Chapter 40: Chapter 36 Alliance

In the center of the square, the key members of several teams gathered together, gearing up for nightfall; many armed survivors spontaneously patrolled and kept watch around the defensive line.

The people who had just alighted from the military Jeep were local survivors from North Bay Town. The middle-aged man leading them, called Tang Hai, was the original stationmaster of North Bay Station. According to him, after the apocalypse began, he led the stranded passengers from the station and a portion of the town’s residents to hide in a nearby military outpost’s bomb shelter, and they had held out for a considerable amount of time.

Moreover, the dense fog in North Bay Town did not appear at the onset of the apocalypse but manifested after the first period of "polar night." Initially, a group of them planned to flee east, but due to the mist, those who ran out either died or were injured. Gradually, everyone realized they were all trapped in this haunted place. Despite the sun rising as usual, it still felt as though they were living in perpetual night.

"So you’re saying this fog has been around for over ten days?" A chubby man, who was the leader of a small team, asked. His team originally had over thirty people, but in just two short days, they had already lost half.

"That’s right."

"Then you’ve braved the dangers from the bomb shelter to find us, what’s the purpose?" Qian Yu looked at Tang Hai with a scrutinizing gaze, directly cutting to the chase.

"What other purpose could there be but to save you!"

Tang Hai hadn’t even spoken when a somewhat ruffian-looking youth beside him loudly interjected, "There’s a small road still open to the south of the city; I’ve already scouted it. It’s fairly passable. With big trucks and armored vehicles leading, we could definitely break through."

As soon as these words were spoken, the scene fell silent, and the leaders of the other teams looked at him with odd glances, some even scoffing.

Qian Yu let out a cold snort, his expression turning unfriendly as he looked at him.

"Do you take us for fools? If there’s a way out, why wouldn’t you just break out yourselves instead of coming all this way to rescue us?"

His words echoed the sentiments of everyone present.

In the present apocalyptic world, everyone was thinking of self-preservation, with each team suspicious of the others. Such words, even a little girl like Lou Shasha wouldn’t believe.

"Yuming, let me handle this." Tang Hai raised his hand to signal everyone to calm down, then explained, "Honestly, everyone wants to escape, so our purpose is actually the same. We want everyone to band together. More people mean more guns, more vehicles, and a higher chance of surviving."

With this explanation, the others understood Tang Hai’s intentions. Huddling together for warmth in times of crisis was nothing unusual.

Although these teams might backstab each other, fighting to the death over resources, in the current situation, even the foolish knew that their chances of survival were greater if they banded together.

Of course, in everyone’s mind was the thought: let the comrades die before the monks. The more cannon fodder there was, the greater their own chance of survival.

It was an unspoken truth, just shy of being stated outright.

Tang Hai swept his gaze around seriously and said, "We are familiar with the routes and have plenty of equipment. A joint effort should offer us a bigger chance. Besides, you have Superpower Users among you."

When Superpower Users were mentioned, everyone suddenly became alert, looking at me, looking at you, then all eyes turned towards a corner of the square.

"Those siblings and those two other people seem quite extraordinary," someone remarked.

"What’s the background of that woman? She’s so powerful?"

Qian Yu stood up and eyed the direction of Lin Xian, "Almost forgot about this." With that, he walked straight over.

The other team leaders hurriedly followed.

"Yuming, what kind of Superpower does that woman have? She’s quite formidable," Tang Hai asked, following behind with his nephew, Feng Yuming.

"Uncle, seems like some kind of Telekinesis, it’s pretty badass," Feng Yuming replied frowning.

Hearing this, Tang Hai’s eyes flickered with joy, "With such ability, we’ve got a pretty good chance at making it out!"

Feng Yuming glanced at him and said, "Uncle, it’s also a big threat to us."

At those words, Tang Hai’s expression immediately grew somber.

...

Elsewhere, Lin Xian watched from a distance as Qian Yu and the others approached, guessing their intent.

"Your strike earlier must have drained a lot of your strength, right?"

KIKI quickly gestured to Lin Xian to shush, "Quiet down, dummy!"

Lin Xian’s gaze flickered as he saw the slightly weary look on KIKI’s face, knowing she was running low on energy. Fortunately, she hadn’t had a nosebleed today, which slightly relieved him.

Qian Yu and his group approached majestically. The little girl, Lou Shasha, who had been eating canned food, immediately saw the commotion, jumped down from the passenger seat, and stood in front of them, "Hey, what do you want to do?"

Lou Hua quickly got up and stood beside Lou Shasha.

Qian Yu’s gaze passed over them, his tone not as sharp as before, "Don’t be nervous; we’re not here to cause trouble."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah!" Another team leader quickly agreed, "We hope you can join us. Let’s work together."

