Chapter 461 - 413: Zaboru – “Who Are You?”
Zanichi smiled. "Do you want to hear a story?"
Zaboru looked puzzled. "A story? About your past? Sure—I'd love to hear it."
Zanichi chuckled. "Alright then, sit tight, son. Do you have time? Because this could be a long one, and I think it's the right moment for you to learn the truth about my past."
Zaboru leaned in, intrigued. In his previous life, his dad had an ordinary background—raised in a typical family, skilled in technology, worked at Sony, then retired. But something felt different in this world. What's the twist? he wondered.
Zanichi began. "Have you ever heard of the Zagashira Company?"
Zaboru raised an eyebrow. "I think I've heard of them, but they're not exactly in the public eye, right?" Zaboru had heard the name a few times in this new world, but he still didn't fully understand what the Zagashira Company was or why it seemed so significant.
Zanichi nodded. "Exactly. Even now, they maintain a low profile. But behind the scenes, they hold significant sway in Japan's automotive industry—Honda, Suzuki, Toyota... they all listen when Zagashira speaks. Anyway, my birth name isn't Zanichi Renkonan. It's Zanichi Zagashira."
Zaboru's eyes widened. "What? So Renkonan isn't your real name?" The revelation hit Zaboru like a bomb—because in his previous life, Renkonan had been his father's actual family name!
Zanichi shook his head. "Renkonan is your mother Keiko's family name. I adopted it because it holds real meaning for me. You see, the Zagashira family always expected me to inherit the business and follow my father's grand vision. But I didn't care about that life. Sure, I had a knack for electronics and engineering, I seemed to have a natural eye for hardware defects and could pick up new electronics skills quickly. But my true passion? Manga and art."
Zaboru blinked, stunned. This was completely new. His father's backstory was far more dramatic than he imagined —and could even detect hardware defects? Zaboru wondered, 'Is this similar to my reincarnation abilities, or is it something entirely different?'
Zanichi continued, "Through high school, I chased my dream. I even created a small manga studio. I worked hard took on part-time jobs, saved every yen I could to create it. When I was finally ready to publish my work under the pen name 'Benkei.' The manga was called Eclipse. But then my father no, my former father Zenzou Zagashira found out. He forced me to stop. We argued, and at my siblings' suggestions, the family exiled me. well then after that I became homeless." Zanichi shook his head. "They never cared about my well-being back then. They had plenty of money, but not once did they offer me help—or even try to persuade me to come back."
Zaboru gasped. "You were homeless?"
Zanichi nodded. "Yes. And during that time, I met your mother—Keiko. She was an angel. The Renkonan family ran an izakaya and were known for feeding the homeless. That's how I survived. When I was scavenging for food, they noticed me and offered me a meal. It was the most amazing food I had eaten in my entire life—I hadn't had a proper meal in days. This kindness continued for a couple of days until One day, their radio broke, and I fixed it. Your grandmother, Sakura Renkonan, was so impressed that she offered me a job as the store cleaner, along with a room to live in and they also asked me to fix their broken electronics which i glady fix so I said yes to the offfer."
His voice softened. "Not long after, your grandfather Rui Renkonan took notice. He visited the Izakayas and He gave me a set of blueprints from his electronics firm and jokingly asked for suggestions. I studied them carefully and returned with substantial improvements. He was impressed—turns out he was a senior executive at a small but ambitious electronics firm. He hired me on the spot.
Zanichi smiled fondly. "From there, things began to change. I worked tirelessly, driven by the desire to become a man your mother could rely on, until I got the opportunity to work at Sonaya I gave up on drawing, put my energy into tech, and the Renkonans embraced me like one of their own. For the first time, I felt the warmth of a real family. I eventually proposed to your mother and took the Renkonan name—because that name gave me a true sense of belonging." Zanichi smiled. "Meeting your mother is the best thing that ever happened to me. That's why I can never be mad at her. When I see her face, I remember how beautiful and angelic she is. I'd die for her anytime." Zanichi smiled.
Zaboru's eyes were wide. His mouth hung slightly open. "That's incredible... I had no idea, Dad. I'm so proud to be your son." Zaboru was genuinely impressed by his father's story—it was massively different from the man he had known in his previous life.
He smiled, then added, "By the way, did you know ZAGE owns Hakushensha now? I'm working on a new project—weekly and monthly manga releases through them. If you ever want to publish Eclipse again, or start something new, just say the word."
Zanichi blinked in disbelief. "You're doing something like that? That's amazing. I might give it a try someday... but right now, ZAGE comes first."
Zaboru chuckled. "You can always work on manga as a side project. Actually, I've been thinking of developing a tool that would make creating manga easier—maybe that can be your first test case. We'll call it a ZAGE side project."
Zanichi shook his head, smiling. "Do what you want, son."
He looked down at his hands, imagining the pen strokes again. Maybe—just maybe—he'd draw once more. But for now, his heart belonged to ZAGE.
