Chapter 58: If He Is Worthy

"A great sacrifice," Constantine said suddenly.

"I feel the same way. Which of us would do such a thing? Maybe we could plan to do it now, but who of us would have made that choice earlier, at the beginning of our journey to gain more and more power?" Cordelia muttered and then turned to Cassandra and said:

"That’s why I want you to watch both your nieces and Atlas, at least try to protect them, and I don’t mean if their lives are in danger, I mean when you think they’re going to die."

When Cassandra heard these words, she looked intently into Cordelia’s eyes and said, "Am I allowed to test him? To see if he is worthy?"

"After all I’ve told you, how could you possibly conclude that he’s not worthy?" Cordelia asked in astonishment.

"My lady...Humans are unreliable creatures. There are very few among them who can be trusted, who do not want to use others, who do not want to be take advantage of everything they see, who can live their lives properly. That includes you and Talon. It’s not as easy for one human to understand others as it should be. You’ve been through this recently, remember?" Cassandra replied.

Cordelia nodded her head in understanding, then looked at Cassandra and said, "Very well, do your magic, dear."

Then she said, "I have different tasks for the rest of you, it is time for the Sages who have always stayed where they are to become active. Cassandra, you may go."

With those words, Cassandra left the room and instantly cast a spell on herself. After only fifteen seconds, Cassandra appeared as a completely different person, a young girl, perhaps sixteen or seventeen years old.

She put on the robes of the academy and walked with light steps through the corridors.

After a short time, she learnt from some of the students where Atlas was and arrived at the training grounds.

The first thing she saw was River standing at the entrance to the training grounds, watching Atlas with loving eyes. Even Cassandra couldn’t help but shudder.

Still, the beautiful woman had other things to worry about. "Get out of my sight, princess," she said calmly, approaching River.

As River tried to understand what was going on, she looked into Cassandra’s eyes and realised who she was.

The fact that Cassandra and Juliet got along very well and Juliet was a family friend of River, even if not directly, of course, told River very clearly who the person was.

"Auntie?" River questioned.

"Get lost if you understand, I have some things to discuss with your beloved love."

River frowned unexpectedly and then said, "Not my love!" and left in a huff.

Cassandra rolled her eyes to the right and then, entering the training grounds, which didn’t contain anyone other than Atlas, began to make her way towards the young man.

Atlas was drenched in sweat. It had been almost an hour since he had started training, and he had been swinging his sword non-stop and practising the techniques Perseus had taught him in some strange way.

"You’re Atlas, aren’t you?" Cassandra suddenly questioned.

"And you?" asked Atlas, turning towards the voice coming from behind him as he stopped and breathed in and out rapidly. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

"My name is Cassandra, and as you can see, I’m a third-year student. I have some questions for you," Cassandra replied.

Atlas couldn’t help but think, ’Again?’ and then said, "If you want to serve me for what I’ve done, I beg you, you will be the fifth person to do so today. First the vampire sisters, then directly a princess and now you. Please, stop."

Cassandra was shocked, to put it bluntly, the fact that Atlas hadn’t realised who the woman in front of him was showed even to Cassandra that he wasn’t really omniscient. After all, Atlas was young and, in their eyes, uninformed.

"That wasn’t my goal. I was just going to ask why you did it," Cassandra said suddenly.

Atlas narrowed his eyes and then asked, "Excuse me?"

"I heard what you did, you caused a massacre in the Empire. It was for a good reason, but that’s not what I’m really curious about. The person who was called Kris. You could have waited for Professor Abraham to arrive on the scene and defended yourself, but why did you choose to attack? Why were those three vampire girls so important to you?"

Atlas waited for a few seconds when he heard this question. He tried to steady his breathing and wiped the sweat from his face.

"Importance?" Atlas suddenly questioned. The word seemed to confuse Cassandra.

"Lady. The world is big. Monsters like sages and aura masters surround everyone, even my own master, and my sister is one of them. I grew up hearing about what my sister did, the heroic journeys she had. I grew up in Ilanos, a high-security city in an empire ruled by my aunt and uncle. I don’t know why my sister didn’t choose to become a noble. After all, I could have had a perfect life in the capital city."

At these words, Cassandra squinted her eyes and felt strangely sad. It was as if Atlas’s few words had begun to put the enormous burden on Cassandra.

"Still, that’s the way my life has turned out. Being a hero is not my goal. And it still isn’t. The whole world can burn to dust if you ask me." Atlas said, not even realising the big lie he was telling himself.

"Despite all that, I do have goals. Like the destruction of devil and angel worshippers," he added.

"So the word [importance] doesn’t mean anything in my eyes. I thought something was wrong and I saved the triplet sisters, my body did it by itself, after all, to tell the truth, I realise that the world is not all rosy like it is in Epsilon Empire and as you can see even in an empire like this we have this kind of problems."

"Did they matter to me? You ask..." asked Atlas, not only to Cassandra but also to himself.