"You’re so powerful; we definitely have a chance to break through."

At this moment, the team leaders all looked at Lin Xian and KIKI eagerly; clearly, the Superpowers they had just displayed were like saviors, giving them hope for a way out.

"Cooperation?" Lin Xian stood up and asked indifferently, "What kind of cooperation?"

At this moment, Tang Hai and Feng Yuming also walked over. When Lin Xian saw these people, his gaze subtly changed.

How should one put it, all the other survivors in the camp were dirty-faced, with both spirit and complexion looking extremely poor due to constant stress.

Yet these two men looked robust and in good spirits. Had it not been for the recent battle, they might still be very clean.

This made Lin Xian somewhat suspicious.

"My surname is Tang, Tang Hai. I’m a local from North Bay and was the station master of North Bay Station. Now, our group of survivors are all hiding in the military bunker under that mountain..."

Tang Hai introduced himself, and Lin Xian’s brow immediately furrowed upon hearing this.

"Lin Xian, KIKI," Lin Xian responded calmly.

The roguish Feng Yuming beside Tang Hai scrutinized the two of them closely. When he saw KIKI, his eyes suddenly lit up with an unmistakable excitement.

Tang Hai repeated the plan they had been discussing earlier. It was not complicated; they simply wanted Lin Xian and KIKI to agree to move together and take joint action.

"But now it’s getting dark. Isn’t it more dangerous for us to break out at this time?" Lin Xian glanced at Feng Yuming and then back at Tang Hai, voicing his concerns.

Qian Yu, who was beside them, said nonchalantly, "I think whether it’s night or not doesn’t matter anymore. The dangers within this fog are far worse than the darkness."

"That’s not what I mean..." Lin Xian wanted to say more but was interrupted by KIKI who stood out.

"You guys are so dumb! If we rush out in the daytime, we can at least catch our breath outside. Do you want to run away for twenty hours in the dark at night?" KIKI’s words made Qian Yu frown as well.

Her point did indeed make a lot of sense.

"Then shall we set off early tomorrow morning?" someone suggested.

"I have a proposal." Tang Hai stepped forward. "On our way here, we’ve already cleared quite a few Monster Corpses. How about we take this opportunity to move to the air-raid bunker? Firstly, it’ll be relatively safe to rest there; secondly, it’s closer to the small road leading to the south of the city."

Hearing this, everyone thought the suggestion was feasible.

Upon hearing Tang Hai’s mention of the air-raid bunker and exchanging a glance with KIKI, Lin Xian quietly pondered. Wasn’t that the military outpost KIKI had mentioned before?

KIKI gave him a look, and without saying a word, an understanding was reached between the two.

"I think this is a good idea," Lin Xian said, nodding.

Seeing Lin Xian agree, everyone immediately perked up. Qian Yu silently gave Tang Hai a look, didn’t say much, and then ordered Eagle, "Gather everyone, get ready to move!"

Suddenly, the survivor camp buzzed with activity. The survivors from the convoy sorted out their gear and were soon ready to depart, starting up the engines.

...

On a modified heavy-duty off-road vehicle, Eagle observed the military jeeps ahead and said coldly,

"Boss, there’s definitely something off about this Tang guy."

"I noticed it a while ago." Qian Yu sneered, then he took up the walkie-talkie and instructed his team, "Everyone, conserve your ammo, and for God’s sake, turn your safeties off."

After speaking, he put down the walkie-talkie and glanced at Eagle with a detached look.

"That military outpost was my original target for scavenging. If something goes wrong later on, take him down first," referring to Tang Hai.

A glint of ferocity flashed in Eagle’s eyes as he responded with a deep voice, "Don’t worry, Boss."

...

Vroom~!

The convoy started moving. Tang Hai’s military jeeps were at the front, followed by Qian Yu’s Black Serpent Team’s dozen or so heavy modified vehicles. The remainder of the convoy, comprised of dozens of assorted vehicles, trailed behind. Lou Ye’s pickup truck was at the very end, with Lin Xian and KIKI following last.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Sha Sha opened the rear window panel, "Are you guys cold?"

"We’re okay," Lin Xian replied.

"Brother Lin, be careful they might try to trick you," Lou Shasha, though young, was quite astute.

"Uh..."

Lin Xian’s gaze steadied, initially wanting to say that everyone was in the same boat, but then looking at Lou Shasha, he calmly chose different words, "If things really go south, everyone will scatter."

Sha Sha hung onto the window, staring at Lin Xian, "Then... then we must stick together. I just saved you guys."

Lin Xian nodded and said to Lou Shasha, "Okay, let’s form an alliance."
