Back in Alterra, the monster mob was cleared out very quickly.

Why? Because everyone had been stiffened in their home for weeks and needed exercise! As soon as the monsters arrived, about five to six hours after the floods, people immediately jumped to action.

Pretty much everyone who wasn’t a kid and an old person had gone to the battlement. Many of them even jumped down to go against monsters directly!

Fortunately, all the guards were deployed to fight against beasts, so the civilians were near a team of guards at all times.

Like others, they were also excited! Although they went out everyday to clear snow, that was boring, not to mention uncomfortable due to the weather.

They also had hundreds of level 20 and several level 30 monsters. These, the soldiers and the other strongmen hunted them directly. First of all, it was not that easy for them to find monsters that could give them quantitative experience!

They definitely went all out this time. They lured the big monsters away from the wall and back to the mob, directly crushing the weaker ones.

They naturally had proper defense strategies and plans, making sure that each member could also gain experience.

For example, when a big monster appeared, if the assigned fighters were strong, then they would always direct it back to the monster mob. This was to create collateral damage among the enemies.

Even if they didn’t die, the smaller monsters could at least be weakened enough so that by the time they reached the walls, they were easy targets!

Other than them, those fighting on the ground were also brave. They coordinated well with the sentries and the archers, killing monsters with minimal effort regardless of whether they were around their levels or not.

They believed that they’d be fine, their teammates were trustworthy. And if they got injured, they had the best medical treatment they could get right behind them!

The half-orcs also handled an area, though their scope was more to take down the intermittent level 20 monsters here and there, lightening up the load for others while ensuring that they were also gaining EXP in their kills.

Soon, the first wave was cleared. Fortunately, the next waves of monsters were smaller.

The appearance of mobs was continuous, some of the next ones increasingly sparser and people eventually started to rest and leave the rest to others and the guards, just going back to fight whenever they felt like it.

The shops opened again during this time, servicing the people desperate for a variety that was not jerky, crackers, and instant noodles.

The shops also took advantage of the high traffic on the battlement to make money again. Most people had been stagnant the past few weeks, whether it was in strength or in money. It was no surprise they were so excited for a fight (or for a sale).

This was something newcomers and guests would find a bit difficult to get used to.

Even experienced towns would take a day to clear these mobs right? Not to mention Alterra’s mobs seemed even stronger than its peers.

Interestingly, at some point, many of the guests joined in, too.

Well, some like Bart and Sipa had long teamed up with the soldiers to handle the small mobs of level 30s in the east gate!

They knew Alterrans had unique sets of fighting skills and they would learn something, so they naturally wouldn’t miss the opportunity.

More and more people joined in and fought, regardless of whether they were mercenaries or visitors.

They wanted to experience this: the joy of fighting and the high of growth.

They wanted that feeling of heading home after a long day of work and battles, walking on the streets and buying street food to relax and reward oneself!

...The more they thought about it, the nicer it felt. What to do? They were really reluctant to leave!!

...

Meanwhile, while the territory was bustling with activity again (everyone estimated that it’d be bursting for the next few days, nonstop), Althea went to the uppermost floor of the Center again.

She was finally going to start hiring again. She avoided doing so during the Cold because it’d be too difficult for the new hire to adjust, and it was troublesome to orient them. (a.k.a. Being lazy).

More importantly, their jobs would be limited and it would be a waste of a salary to hire in the middle of a disaster!

A few gold a day was not much to Althea, let alone gold a month. However, she will never accept unnecessary waste of money.

Now, they have to start hiring maximum again every day.

The range of hires was the same every rank regardless of tier. That was to say, if the village was level one or three, they would share the same hiring pool.

A town was no different. This meant that the range would remain the same for her with level averaging around 15 to 20, up to around level 25 if she got lucky.

For people stronger than that, they usually didn’t need the Chancery to protect themselves anymore. At that level, they would refuse to give any more commissions to a third party so they preferred to get hired directly or focus on mercenary work.

This was fine. Alterra made up for that with resident mercenaries. They could also use the injection of forces around level 20 to increase the town’s average.

As for those lower than that, they would continue to be sent elsewhere like satellites and allies who could use a lot of people at the peak of the village level to protect themselves.

The surplus would simply be hired by associate territories for higher costs, so hiring to the maximum allowed every day was never a loss.

In fact, the allies had never stopped sending requests for Town-level manpower, and it even turned to a closed bidding sessions where people would send letters giving her more commission than others, so their village was prioritized.

The road to growth, strengthening, and improvement was never ending, indeed. And so was Alterra’s wallet.
