After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 89: Can’t Get Divorced for Now
Shane Lockwood tilted his head, and the teacup grazed his cheek as it flew past, leaving a red, swollen mark.
Shane Lockwood’s face darkened, his expression turning cold. "Mom, who exactly has been feeding you this nonsense? Was it Eliza Sutton?"
His voice was ice-cold.
’So that was it.’ He had wondered why Eliza Sutton, after insisting she wouldn’t divorce him, had suddenly proposed it herself and agreed without a single condition.
’And here he’d actually believed she was willing to leave quietly on her own. He never expected her to pull a stunt like this.’
"What does this have to do with Eliza? Emmett saw it when he was in your office! If it weren’t for my clever grandson, I wouldn’t have known a thing until my daughter-in-law had already disappeared."
Mrs. Lockwood burst into tears. "My poor daughter-in-law! When you were in a coma and everyone was waiting for you to die, she married into this family to save your life! Now that you’re awake, you’re going to abandon your wife and child? You might as well throw your own mother out, too! Then you can do whatever you please and finally get some peace and quiet!"
"Kick me out too! I want to be with Mom and Grandma!" Emmett Lockwood ran out, clinging to Mrs. Lockwood and wailing at the top of his lungs. He was so loud it felt like he could bring the roof down.
Shane Lockwood had had enough. "Emmett Lockwood, shut your mouth!"
"Who are you telling to shut their mouth?!" Mrs. Lockwood slapped her son on the arm. "You’ve gotten bold, haven’t you? Is your own mother nothing to you now?"
"Mom, I was just disciplining Emmett."
"What right do you have to discipline Emmett? What gives you the right? If it weren’t for my clever grandson, you would have thrown your own life away! You’re driving me and your son to our graves!"
"Mom, that’s not what I meant. I don’t have feelings for Eliza Sutton. You know I want to marry Vivian Forrest—she’s Emmett’s biological mother. Emmett is growing up, and it would be best for him to be cared for by his birth mother."
"I don’t want a biological mother! No—my mom IS my biological mother! I just crawled out of that Forrest woman’s belly! I just borrowed her womb to come into this world!"
"Emmett Lockwood!" Shane Lockwood’s voice was laced with a warning. "When did I ever teach you to be so disrespectful? How can you talk about your mother like that!"
Emmett Lockwood flinched, but before he could speak, Mrs. Lockwood couldn’t hold back any longer. She shot to her feet, slamming her hand on the table.
"What are you shouting for? Do you still have any respect for me, your own mother? What part of what Emmett said was wrong? Yes, Vivian Forrest gave birth to him, but what has she done besides that? When she was in the country, all she did all day was use Emmett to pressure you into marriage and spend your money! And later, when news came that you were critically ill, where was she? Don’t even try to tell me she didn’t know!
"Back then, the second branch of the family was trying to undermine you—they made sure every rat in the gutter knew you were on your deathbed!"
Shane Lockwood furrowed his brow, saying nothing.
Tears streamed down Mrs. Lockwood’s face as she sobbed, "Shane Lockwood, do you have any idea? Before Eliza married into our family, Emmett and I were pushed to the brink. It wasn’t so bad for me—a woman without a husband, whose son was about to die. No one paid me any mind. But Emmett was different.
"As the eldest grandson and direct heir of the Lockwood family, he was a thorn in everyone’s side. In just two short months, he faced I don’t know how many brushes with death. If he hadn’t been so lucky, if Eliza hadn’t finally arrived and you hadn’t woken up... the moment you took your last breath would have been the moment he and I followed you."
This wasn’t the first time Shane Lockwood had heard about these events. He had investigated what happened during his coma after he woke up, but reading the cold, hard facts was completely different from hearing his mother’s tearful, firsthand account.
Shane Lockwood was overcome with guilt. "Mom, I’m sorry. I failed to protect you and Emmett."
Mrs. Lockwood shook her head. "I don’t blame you. They were determined to scheme against you; it was unavoidable. But Eliza is your lucky star. She’s your lifesaver, Shane. You can’t divorce her. I’m begging you. For my sake, and for Emmett’s... please?"
Looking at his mother’s tear-filled eyes, Shane Lockwood couldn’t bring himself to refuse her outright. "I’ll give it serious thought."
"Good. You think it over, and try to get along with Eliza. One day you’ll realize how wonderful she is, and you won’t be able to bear the thought of her leaving."
Shane Lockwood gave a slight smile but didn’t take her words to heart.
Of course, at that moment, Shane Lockwood had no idea how quickly he would be forced to eat his words.
Eliza Sutton returned to Seacliff Manor immediately after work. She only had one week left with Emmett Lockwood, and she cherished the time.
However, the last person she expected to see there was Shane Lockwood.
"What are you doing here?"
Shane Lockwood glanced over at her coolly. "And why shouldn’t I be?"
Eliza Sutton quickly waved her hands. "No, no, that’s not what I meant."
"Sit down and eat."
Eliza Sutton sat down to Shane Lockwood’s left. Seeing this, Housekeeper Zimmerman immediately had the kitchen serve dinner.
Eliza Sutton looked at the empty seat at the other end of the table, confused. "Where’s Emmett?"
"Can’t you eat just because Emmett Lockwood isn’t here?"
"No..." Eliza Sutton quickly picked up her chopsticks and put a piece of food in her mouth.
She couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Shane Lockwood, only to be caught red-handed.
Shane Lockwood said, "What are you looking at? Is something written on my face? Or are you trying to communicate with me telepathically?"
"..." Eliza Sutton obediently averted her gaze and went back to eating in silence.
At the same time, she couldn’t help but grumble inwardly, ’What’s gotten into Shane Lockwood? He’s acting like he’s swallowed a lit firecracker.’
DING—
Eliza Sutton’s phone chimed.
Eliza Sutton picked it up to see a message from Emmett Lockwood.
Emmett Lockwood: You can do it, Mom!
’You can do it?’
Eliza Sutton was puzzled. Just as she was about to reply to Emmett, Shane Lockwood’s cold voice cut in.
"On your phone during dinner? Where are your manners?"
Eliza Sutton put her phone down by reflex. The oppressive feeling in that instant made her feel like a student being reprimanded by a strict teacher.
Shane Lockwood gave a small huff and continued eating.
After dinner, Shane Lockwood went to his upstairs study to lead a meeting.
Eliza Sutton was just about to call for Mrs. Zimmerman to ask about the situation when she noticed some papers in the trash can.
Eliza Sutton took the papers out and pieced them together. At the top were the words "Divorce Agreement."
From the contents, she could tell it was the very same one she had signed.
Eliza Sutton’s brow furrowed.
It was already eleven o’clock at night by the time Shane Lockwood finished his work.
When he returned to the bedroom, the lights were still on. Eliza Sutton was sitting on the sofa, the divorce agreement laid out on the coffee table in front of her.
Seeing Shane Lockwood, she asked anxiously, "What is the meaning of this?"
Hearing her question, Shane Lockwood suddenly became certain of one thing: Eliza Sutton genuinely wanted this divorce.
Shane Lockwood wheeled himself into the room and said coolly, "It’s just as it looks. We won’t be getting a divorce for the time being."
