Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Who Is That Man?

Seacliff Manor.

Hearing the sound of a car, the servants on duty all came out to greet them.

Mrs. Zimmerman stepped forward, smiling. "This must be the Mistress. You’re so beautiful. I’m the housekeeper of Seacliff Manor. You can call me Mrs. Zimmerman."

Eliza Sutton nodded slightly. "Mrs. Zimmerman."

"You must be tired. Let me take the young master."

Hearing this, Emmett instinctively hugged Eliza tighter, his eyes filled with resistance. He didn’t want anyone taking him away from his mommy.

Mrs. Zimmerman was surprised to see this. It was the first time she had ever seen Emmett so close to a woman.

Before Vivian Forrest went abroad, she used to come to Seacliff Manor often to try and bond with Emmett, but he had only one reaction: outright rejection.

She never expected this bride, who had been married into the family for good luck, to be so cherished by Emmett.

Seeing the surprise on Mrs. Zimmerman’s face, Eliza said, "I’ll take Emmett back to his room to rest."

In the room.

Eliza told Emmett a story as usual. She told him the tale of the seven-colored flower.

Emmett’s large eyes were wide open as he said, "If I had a seven-colored flower, I would make three wishes."

"What three wishes?"

"First wish: I hope Mommy stays with me every day. Second wish: I hope Mommy stays with me today. Third wish: I hope Mommy stays with me every tomorrow."

Eliza was stunned. She had never imagined there would be someone whose every wish revolved around her.

Emmett grabbed Eliza’s hand and asked earnestly, "Mommy, can my wishes come true?"

Meeting Emmett’s expectant gaze, Eliza wanted to nod, but she couldn’t.

She stroked Emmett’s head and said, "Emmett, since I’ve answered to you as ’Mommy,’ you will always be my child in my heart."

Emmett was very disappointed, but he said nothing.

He nestled obediently in Eliza’s arms, the words of that woman from the mall echoing in his ears.

She said his mommy had given birth to a baby before.

No matter how unwilling Emmett was to accept it, he knew what that meant.

’That means, someone else was already Mommy’s most beloved child before I ever met her.’

A sudden, sharp jealousy pierced Emmett.

’Why did that person get to be born from Mommy, to be her most beloved child, while I had to be born from some other woman’s belly?’

After Emmett fell asleep, Eliza tucked him in and left the children’s room.

When she returned to the master bedroom, Shane Lockwood was already there.

He had washed up and was wearing a black silk robe, sitting in his wheelchair.

The robe wasn’t tied properly, revealing a muscular chest and exuding an overwhelming masculine aura.

Shane Lockwood had always been an exceptionally outstanding man.

"Come here. Apply my medicine."

Eliza saw the medical kit placed to the side. She took out the disinfectant, cotton swabs, and ointment.

She removed Shane’s robe, revealing his broad, well-defined back.

If a "killer back view" applied to men, Shane’s would be second to none.

Unfortunately, the current state of his back was horrifying.

The wound was from a sulfuric acid burn, already pitted and uneven. Now that it had scabbed over, it looked even more狰狞 and terrifying.

This was definitely not the most horrific wound Eliza had ever treated, but it was the one that made her heart ache the most. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

With the gentlest of motions, Eliza treated Shane’s wound, wrapped it with a bandage, and then helped him put his robe back on.

"Let me help you to bed."

Shane did not refuse.

He rested his arm on Eliza’s shoulder, his cold eyes fixed on her.

He had to admit, Eliza Sutton was very beautiful.

Her beauty wasn’t the frail, helpless, damsel-in-distress type. It was brilliant and poised, like a peony in full bloom, captivating you from the very first glance.

Sensing Shane’s gaze, Eliza turned to look at him.

Their eyes met, and it felt as if something was sparking in their shared gaze.

Eliza’s heart couldn’t help but speed up.

THUMP, THUMP, THUMP—

The sound of her own heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Suddenly, Shane spoke.

"Who is that man?"

"What?"

"The man whose child you bore."

Eliza glanced at Shane, not surprised by his question.

When she had confronted Amelia Sutton at the mall, she had vaguely noticed Shane arriving.

Moreover, Shane had surely investigated her. Although her giving birth in prison was a closely guarded affair, it wasn’t a state secret. With Shane’s resources, finding out wouldn’t have been difficult.

"I don’t know."

Shane frowned. "You don’t know? Eliza Sutton, are you trying to protect that man?"

His tone was already laced with displeasure.

’Protect him?’

Eliza found the term bizarre. ’It’s not like I’m out of my mind. Why would I protect the man who ruined me?’

"No."

Shane waited for Eliza to continue, but she had no intention of saying more.

An indescribable annoyance rose in Shane’s heart. He didn’t know why he was angry, just that he was, and he commanded, "Cut ties with that man. Remember that you are Mrs. Lockwood!"

Eliza couldn’t help but ask, "What if I find my child? Would you be able to accept him?"

Shane’s brow furrowed. "Eliza Sutton, do you know what you’re saying?"

"I know... never mind."

Eliza stopped herself just as she began.

Men are naturally possessive creatures; it’s almost impossible for them to fully accept a child that isn’t their own.

And she would never let Theo, her only reason for living in this world, endure a life of depending on others’ charity. The only reason she had managed to claw her way through that sunless prison and make something of herself was so she could live a respectable life after getting her child back.

Besides, she and Shane were an impossibility.

"Shane Lockwood, I’ve been married into this family for forty days."

"And?"

"According to our agreement, the fifty-day mark to file for divorce is approaching."

Shane’s brow furrowed slightly. "What are you trying to say?"

"I’m saying, since we’re going to separate sooner or later, why not now? I’m very grateful for Mr. Lockwood’s care during this time."

Shane’s brows knitted into a tight knot, his eyes filled with shock and disbelief. "You want to divorce me?"

"It’s not that I want a divorce, but that I’m proposing we fulfill our agreement ahead of schedule. The very first night you woke up, you wanted to divorce me and warned me not to have any wishful fantasies, didn’t you?"

Eliza glanced at Shane and saw his dark expression, feeling a little baffled.

’Isn’t he the one who wanted a divorce, who kept warning me not to get any ideas? Why does he look so unhappy?’

Suddenly, Eliza recalled a classic line from those overbearing CEO stories: "You don’t get to decide when the game is over."

Eliza felt she understood.

’I broke the rules.’

She quickly added, "That was thoughtless of me. Just pretend I never said that. Forget about it."

Shane’s expression relaxed slightly. He was just about to speak when he heard Eliza say,

"Now it’s your turn to ask for the divorce. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely agree."
