After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 150: Driven to Distraction
Just as I arrived at the restaurant entrance, I received a message from Leah Lane: It’s confirmed, Azure Vaughn is returning to University A the day after tomorrow. She’s truly unbreakable, I admire her!
I replied: Okay, got it.
When I entered the private room booked by Eloise Lawson, it was already filled with people sitting around a large table. Even Crystal Dawson, who was visibly pregnant, was there, along with Henry Preston, Silas Lockwood, and Jason Forrest, as well as several other unfamiliar men and women.
"Zoe?!" Crystal Dawson quickly stood up and pulled me out of the room. "Why are you here? I only didn’t invite you because I saw Henry was here!"
"Eloise Lawson invited me," I replied. "Is this her gathering?"
"Not at all! Henry invited her for a meal and she brought some friends. Henry, in turn, invited Silas Lockwood and Jason Forrest, and Silas brought me along." Crystal Dawson seemed puzzled. "Does Eloise Lawson like Henry Preston? I could tell just by looking at her expression, so why did she invite you? Was it intentional?"
While we were talking, the door opened again.
Eloise Lawson emerged, looking at me helplessly. "Zoe, I didn’t want to invite you, but since I said I stayed at your place last night, he said one should repay kindness, and it would be good to invite you for a meal. Is he trying to rekindle old flames?"
Crystal Dawson’s eyes widened, "Stop talking nonsense!"
"You’re Crystal Dawson, right?" Eloise Lawson looked at Crystal, quickly shifting topics, "What’s your lipstick shade? It looks nice, but can pregnant women wear lipstick?"
As soon as Crystal Dawson heard this, she immediately started introducing her lipstick shade.
I felt they were somewhat similar in certain ways, and both had straightforward personalities.
After discussing the lipstick shade, Eloise Lawson returned to the subject of Henry. "I heard Azure Vaughn called him, so she’ll definitely show up later. Isn’t she supposed to be hospitalized? How is she running around with such a serious heart condition?"
"She’s got a strong life force," I answered. "I’m not staying for the meal, you guys enjoy. Just tell my dad I came and ate."
Crystal Dawson nodded, "Yeah, you’re better off not eating this meal."
"Definitely, I don’t want to watch Henry and his ex-wife dine together. Zoe, you should leave. Crystal, let’s go back inside." Eloise Lawson said briskly.
I waved to Crystal Dawson, and she followed Eloise Lawson back into the room.
I took the elevator downstairs, planning to grab something to eat quickly and head home. Just as I reached the restaurant entrance, Azure Vaughn and Fern Tate appeared together.
Azure Vaughn wasn’t in a wheelchair today, and Fern Tate was tightly holding onto her arm.
When she saw me, Azure Vaughn stopped, her pale face full of melancholy.
"Henry Preston is still waiting for us, let’s go," Fern Tate seemed to deliberately say loud enough for me to hear.
I ignored them and passed by them.
"Miss Hathaway!" Azure Vaughn called out to me, breaking free from Fern Tate’s grasp and came over to me, "Can we talk about something?"
"No, what is there to talk between us?" I looked at her coldly, "Maybe discuss the time you pushed me off the hospital bed? Discuss the crime of intentional harm?"
Azure Vaughn’s face turned even whiter, and she stared at me, "Miss Hathaway, I didn’t push you; you fell by yourself!"
The skill of lying with one’s eyes wide open, she truly mastered it.
I pretended to shove her, and Fern Tate quickly rushed over to support her, shouting at me angrily, "Zoe Hathaway, are you crazy?! Just a few days ago, she was surviving a critical condition, and today she’s just barely managing to leave the hospital; what if something happens?"
Azure Vaughn was also scared, her pupils trembling a bit.
I twisted my wrist, "What nonsense, I didn’t push her; she just couldn’t stand properly, and I was only trying to help her."
Azure Vaughn knew I was sarcastically mocking her, and her expression turned very unpleasant.
Fern Tate was about to reprimand me, but Azure Vaughn stopped her, "Yardley, I’m fine. I want to talk to Miss Hathaway alone for a bit."
"Azure, what if she harms you? You need to protect your health right now..." Fern Tate was extremely worried.
She values her sister’s heart just as much as Henry does.
Azure Vaughn shook her head, "I’m fine, Yardley; Miss Hathaway won’t do anything to me."
