones. Eat up."
"Okay," Emmett mumbled, eating obediently. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
After watching Emmett finish, Eliza asked, "Are you full? Would you like some more?"
"I’m full," Emmett said. "Dad likes this too. He always acts so serious, but he’s actually a bigger foodie than I am. Last time, you didn’t save any for him, and he actually got mad. He’s so petty. But... even if he’s petty, he’s still my dad. Mom... from now on, can you let Dad eat your cooking, too?"
"Okay. I’ll make extra from now on."
"Thank you, Mom." As Emmett spoke, tears suddenly welled up and fell, splashing onto the table. "Mom... did something happen to Dad? Everyone is saying he’s dead. Mom... do I really not have a dad anymore?"
Eliza walked over and pulled Emmett into her arms. Holding his small, trembling body, her heart ached fiercely.
Eliza took a deep breath and said gently, "Emmett, do you trust your dad?"
Emmett nodded without hesitation. "I do. I trust Dad."
"Then can you please keep trusting him this one more time?"
Emmett looked up at Eliza for a long moment before nodding forcefully. "I trust Dad." Then he asked, "Mom, will you always stay with me?"
"Of course. I’ll always be with you, Emmett."
Ever since Shane’s accident, Emmett hadn’t been able to rest properly. Nestled in Eliza’s arms, he quickly fell asleep.
Eliza looked at Emmett’s small face, still streaked with tears, and her eyes filled with tenderness.
「The next day.」
Eliza Sutton went to the Lockwood Group.
She had just entered the office, not even reaching her desk, when she was stopped by Mr. Walker.
Mr. Walker said with a haughty look, "Designer Sutton, I’ll have to trouble you to go to the warehouse and organize the fabrics today."
Eliza frowned. "That doesn’t seem to be part of my job description."
"Correct, it’s not technically your job. However, Manager Preston noted that you’re new to the design department and not very familiar with the various fabrics. She’s giving you this excellent opportunity to learn. You should cherish it," Mr. Walker said, then added, "Unless Designer Sutton believes she’s so important that she no longer needs to follow her supervisor’s instructions."
This was a heavy-handed accusation. If Eliza wanted to remain a designer at the Lockwood Group, or even stay in the industry, she couldn’t refuse.
After all, no company would tolerate a subordinate who refused to follow orders.
Eliza smiled. "Fine. I’ll go to the warehouse and organize the fabrics."
"That’s more like it. As a subordinate, while skill is important, obedience is equally so. I’m sure Designer Sutton understands a simple principle like that."
After Mr. Walker finished speaking, he turned and left arrogantly, the heels of his dress shoes clicking on the floor.
’Brenda Preston really spared no expense in trying to make things difficult for me. It couldn’t have been easy to get the fabric warehouse into a state like this.’
