Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Azure Vaughn Wants to See Me

Even if he doesn’t love me, he surely loves his own child.

I watched him in anger, parted my lips, but ultimately didn’t tell him that even without Azure, the child might not have survived.

I can accept that the child couldn’t survive due to other reasons, but I can’t forgive that it was Azure who caused the loss.

"Haven’t you loved me for ten years? Why, when I told you I liked you, did you so decisively choose to divorce? You didn’t even give me a chance to handle other matters. Did I commit murder or arson to deserve this punishment!?" Henry Preston stared at me with bloodshot eyes.

I tried to face Henry’s outburst calmly, "Since you love the child so much, you should hold Azure accountable; she’s the one who caused it."

Henry’s eyes looked different, his voice calmed down, "Half a year more at most. If I confirm it’s her doing, I won’t let her off."

"Half a year? Why half a year?" Is this just to delay again?

Henry closed his eyes, then reopened them to look at me. In his ink-black eyes, the anger had gradually subsided, and he replied, "Azure needs treatment for a while. Depending on the situation, we’ll consider surgery. After the second transplant, we’ll part ways."

I noticed the issue with Azure’s surgery and felt an uncontrollable strange feeling spreading.

"In the end, you still care for her, Henry. If you’ve come just to tell me this reason, then there’s no need. I’m not a fool." I found it laughable. Was it necessary to come to tell me such a reason?

"Can’t you trust me?" Henry’s bloodshot eyes calmed a bit, but they were still filled with irritation.

"Then tell me, why do you have to wait until after her surgery?" I pressed further.

Just as Henry was about to answer, his phone rang. I glanced casually; it was a call from Azure, so he had to answer it first.

Azure said something, and Henry frowned even more, "Alright, I’ll come over right now."

After hanging up, Henry said to me, "She has something at the hospital, I need to go there. I’ll talk to you next time."

"It’s just a matter of a few words, you can tell me now." I refused to relent. I wanted to know the real reason behind Henry’s indulgence toward Azure. I didn’t believe it was just because he liked her.

Otherwise, there was no need for him to come and discuss these matters with me.

But Henry just looked at me, his gaze filled with emotions I couldn’t understand. Finally, he repeated, "I’ll explain to you next time, okay?"

Maybe Azure said something earlier, causing him to change his mind temporarily. My mood was already terrible. Although I had some dirt on Azure that I could release anytime, I held back because I felt the timing wasn’t right.

I gave Henry a deep look. His face was covered in a layer of frost, clearly not in a good mood. I didn’t say anything further and just got out of the car.

As I watched Henry’s car drive away, the coldness in my heart grew increasingly intense.

Unexpectedly, that night, I received another call from Silas Lockwood. His voice was somewhat anxious but also hesitant, "Zoe Hathaway, can you come over for a bit?"

"What’s wrong?" I asked.

"Brother Henry is in the hospital now, and Azure isn’t doing well. She wants to see you," Silas Lockwood was clearly awkward as he spoke.

It must have been Azure who requested to see me. Henry couldn’t bring himself to tell me, so Silas did instead.

Though he’s already with Crystal Dawson, Silas, like Henry, thinks Azure is an innocent and helpless girl, full of protective affection. If he keeps this up, Crystal will end up killing him.

"What does this have to do with me?" I found it somewhat amusing. If Azure really isn’t going to make it and dies like this, I might feel a bit better, taking it as retribution and as if she were buried with my child.

"I know there are misunderstandings between you, but it’s a matter of life and death. Her situation is really critical; she’s in emergency care. She said if she wakes up, she wants to personally apologize to you. Could you... just see it as doing a good deed?" Silas Lockwood asked cautiously.

A matter of life and death. Wasn’t the child I lost a life too?

Just then, I heard Jason Forrest’s voice from the other side, "Don’t let her come, what if Azure wakes up and gets even more agitated?"

Silas instantly fell silent. They really treated Azure as a helpless and pitiable girl, while I was the terrifying wolf.

"Which hospital? I’ll go." I asked.

"Huh? Maybe it’s best if you don’t come, it’s too much trouble..." Silas sounded anxious and uneasy.

"Then I’ll go ask Crystal." I wasn’t in the mood to waste words with him and decided to bring up the big guns.