Fern Tate looked at me warily, and I responded with a provoking smile, "The only thing I’d advise is not to let her stay in my sight any longer."
"Azure Vaughn, there’s no point in talking to her. Your health is more important, let’s go find Henry first." Fern Tate tightly grabbed Azure’s arm.
"Yardly, no need!" Azure Vaughn pulled her hand away, a flash of impatience visible in her eyes.
Really doesn’t recognize a good heart.
Fern Tate had to walk away, while Azure Vaughn kept staring straight at me, "Miss Hathaway, did Henry Preston give you an agreement? Regarding the reallocation of assets?"
I was mildly surprised, given her serious illness, she’s surprisingly persistent about everything. Truly attentive. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
I kept silent, mocking her with a hint of sarcasm in my smile. Her expression turned angry due to my disdain.
She lowered her voice and continued, "I think people shouldn’t be too greedy. You know how vast his wealth is; can you really handle getting a third of it? Doesn’t your conscience hurt?"
"And why can’t I handle it?" I found it rather amusing. "Do you think I’m like you? If someone gave you ten million now, you probably wouldn’t even know how to spend it, and let me tell you something: If you’re investigating, at least get it right. What third? It’s half of his assets, plus 8% of The Preston Group shares."
Upon hearing this, Azure Vaughn’s face turned as sour as if she had swallowed a fly, clearly showing her intel was not comprehensive.
She blurted out, "Impossible! I clearly heard the lawyer talking to him..."
The conversation abruptly stopped, as it was inappropriate to admit overhearing Henry’s conversation with the lawyer.
"Azure Vaughn, what qualifications do you have to bring this up with me? Am I unworthy of Henry’s money, but you are?" I raised my chin slightly, using my height advantage to look down at her, "What are you? Besides being younger than me, what other advantages do you have?"
Previously, I was too polite to her, thinking she was just an innocent, pure girl, forced to bow to Henry’s tactics.
Now I see she’s far more cunning than an ordinary young woman.
"You!" Azure Vaughn showed frustration for the first time in front of me but couldn’t utter a word.
I really wanted to ask her if she thought she deserved it because she resembled Winter Tate or because she had someone else’s heart inside her.
"Just because I’m the one Henry likes!" Azure Vaughn finally found a reason to retort.
"Well, good luck seeing if he’ll marry you," I retorted coldly, "Azure Vaughn, do you truly not know about Winter Tate? How about Fern Tate being her sister? Or are you pretending ignorance to comfortably accept their kindness to you?"
These words packed even more punch than my earlier ones, causing Azure’s pretty eyes to widen in disbelief that I was aware of Winter Tate’s existence.
Amused by her reaction, I continued, "Azure Vaughn, did you really think The Preston Family didn’t try to keep me? Of course, they informed me about Winter Tate, plus your heart.’
"I don’t know what you’re talking about!" Azure panicked, "I don’t have any acquaintance named Winter Tate!"
"Why panic? You should thank your parents for giving you a face like Winter Tate’s, and thank the coincidence of receiving her heart transplant. Otherwise, Henry wouldn’t spare you a glance, nor would Fern treat you like a sister, got it?" I showed no regard for Azure’s already pale complexion.
Isn’t she just playing dumb? To boldly claim Henry’s compensation as love for her.
Azure suddenly clutched her chest, breathing quickly, and staggered a few steps as if she wasn’t steady.
I stepped back a bit, while Fern swiftly came over to support Azure again.
"Zoe Hathaway, what did you do to her?!" Fern angrily demanded.
Then, Henry Preston appeared from inside the restaurant entrance. When he saw Azure in distress, he quickly rushed over, reaching her side in just a few steps.
Azure collapsed into his arms, lips trembling, "Henry, Winter, Winter Tate, who is she..."
After speaking, she fainted.
Even while fainting, she laid groundwork for the next step. Since I revealed her knowledge about Winter Tate, Henry would soon find out. Rather than hide it, she might as well openly ask, placing herself in a vulnerable position.
How pitiful, she didn’t even realize she was merely a stand-in.
I looked on coldly as Henry Preston shot me a deep glance, his brow furrowed. Then he picked Azure up and headed to the car, ready to go to the hospital.
"Henry, aren’t you going to teach Zoe Hathaway a lesson? She did something excessive to Azure, causing her to faint!" Fern Tate angrily spoke.
"Let’s get Azure to the hospital first," Henry replied impatiently before getting into the car.