As soon as he heard Crystal Dawson’s name, Silas Lockwood panicked, realizing he hadn’t told anyone he went to the hospital to see Azure Vaughn. Within seconds, he quickly gave me the hospital’s address.

If he’s so afraid of me upsetting Azure, then I simply can’t justify not going myself.

After hanging up, I immediately rushed to the hospital. By the time I arrived, Azure had already come out of the emergency room. Although the situation was critical, fortunately, the timely rescue brought her out of danger.

Henry Preston was waiting outside the emergency room. When he saw me, his eyes showed a complex expression, with a hint of coldness.

Azure was pushed out and sent to a ward. Throughout, Henry didn’t say a word to me; he just followed her to the ward. Silas whispered to me, "Brother Henry’s not in a good mood. Maybe you should head back?"

"How could I leave after coming all this way?" I replied simply and followed them.

In the ward, I sat down silently. Jason Forrest noticed my actions and was quite displeased. "Why are you here?" he asked.

"Hm?" I raised an eyebrow. "Didn’t she want to see me? That’s why I came."

"You came just because Silas told you to?" Jason seemed even more concerned about Azure than Silas, to the point I suspected he might have a crush on her.

I sat still as a mountain. "Isn’t it because Azure wanted to see me? Silas was just relaying the message. What, am I not even allowed to follow her wishes?"

Henry watched as Jason and I argued but didn’t say a word, only looking at Azure on the hospital bed, seemingly lost in thought.

The room fell into silence. Sleep eluded me until around eleven at night when Azure woke up. The moment she made a faint sound, Henry immediately went to check on her condition.

"How are you feeling? Any discomfort?" His voice was soft and full of concern.

Remembering the time I lost my child and the only thing Henry and I did in the hospital room was quarrel and hurt each other, it was ironic to see how much more dear to his heart Azure seemed.

"Mm, has Miss Hathaway arrived?" Azure’s voice was weak but clear.

I stood up and walked over, looking coldly at Azure lying on the bed. The frail girl resembled a pure white flower battered by storm and rain, swaying and evoking a protective instinct despite feeling disdain and disgust towards her now.

"Miss Hathaway, I’m sorry. I’ve always wanted to clear the air with you and remain friends. This time, when I was close to death, I realized you were the only person I let down. There’s been too much misunderstanding between us..." Azure’s little face was pale, and she spoke with difficulty, like it was exhausting.

Such a humbly apologetic scene appeared so pitiable and helpless in the two men’s eyes beside her.

Jason hesitated several times, looking at me with unmistakable disapproval.

Fortunately, Silas wasn’t here. He likely went back to Crystal Dawson, or else all three men would feel sorry for Azure, making me appear even more like a malicious woman.

They don’t know Azure wants me dead as well, and she killed my child with her own hands, her dual facades clear to me, while others remain hypnotized by her innocent image, unable to extricate themselves.

"Why don’t you tell me, what misunderstandings?" I managed to ask calmly, demonstrating strong restraint.

"We..." Azure froze, unable to fathom how to articulate it.

"Are you talking about when we had dinner with Sutton, and you got a sales call? Or when I was kidnapped and nearly killed? Oh, or perhaps when you witnessed me losing my child in the hospital?" I intentionally mentioned those incidents but didn’t make it clear, just wanting to see how Azure would panic in front of Henry and the others.

Indeed, Azure’s face turned as pale as paper, looking even worse than before.

Her eyes twitched, not knowing whether she was looking at Henry or me.

Seeing Azure looking so tense and scared, Jason spoke up, "If there’s something, just say it, no need to provoke her on purpose. She’s still a patient."

"What’s the matter with all this?" Henry’s voice was deep and indifferent. "Explain it clearly."

"It’s all my fault!" Azure didn’t wait for me to speak and started explaining anxiously, "Henry, when you called me the first time, I was having dinner with Miss Hathaway and Joel. I feared Joel might misunderstand, so I said it was a sales call. Perhaps Miss Hathaway misunderstood me. Regarding the time she was kidnapped, people said I deliberately didn’t hear her cry for help, but I sincerely didn’t hear anything; it’s just that she didn’t believe me. And your child... I shouldn’t have gone to see Miss Hathaway, which agitated her and caused emotional distress. I never thought it would turn out that way. I would rather have died myself than for anything to happen to your child!"
